The second Test between Australia and South Africa continues with the Aussies in a commanding position after two days’ play. Join The Roar for live coverage of day 3 from 10:30am (AEDT).

South Africa’s brittle top order crumbled once again on the first day, with the Proteas only reaching a modest total of 189 thanks to a determined partnership between wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne and all-rounder Marco Jansen, who notched his maiden test half-century.

In reply, Australia reached 3/386 at the close of day 2, on a surface that offered progressively less for South Africa’s pace attack as the day wore on.

David Warner scored a much-needed century, and then made it a double, passing 8000 Test runs in the process before retiring hurt with cramp. Steve Smith chipped in with a determined 85 and Travis Head got a start, with Australia building a lead of 197 by stumps.

What intrigue remains in this test largely concerns how Australia will attempt to set up victory and the timing of a declaration later today.

Individual contributions will also be of interest. Can Mitchell Starc make any kind of contribution with his injured finger? Can Travis Head continue his sparkling form? Can Cameron Green resume after his own finger injury? Can Alex Carey spend some time in the middle and cash in against a demoralised Proteas’ attack? Can the South African top order stand up and put at least some pressure on Australia’s bowlers?

Prediction

Barring a miracle from South Africa or a dramatic turn in the weather, Australia will win the Test match. It’s just a matter of how long the Proteas can drag it out and whether they can make Australia bat again.

On a slow surface and against the tired South African seamers, Australia should bat on, build a big lead of around 450 runs and declare at or shortly after tea. The Proteas openers will dig in on a mostly placid pitch, and against a diminished Aussie attack, make it to stumps.

What didn’t I like? - there was nothing on hotspot. So significant doubt. And any old sound can cause a spike.

The mere statement that evidence exists means nothing. Until you show your evidence it remains a bare assertion with no weight or merit. Do you need help with copy and paste? There are websites that can teach you that. Go on – my post history is open for all to see.

Kallis was different to the players you have mentioned. He may not have had a devastating strike rate but he contributed to SA making decent scores which gave their bowling attack something to bowl to. Plus he was a very good slips fieldsman and pace bowler. To be able to average 55 over 166 tests from 1995 to 2013 against some pretty handy attacks speaks volumes. Averaged 48 against Australia in Australia against Warne and McGrath etc

Oh, you have been deriding Green. Backtracking now.

Fancy getting so upset by a term you obviously misunderstand. I refer to how Kallis played his innings. More Boycott than Ponting.

Cummins will deprive Green of a century by declaring.

Obviously, they can't make an abstract quality artificially.

Noone is deriding Green here Don. We are merely noting your definition of Kallis as a plodder given his strike rate is remarkably similar to Green’s. Stick to the point. Your arguments tend to wither when facts enter the debate. Do we want to go through your claim that Green took 5 wickets starting with a 19-over “old” ball again? Or how about “Nat Fyfe has the body of a 29 year-old because he’s not played football for effectively 2 years due to injury?”

Or, look at their career comparisons after 18 tests. You won't do that because your argument dies.

Yeh...and still not as good as Green. Don't expect Green to be ranked up there before his career has begun. If they rank them all after 18 tests, Green is the best ever.

He scores when he is on strike. There is no need for him to be on strike every ball. Australia doesn't need runs.

Thanks for the call David. See you all tomorrow everyone. Good day for the Aussies once again. Weather looks better for the next few days. Even with a bowler short, we should see the Aussies get the job done
