The drama and controversy is set to continue as Australia seeks to level the series against India in Ahmedabad. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3pm (AEDT).
Predicting the series to date has been near impossible, with turning, slow and bounce-less wickets the talk of the town. Plenty of commentary now surrounds the apparent duo of pitches the Indian ground staff have prepared at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Due to the difficulty of batting conditions, both sides have collapsed more than once, as the spinners have appeared near unplayable at different times. With this Test likely to be wrapped up in three days, as has been the pattern of the series, each and every session is potentially game turning.
Despite calls to steer away from what some felt was an over-supply of spinners, the return of Cameron Green allowed the selectors to back the Aussie slow men in Indore. They did the job, with Nathan Lyon reminding everyone that he is far from a spent force, despite the younger men selected alongside him.
The question marks around precisely which wicket will be used, the Indian batting line-up and the Australian’s propensity to make poor subcontinental shot selections when under pressure, make this an intriguing contest. Whilst the visitors cannot take back the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a 2-2 series result would be something of an achievement after such an appalling start three weeks back.
Team news sees neither side likely to change drastically. Mohammed Shami is rumoured to be backed to replace Mohammed Siraj, and KS Bharat’s poor form with the bat could see Ishan Kishan into the team, in an attempt to prevent yet another dramatic collapse.
Australia is likely to enter the match with the same XI that triumphed in Indore and once again, with the spinners to hold the potential key to success.
Prediction
Logic suggests that the longer the two teams play in Indian conditions, the better the chance the locals have of exerting dominance over the contest. However, the Australians did finally show some grit in Indore, even without skipper Pat Cummins.
They will need every ounce of it again to have a chance in the fourth Test, with India almost certain to dig in and avoid the batting collapse that cost them in the previous match.
India to win on the fourth morning.

Are you suggesting Gilchrist was an all-rounder, very good with both bat and ball?

Albo loves his cricket...he loves his sport. I suspect Modhi is a cricket tragic too. Maybe Tassie can build Albo Arena.

Khawaja and Green made 85 from 20 overs. Khawaja and the top four made 170 (2 X 85) from 70 overs. I know that the ball was older and the bowlers tired towards the end of the day, but Handscomb, for all the excellence of the ball that dismissed him had equal opportunity to score well. Green plays higher in the order for WA and it showed. Application , application, application The Indians bowled to his strengths as they did to Usman. Don't give either of them width or anything short. The pitch is giving them nothing. I'm all for it

The joys of working a four day week. On the beers tonight watching the cricket, don’t work Fridays, and should the match go for five days, it’s a Public Holiday in Victoria on Monday. Life is good.

International bonhomie, with visiting PMs with not a jot of cricket in their political bones exchanging selfies today, when the BCCI rolled out a raging, errr, featherbed. Smith won the toss and elected to bat. Well done Ussie. Can't wait for the sequel tomorrow when, one hopes, sooky Ashwin starts pulling faces/starts varying his runup/blows up a fielder (tick any of the above); and Jadeja yabbers for a ridiculous unfruitful review. Shami is a terrific competitor, Sharma will cook him with overs tomorrow.

Look, you’ve got to be responsible and stay at home if you’re not well. I’ll be in on Monday. I’m a team player, I can shake this flu.
