Australia have a mountain to climb on Day 3 of the first Test against Pakistan and must stand up with the bat if they want to avoid losing. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 5pm (AEDT).

The tourists have spent the first portion of this match in the field, trying in vain to dismiss a Pakistan side who batted incredibly negatively for the most part.

While they eventually got there at the back-end of Day 2, it’s going to be tough to respond with the bat now on a pitch which is likely to break up under the sweltering UAE sun in the coming days.

Pakistan ended up with 482 at only two and a half runs per over when they were finally dismissed, and their negative batting has kept Australia in the contest – if they can bat well.

The Australian openers – Usman Khawaja and Aaron Finch – made it unscathed to stumps at the end of play on Day 2, knocking off 30 of the required total.

Noting the Aussies’ long-running struggles against spin in conditions like these, though, scoring enough runs to avoid losing the match seems a way off at the moment.

Winning the game from this position will take something of a miracle. They would need to score well over 600 by the close of Day 4, batting only once and then hoping to knock Pakistan over on a crumbling Day 5 pitch.

The more likely scenario for the tourists is to bat through today, into tomorrow and ensure the worst they can do is draw the game, keeping the hosts out in the field for as long as possible.

Yasir Shah is the key man. There won’t be a heap in the pitch yet, but it will keep breaking up under the hot conditions, and the longer it goes, the better the leg-spinner will get. So long as his hip injury doesn’t flare up, he could become something of a wrecking ball.

The Aussies need everyone to contribute with the stick. Three debutants in the top seven puts extreme pressure on Usman Khawaja to go on with it today and Shaun Marsh to bat well when he gets his opportunity.
