After a first day dominated by Pakistan, Australia’s bowling attack will need early wickets on Day 2 of the test match in Rawalpindi. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage of the action from 4.00pm AEDT.
There’s sure to be a sombre mood to start the day after the shock death of cricket legend Shane Warne.
Australian captain Pat Cummins has already spoken about the impact Warnie’s death has had on the team and as trivial as a game of cricket is right now after the week we’ve had, it’s what Shane Warne and Rod Marsh would want to see. More cricket.
On a track devoid of much grass, Babar Azam won a very important toss and elected to bat. Australia’s worst fears were confirmed after only 7 overs of the Pakistan innings, when Nathan Lyon was introduced into the attack.
With only one specialist spinner in the eleven, Australia’s attack was pace heavy and Lyon was in for plenty of overs on the first day.
Pakistan took full control, moving to 1/245 at stumps. Opener Imam-ul-Haq scored his first test century, after being out of the starting 11 for the past 18 months. He was unbeaten at the close of the play.
Experienced Azhar Ali also put together a patient 64 on Day 1 and will be looking to move to his 19th test century in the first session.
Australia didn’t bowl that badly, keeping Pakistan to only 245 on a lifeless pitch. However, with the same pitch likely to wear and spin later in the game, Australia find themselves in a precarious position.
There will no doubt be a minute’s silence at the start of play to commemorate the passing of Shane Warne. Together with Rod Marsh, two of Australia’s cricketing icons lost to us in the past 48 hours. It is a shocking time for Australian cricket fans, and our hearts go out to both families.

Thanks David for the tireless performance. Draw is obvious. Where to from here?

Obviously they are not batting on the Great Eastern Highway. For the unwashed that's the road between Perth and Coolgardie. More corrugations than you can count! Apparently it's bitumen. Pick 22 yards on that I challenge you. Any 22 will do!

No worries. Sleep well. If you have a heart attack in the near future, be sure to let me know and I'll see to it that it is the leading roar story for the following week.

Nah. Only 4 hours sleep last night. I’ll have a heart attack at this rate. But unlikely to be make it’s a news story on Roar.

So half an hour early start on days 3 and 4. Pakistan deprived of a shot at our top early late in the day. Australia's openers to start in much better circumstances tomorrow. What little chance of the game not being a draw has just reduced even further.

Right. Well that’s it for me for The Roar tonight. No chance I want to hang around for another bad news story like the last 24 hours.

479 is enough . Either the pitch holds up everyone bats forever or ...it doesn’t . Pakistan’s 3 spinners can bowl all day long giving the 2 quicks short hard spells .
