Australia have a mountain to climb on Day 3 of the first Test against Pakistan and must stand up with the bat if they want to avoid losing. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 5pm (AEDT).
The tourists have spent the first portion of this match in the field, trying in vain to dismiss a Pakistan side who batted incredibly negatively for the most part.
While they eventually got there at the back-end of Day 2, it’s going to be tough to respond with the bat now on a pitch which is likely to break up under the sweltering UAE sun in the coming days.
Pakistan ended up with 482 at only two and a half runs per over when they were finally dismissed, and their negative batting has kept Australia in the contest – if they can bat well.
The Australian openers – Usman Khawaja and Aaron Finch – made it unscathed to stumps at the end of play on Day 2, knocking off 30 of the required total.
Noting the Aussies’ long-running struggles against spin in conditions like these, though, scoring enough runs to avoid losing the match seems a way off at the moment.
Winning the game from this position will take something of a miracle. They would need to score well over 600 by the close of Day 4, batting only once and then hoping to knock Pakistan over on a crumbling Day 5 pitch.
The more likely scenario for the tourists is to bat through today, into tomorrow and ensure the worst they can do is draw the game, keeping the hosts out in the field for as long as possible.
Yasir Shah is the key man. There won’t be a heap in the pitch yet, but it will keep breaking up under the hot conditions, and the longer it goes, the better the leg-spinner will get. So long as his hip injury doesn’t flare up, he could become something of a wrecking ball.
The Aussies need everyone to contribute with the stick. Three debutants in the top seven puts extreme pressure on Usman Khawaja to go on with it today and Shaun Marsh to bat well when he gets his opportunity.

Awful Test batsman.

Bit of a stretch? His performances at 6 are mediocre. And he barely bowls. A luxury player there because the CA fraternity love the Marsh boys.

Shaun loves a collapse. His brother at #4? Hilarious. These two are usually at the heart of Australia's batting problems overseas.

Chance of pulling of the draw now is very small. But I’m Making the call that Pakistan will bat 50 overs tomorrow. And there will be 20+ comments here saying ‘why are they still batting’.

Well, the positive, the first session was good. The 3rd session finished off okay. Just a blip in the middle where guys like S.Marsh and the debutants forgot all about footwork and either played too far from their body or just thrust their hands to hard toward the ball - looking like rank amateurs - that was embarrassing.

Think he bowls very slowly for these type of wickets .. looks at Lyon's speeds in subcon tests last year . As Lyon said you have to bowl ugly - Holland tries to bowl too classical stuff , gives it air which does not work un ths present era

Should have picked Maxwell.

I have had many dreams but they never become real 130/140 on their home turf? I guess we have to be positive in some respect would you put your house & with the pitch deteriorating uh no!

There is no chance of a Draw. Probably the match would be over by the end of 4th. Day.

That's going to wrap up our coverage of today's play here on The Roar. As always, thanks for tuning in and I hope you enjoyed the coverage. Sarah Wildy will be live from 5pm (AEST) for Day 4, then I'll be back for Day 5, so be sure to keep it locked here so you don't miss a moment of the action as the Aussies desperately try to cling on for a draw. Bye for now.

If we can roll them for 120/140 it gives us a micro chance of a target we can reach.

STUMPS Well, a positive finish to a very poor day for Australia, but it was one which started with such promise. Easy to see how you can lose a Test match in a session when you collapse like a house of cards, losing 10 for 60 and the final 9 for 42 in that batch of wickets. Bilal Asif was the destroyer, with the debutant off-spinner picking up 6. The Aussies had started the day well through Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja, but with the rest folding, they were rolled for 202, 280 behind. Australia have then picked up three wickets in the 17 overs to stumps, Pakistan increasing their lead to 325 in the process after some good bowling from Jon Holland and Nathan Lyon. Over: 16.2 Pakistan: 3/44

Mitchell Marsh will probably take another beating on this site if he doesn't rescue Oz in the second innings, but i think that is totally unfair. Mitch has shown himself to be a rising star of Oz cricket, although to be fair, batting at no. 4 is probably a bit of a stretch. Looking back at past batting performances on the sub-continent, many Australians have failed repeatedly before finally getting their Heads(sic) around playing spin. I would though, expect him to be a integral part of Australian cricket on the tour of England at least.
