Against all odds, the third ODI of the series between Australia and South Africa in Hobart will decide who walks away with limited over bragging rights. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 1:50pm (AEDT).

The second match turned out to be an entertaining contest ruled by the ball. Neither side could put together much of an effort with the bat, making it a truly old-school ODI.

Australia were rolled for 231 in a poor performance, although Chris Lynn provided some entertaining hitting in the middle of the innings, while Alex Carey top scored with 47.

It was Adam Zampa, however, who produced perhaps the most important piece of batting we have seen in the first two matches of this series, with his 22 at the end of the innings ultimately leading the Australians to victory.

Despite going for plenty of runs, Kagiso Rabada was the most dangerous bowler for South Africa finishing with 4/54, while Dale Steyn (2/31) and Dwaine Pretorius (3/32) were consistently threatening.

It isn’t often that a team can defend 231 without bowling the opposition out in this day and age, but the Australians managed to do it with some bold captaincy.

The wickets of Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram immediately put the host nation on the front foot, and Aaron Finch opting to bowl out his frontline bowlers a little early proved to be a match-winning move.

Marcus Stoinis was the hero with the ball finishing with three wickets, and keeps holding his spot in the side having shown his value in all three facets of the game in recent times.

South Africa may simply view the 2nd ODI as an aberration more than anything else, and likely back themselves to blow a vulnerable, yet confident Australian team out of the water.

It makes for an intriguing match-up in Hobart on Sunday afternoon.

Prediction
While the Australians have created a bit of momentum for themselves heading into the deciding match of the series, the South Africans have the stronger team overall and should simply be too good for the host nation.

The Proteas should win this game and the series.

Remembrance day is hardly celebrated in South Africa at all, despite the notable contributions that South Africans made in both World Wars. I suspect its because South African's historical world view is dominated by internal matters i.e. Apartheid, despite people of all races having lost their lives in conflict. I think its a bit sad, but hardly "disgraceful", given the context.

I will disagree. I don't think there should be a feud between these 2 ( unless they are vying for same spot) as they are very different kind. Stoinis is du plesis type batsman who can change gear. Maxwell is used for different purpose. Like today where he failed. But today I don't think I will give majority fault to batsman like other games. Today 2 of the best bowlers in the world ( starc & Cummins, 40 runs of 2 overs) has cost the match. As for as langer favourite is concerned, as much as I believe he has soft corner for "Marsh" there are others who are getting as much as opportunity as they should have, agar to name one. Today big Marsh went really big and played a solid innings. What I don't understand is if playing in 2 format is burden for him why he doesn't concentrate on 1 he plays best? On the back of his poor test record , he scored 3 centuries in last 6-7 ODIs I think.

You can blame the selectors for that. He is not one of their favourites.

I suspect you ought to be pointing the finger at Lynn, Finch and Head. What's with this fixation with "Langer favourites"? If such a thing existed, Australia's 2 best OD players, Agar and NCN would get a game. No favouritism there.

He had the opportunities to build up an inning in the first two odis when he batted ahead of Stoinis. But he didn't capitalize.Stoinis has been the best performed player in this series.Stop complaining on everything.

I liked Maxwell's role in this game - give him a decent bowl and also bat him at seven where more often that not he can come in and just go for it. Let other batsmen try to build an innings, let him be him.

Well Maxwell isn't rated as highly as Stoinis in the batting. And Stoinis wasn't up to the challenge. Took all the time then got out. However despite losing us the game he is a Langer favorite so will keep getting picked. For my money Maxwell is the better bat and should have come in and had time to establish. However he is not a coach favourite. Langers international cricket coaching career win ratio can only improve. He has a 100% series losing record in all formats.

SMarsh an enigma. When he is going he makes it look so easy, should have played 100 tests for Australia with his talent. Nervous starter.

He just isnt good enough and should be nowhere near the World Cup squad! Uzzie used to get dropped after 1 bad game (never got a good run in ODI for some reason) but Head seems to get a number of chances! Time to go!

I wouldn't have him in the World Cup plans at this rate if S.Marsh's ODI form continues like this, a fit Khawaja comes into this side and one or both of Smith and Warner return to ODI cricket.

I am heartened by this performance. Aussies just a batsman/all rounder short. Maxwell at 7 gives the batting better shape.

South Africa 5/320 def Australia 9/280 South Africa have won the series against Australia, with a dominant performance with the bat in the final ODI. Faf du Plessis (125) and David Miller (139) turned the team's fortunes around after a poor start, and Australia had nothing in response with the ball. Glenn Maxwell was the host nation's best bowler, however the team conceded 75 runs in the final five overs of the South African innings, which hurt immensely. Shaun Marsh's 106 was a highlight for Australia, as were Marcus Stoinis' 63 and Alex Carey's nicely-constructed 42, but Steyn and Rabada proved to be too strong. Thanks to all for joining me today, hope you all enjoyed the game and the coverage!

Demoting Maxwell to number 7 was dumb, and Stoinis and Marsh chewed up too many dot balls instead of pushing for 1's and 2's.
