Australia will look to pile on the pain against England on day three of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba, Brisbane. After an impressive century from Travis Head, Australia have a lead of 196 and could even wrap up the Test if things go their way today. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 10:30am AEDT.

If the first day saw England blown away in worryingly quick fashion, day two saw them slowly, persistently ground into the dirt as Australia piled on the runs session after session. To be fair to England, they did fight hard and kept finding ways to stay in the fight but whenever they found a way back in, Australia had a way of knocking them back down.

The big question now is if and when Pat Cummins will make his first declaration as an Australian captain. Does he declare first thing and put England in with two hundred runs to chase down just to reach parity or does he let Head keep on batting and see just how big a lead Australia can achieve?

Yes there are forecasts of more rain across the next three days that could well reduce the game time available, but England would have to bat like an entirely different side if they are to challenge Australia from this point. So perhaps Cummins will let his men bat and force England to spend yet more time in the hot Gabba outfield.

England aren’t just in trouble on the scoreboard. There’s a chance that both Ollie Robinson and Ben Stokes are injured which means Joe Root has real bowling problems ahead of him for the rest of the Test and potentially the series.

The plan for England is two fold on day three – they must mop up the final three wickets quickly, really quickly. Then it’s all about batting for the rest of the day and beyond. They do have the talent to do that and the Gabba wicket is usually a good place to bat on day three, but can this England side really amass 400+ to create a vaguely challenging fourth innings run chase for the home side?
