Australia will look to pile on the pain against England on day three of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba, Brisbane. After an impressive century from Travis Head, Australia have a lead of 196 and could even wrap up the Test if things go their way today. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 10:30am AEDT.
If the first day saw England blown away in worryingly quick fashion, day two saw them slowly, persistently ground into the dirt as Australia piled on the runs session after session. To be fair to England, they did fight hard and kept finding ways to stay in the fight but whenever they found a way back in, Australia had a way of knocking them back down.
The big question now is if and when Pat Cummins will make his first declaration as an Australian captain. Does he declare first thing and put England in with two hundred runs to chase down just to reach parity or does he let Head keep on batting and see just how big a lead Australia can achieve?
Yes there are forecasts of more rain across the next three days that could well reduce the game time available, but England would have to bat like an entirely different side if they are to challenge Australia from this point. So perhaps Cummins will let his men bat and force England to spend yet more time in the hot Gabba outfield.
England aren’t just in trouble on the scoreboard. There’s a chance that both Ollie Robinson and Ben Stokes are injured which means Joe Root has real bowling problems ahead of him for the rest of the Test and potentially the series.
The plan for England is two fold on day three – they must mop up the final three wickets quickly, really quickly. Then it’s all about batting for the rest of the day and beyond. They do have the talent to do that and the Gabba wicket is usually a good place to bat on day three, but can this England side really amass 400+ to create a vaguely challenging fourth innings run chase for the home side?

Inglis sadly failed for aus a with bat . Paine coming off a double fail against tassie seconds . There's no doubt Carey was the go to and has been for years . Tricky pitch for inglis needs some cricket but I've got faith he can push through . Still my only big concern is Harris . He nearly lost his wicket first ball moments ago again then nearly ran himself out next ball . He must score a big innings at Adelaide or he's gone

Nor me. I annoy myself with my inability to accept I'm not going to change people. He is a stubborn bugger though. Knows a lot about cricket too. I have to learn he doesn't respond well to criticism. None of us do really though. In a professional environment, I wouldn't pursue as much. Note to self, do better, show more patience

Is Don is Good. (not sure if you were back home here when that add was on tv?) I’ve had my exchanges with him but I’m not perfect either by any yardstick.

Couple more years but it's close, you're right. I look forward to exchanging fan letters with Don Freo when I stop working

Sounds like you must be close to retirement if you were already working overseas in 1983 - I was not even out of primary school at that point.

I've been an itinerant for a very long time. I worked in London in 1983 and have been in and out of home since. This last stretch started in SA in 2006 and switched to London in 2015. I used to work in Finance, for investment banks. Now a consultant in the Fin Tech space, mostly managing programmes/projects for banks

It ain't going to happen of course . They are saying Hazelwood is ok. Which is bizarre if true

Pretty hard for hazlewood to get a concession fielding at cow corner unless he decides to catch a hook shot with his teeth. We'll know the fix is on if he pads up at short leg or bat pad ;)

Sorry mate, just reading back through some of your earlier comments in this thread leaves no doubt you are Australian. How long have you been in England and what do u do there?
Once Upon a Time on the Roar

Never been to the British Isles. Spent two years in Germany 20 or so years ago and saw other surrounding countries for very short stints but never went across the channel. Are you English or Australian?

London, Chiswick. A pretty corner by the river near Kew Bridge

Right now concentrating on winning this test . They need warner and Hazelwood to fake cricket ball concussions to get Richardson and khawaja in this test if they are not fit to play
Once Upon a Time on the Roar

Yeah. I guess they will have to pick Usman surely?

What's worse is Warner's bruised or broken ribs ?

Yes I know that and we did indeed draw . My concern here is the confidence flow of this match . Adelaide is tricky dn and Anderson was very good last time round there . Melbourne aus been abysmal at with same bowling line up against India twice and england last time . they refuse to change quartet at mcg in last four years outside of Pattinson coming in for an injured Hazelwood and him cleaning up over new Zealand where he has an outstanding average . Now he’s retired and they stupidly didn’t pick him last year after adelaide pink ball test . It takes an injury for them to see they need to rotate at mcg it seems as pink ball test and Gabba extremely different pitches . England had the wood on Australia in a draw which was rain effected last mcg encounter . Then Perth is ditched to allow a line and length Hobart venue which only suits England . Not the way CA could frame the ashes to home advantage that’s for sure . Hence I think tomorrow mornings session is critical for Australia as Gabba is where they often get an advantage in a series

Carey I’ve spoken about with bat so I had mentioned him in another post and he’s keeping really well . Smith is our best batsmen still so would take a run of outs for me to get concerned and warner just would have been out if England fielded properly three times but not seeking to replace him with someone . Right now I’ve made it clear only Harris concerns me and that’s fair enough he has a test average of 22 as it stands . As it stands Im hoping the lot of them perform and win this test match as it’s in a precarious place but they can still get there

I like green and obviously his leaving the ball wasn't great but I'm confident once he gets a few overs or more and his eye in he's going to make runs . We all know he's a talent . Also like his last spell last night he was probing root and malan outside off stump well and very nearly got the prized wicket
