It’s Day 4 at the MCG as Australia looks to secure the Test series against South Africa with an innings victory. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 10am (AEDT).
The second Test has been nothing short of a masterclass from the Australians so far. With the ball, they have bowled tight lines, with Cameron Green leading the way on Day 1 with a maiden five-wicket haul.
David Warner silenced the critics with a double hundred in the scorching heat during his milestone 100th Test, while Alex Carey scored his maiden Test century – courtesy of some great resistance shown from Green with the bat.
South Africa’s batting has some soul-searching to do as they face a Test series loss in Australia for the first time in 17 years. Dean Elgar has failed to lead from the front as skipper, which means the other senior player in Temba Bavuma and the rest of the Protea’s top order has to show some fight to try to push this contest to day five.
While you do expect this Test to be over within day four or early day five, we could see a few careers in the Proteas’ batting lineup take off with a big knock or two should they step up under huge pressure.

First ball: 10am (AEDT)

let's see the poms try and throw the bat bazball-style against our attack depth. I'm predicting a big thud back to reality for them if they try it.

South Africa Pl learn from England team Capt Ben Stokes. He transformed the team. Pl.bring in other batsmen fly them out of SA or even bring in Faf de Plessis with a good match fee from local BBL in Aus.Old people are better applicators of batting or sack the Captain Elgar like Joe Root was pushed aside.

Er… sorry “not bat first” LOL. Markram has 5 Test centuries. That’s more than De Bruyn (1), Erwee (1), Bavuma (1), Zondo (0) together. Markram is younger and his average 34 is still superior to all of them at Test level. J. Malan might also offer some batting ability the others can not?

Now all the SA20 teams are owned by the franchises of the IPL now that sounds like short term gain & long term pain let’s hope we don’t follow suit with our BBL comp. I heard that they think following India ‘s lead that money from comp will transcend & allow the money to develop local talent in all 3 formats.Don’t you need to own it first unless l’m missing something

Er ... Cummins decided to bowl - and Markram has been averaging around 20 in test cricket for the past 2 or so years so isn't even in the squad. Which is a shame as he is a great batsman to watch. I thought he was going to be the next great SA batman. But must admit I was very surprised Cummins decided to bowl given how brown the pitch looked plus no cloud cover. Must have sensed how poor the SA batting was and decided to make the most of whatever was in the pitch on day 1. As it turned out he was correct. The SAffers should have made at least 350 in their first dig but collapsed twice. Cummins has the Midas touch at the moment. Hope it lasts!

They have a selection criterion that works against picking the best side.

Does Maharaj even get in the team on current form?

Lots of jigsaw pieces but one would assume the Captain needs to lead from the front.

He probably is. But as a senior player, is a bit of a sad indictment on the Proteas' depth.

You know the drill for the Aussies bat, bowl and Dettol! Don't forget to add Dettol anti bacterial laundry sanitiser for good measure to keep that nasty COVID away! Biggest load of marketing cods wallop needing laundry sanitiser, apparently Lyon reckons it works when adding to the washing machine after a hard day of playing cricket.

Markram been poor in Test cricket for a long time and rightfully got dropped. Petersen injured. Bowling been fine but how much longer can you carry a team if the batting is consistently letting you down?

Nah not a "great" average but he batted above his average this Test. He's probably exceeding his talent.

Well done Australia. Comprehensive victory against a very disappointing SA team. SA’s batting is below Test standard and their bowling way too inconsistent. Markram and Petersen probably need to be looked at. To good Cummins and team. I hope those giving Cummins plenty over his decision to bat are good for a humble apology? Well done Davey Warner. It’s a good time to finish up now.
