It’s the biggest day on the Australian cricket calendar: the Boxing Day Test. And it’s only bigger this year, with Australia taking on India on the hallowed turf of the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores from 10:30am (AEDT).

After the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar series under lights with the pink ball in Adelaide, the contest moves back into much more traditional ground today: the traditional Boxing Day Test, played, of course, with the red Kookaburra.

That it’s at the MCG is in itself worth celebrating. While the venue has always hosted the showpiece event, there were series concerns about whether the famous stadium would be able to welcome the two sides due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in Victoria. The hard work of everyone in the state to get the virus under control and allow the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne is well worth celebrating today.

There is, however, a crowd cap fo the match: spectator numbers will be limited to 30,000 each day – well short of the 100,000 capacity Cricket Australia would have been banking on at the start of the year, but still much higher than what would have been expected a few months ago.

One person who won’t be at the ground, though, is Indian captain Virat Kohli. After leading India throughout the limited-overs series and the first Test, the skipper has returned home to be with his wife for the birth of their first child. Regular deputy Ajinkya Rahane will captain the tourists in his place.

Kohli’s absence will, however, leave a considerable void on both the leadership and batting fronts, something Australia and their fearsome attack will no doubt be looking to exploit. Will the hosts be able to do it? Tune in as they attempt to do just that in the Boxing Day Test from 10:30am (AEDT).

Correction harris made 79 scg against india 2019 he did double any other australian score problem is that’s his highest test score the form isn’t great. Marsh has better australian pitch test and shield form than harris if you do look at their.numbers . Warner in for burns , the question for me is who should replace head as he needs a spell out of side way he’s playing is same as ashes . Weakness outside off stump and india know it and prey on it . Marsh would be a good option at five or carey they’d have heads runs covered in this vital test . Just coming up with ways to keep paine as captian as surely If he doesn’t outright win this series he must go as captain

Perth was chosen over the Gabba in 2018/19 because in 2015, Perth missed out on a Test altogether (the India 4 Test series) based on CA's political positioning; CA wanted to force the WACA to upgrade or for the WA State Govt to build a new stadium. The WA Govt subsequently spent $1.5B on a new stadium (even though driven by AFL) and Perth was "rewarded" with the India Test in 18/19 and so the Gabba become the "po0r cousin" in Test scheduling. It's simply CA, like the AFL, flexing their political muscle.

Well, the number of Tests per series are agreed a few years out. But 5 Tests for India series would be preferred. Unfortunately 5 Tests series are as rare as hens teeth. Too much competing scheduling for teams to be everywhere else re Test commitments, plus add in ODIs and T20s. I think what often gets missed in the discussion re scheduling Australia's summer, is that the majority of the Test/ODI/T20 (Full Member) teams have about the same window for cricket in-season as Australia does.

Let’s see how smith goes scg …don’t forget no smith no ashes draw which I think if he captained would have been a won series . Not alone on tim comments many on here after mcg are following suit saying tactics and fields wrong . Lucky to get out of adelaide as well . We were well beaten on matches or first innings in 3 of the 4 matches against india in 18/19 and lucky not to be 2 Nil down this time with india two key bowlers down and no kohli , timmy is struggling yet again against top opposition as captain. Take last summers b grade touring teams out of equation and take smith out of ashes draw and it’s looking pretty ordinary for paine which I’ve always maintained .

Harris did make a century at scg against india 2019 it’s one form line to go on perhaps. He certainly should have started in front of burns . I think your not looking at marsh scores in Australia since 2015 though he’s top scored for australia on several critical innings especially when other top five have not done as well notably at mcg and adelaide . Second on shield list average wise . Not many have better test records on home soil last five years that aren’t playing if you discount the fact he didn’t get to play last summers run blitz which was donation runs to many bolstering averages against pakistan and nz . His one slight weakness may be scg but no one did well besides harris there in 2019 and marsh got a half century and century before that . When you look at various innings at adelaide mcg and scg outside of maybe 2019 scg you’ll see how critical his efforts were against england and india on home soil a few times . For the record I wouldn’t pick marsh after these tests or abroad we are just in a pickle right now and my call to play him in front of burns mcg has held up well . We got beat up there and burns failed . Carey for me would have come in and done a job like jadeja or pant very capable against best bowlers on planet in last few years just can’t get an opp. And here we are losing a second test in two years sticking to timmy . Scg 630 for 7 by india 2019 against same bowling line up warrants concerns . Only bonus is Yadav and shami two ringleaders with wickets in various 18/19 tests are out for scg . I’d actually advise a pace wicket with no spin on that basis . Starc also got nailed by india scg two years ago and lyon got wickets but his average is poor at scg over 33 , think starc is 37 with ball there . Are you sure no changes ?

Their are no options re batting. Hopefully Warner will be fit (although that is not certain). And if he cannot play there is only Harris left to replace Burns. And please don't mention S. Marsh again. After his last test century 3 years ago, he has had 24 test innings for 344 runs @ an average of 14.33. I reckon I would back you to do better. Also he 37 plus years old. You go crook that Paine has just turned 36 and think he is too old. Puckovski is not ready for test cricket, and I wonder if he is mentally fit to do so. He pulled out of the test squad before when he was selected. It is all very good making runs on the flat shield pitches that were dealt up. Even Harris and Inglis have averages of 118 in shield cricket this year. In fact Inglis is a better batsman than Carey and a better keeper. If Paine (my hero) plays till Englands ashes tour late 2021, Inglis not Carey could be the next keeper. So other than Harris for Burns, there are virtually no options.

You've been very quiet general since timmy just got his backside handed to him on a platter at mcg . As I told you weak oppostion last year and now we are on the brink of a second home series loss under tim paine as captain . I won't repeat the comments on poor captaincy at mcg with fields and tactics . The real question now is how do we turn this around at scg . Sharma to come in. India's changes with batsmen that could net them quick runs paid dividends. Something australian selectors won't do . Please don't tell me you'd stick with same side for conformity . Unless you like losing series on home soil. Interested to hear who you'd change outside of burns

How on earth did scg get given third test . Looks like Queensland is good for cricketers but not general public . Got to love state corruption for $$

How on earth has scg held on to third test . Seems Queensland will do a deal after all for cricketers and co but not general public . This changes thoughts on team a tad but hopefully burns is out . Wp is ready if warner is not apparently

Some how scg has held on to it down To the wire apparently total revaluation needed on scg form lines but certainly burns should be dropped .

Mate, Firstly, don’t delude yourself that you potted anything, on the contrary you displayed nothing but sheer ignorance … that’s actually no skin off my back – if you want to delude yourself that the Duckworth and Lewis is the ultimate system then you are all the poorer for that. Secondly, what was wrong with my original reply to you here? Not following soccer, but encountering it occasionally, in all innocence I was not aware that the Manchester-United home ground was not one and the same as the test cricket ground and in that context why are you so upset that I posed the question that I posed? Thirdly, I was also unaware that I was required to never reply to anything you wrote on here, and I cannot recall more than two or three times at most. Point scoring? Really? What is pitiful is that you seriously think so. Reeks of paranoia to me. However, if it makes you feel better I will happily comply with this directive of yours.

You didn’t pot anything at all, if you want to delude yourself that Duckworth and Lewis is the ultimate system and there is nothing better, then you are all the poorer for that. But don’t whinge, the next time it doesn’t seem quite right when it is used. Also, it was not a snooze fest, you just don’t seem capable of reading and understanding anything more complicated than a kid’s picture book, and you do yourself no favours by putting yourself forward at every opportunity as the perennial ‘not getting someone’s point’ poster. I must have missed where it was stipulated that I was required to never reply to anything you wrote on any article thereafter, although I am pretty sure I have only done so a massive two or three times at most, and contrary to your own paranoia, I was playing the ball not the man on each and every one of those small number of occasions. But if that’s what your blood pressure needs, no problem, consider it done.

I am not saying we should have picked differently, I am saying we have very little to chose from. Pick Pucovski or Burns, it matters little. I think the standard of batting in this country has never been lower, maybe over the last 5 years it was a bit lower but not much. Even in the 80's we had a good batting line up apart form the days or Dirk Wellham, Mike Veletta and Greg Richie. If Green and Pucovski come on and become stars then we have a good core with Smith and Marnus(Warner at home), but out side of that there is not much to pick from. Hopefully they click in Sydney.

Well Bernie, all I know is that I didn't hear two peeps from you on this place til I potted that snoozefest of an article you wrote about duckworth lewis, since then you've been going out of your way to find comments of mine to other people and reply to them. I said I'd do ya the courtesy of not commenting on anything else you wrote, why don't you do the same, because you're not going to get anything other than snark from me while you persist with these pitiful attempts at point scoring

Well I think the selectors chose the best 6 they thought was available. It could have been a completely different story if both Pucovski and Warner hadn't suffered injuries prior to the first test. If both were fit and the selectors had the stones to pick Green and Pucovski we could have had a top 7 of: Warner Pucovski Marnus Smith Head or Wade Green Paine On paper this is as good as we have Marnus and Smith should match Pujara and Rahane based on previous performances but they haven't clicked so far. They have proven they have the ability but both are a bit low on confidence. Warner is a proven big scorer in Australian conditions. Pucovski is an unknown quantity - particularly against the quality of this Indian attack. Head has obvious issues outside the off stump and he knows it after that look of resignation after his second innings dismissal. Wade looks more solid and capable of scoring big - he got decent starts in both digs of this test. Green looked very solid in his two and a half hours at the crease in the second innings. Paine looked in good form in Adelaide and appeared to cop a bad decision in the second innings. The Indians had the rub of the green in this match including a few decisions go their way and the uncharacteristic number of dropped catches by the Aussies. I don't think all is lost. India managed to pull themselves to together after their batting collapse in Adelaide so I can't see why Australia can't. India are entitled to celebrate their win today but Australia still have the opportunity to come back in this series. They've climbed back off the canvas before. It just needs a few things to go right for them - particularly with the batting - to fight their way back in to this contest. Can't wait for the 3rd test.

My point is that was not the case. We were never sitting pretty, we just deluded ourselves into thinking our batsmen were up to it.

Where is real man David warner??? I struggle to recall last time he failed to make it to 11 for Sunriser Hyderabad on fitness grounds!! On a seperate note, try giving your test xi and omit Travis Head you will soon realise you have dropped Allan border from the playing 11, from reactions. Finally I miss matt renshaw
