It’s the biggest day on the Australian cricket calendar: the Boxing Day Test. And it’s only bigger this year, with Australia taking on India on the hallowed turf of the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores from 10:30am (AEDT).

After the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar series under lights with the pink ball in Adelaide, the contest moves back into much more traditional ground today: the traditional Boxing Day Test, played, of course, with the red Kookaburra.

That it’s at the MCG is in itself worth celebrating. While the venue has always hosted the showpiece event, there were series concerns about whether the famous stadium would be able to welcome the two sides due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in Victoria. The hard work of everyone in the state to get the virus under control and allow the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne is well worth celebrating today.

There is, however, a crowd cap fo the match: spectator numbers will be limited to 30,000 each day – well short of the 100,000 capacity Cricket Australia would have been banking on at the start of the year, but still much higher than what would have been expected a few months ago.

One person who won’t be at the ground, though, is Indian captain Virat Kohli. After leading India throughout the limited-overs series and the first Test, the skipper has returned home to be with his wife for the birth of their first child. Regular deputy Ajinkya Rahane will captain the tourists in his place.

Kohli’s absence will, however, leave a considerable void on both the leadership and batting fronts, something Australia and their fearsome attack will no doubt be looking to exploit. Will the hosts be able to do it? Tune in as they attempt to do just that in the Boxing Day Test from 10:30am (AEDT).
