Australia have taken narrow honours on Day 2 of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s, with the tourists knocking England over for 258 on the first day of actual play.
After a washed out Day 1, Tim Paine won the toss and elected to bowl, and was vindicated as England folded, only saved by some runs late in the piece, led by Jonny Bairstow’s half century.
Australia then faced a difficult 13-over stint to stumps, but only the loss of David Warner put a dampener on a day they will be fairly happy with.
England first innings: 10/258 (77.1)
Australia first innings: 1/30 (13)
Australia trail by 228 runs with ten wickets remaining.
Much brighter conditions will meet England and Australia as they are finally able to get the second Test of the 2019 Ashes series underway at Lord’s. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 8pm (AEST).
With a complete washout on Day 1 at Lord’s, the match will revert to a four-day game, meaning the follow-on is now just 150 runs, and 98 overs will be bowled per day instead of the usual 90.
The Australian side come into the contest full of confidence having finally broken through for their first win at Edgbaston since 2001 in the series opener.
It was an incredible performance from the tourists, particularly when you consider how far behind they were on Day 1, at one point being 8 for 122.
Aggressive cricket will need to be the order of the day at Lord’s if either team want to push for a result though, with more rain forecast throughout Day 3 and 4, although, unlike yesterday, we shouldn’t lose entire days.
While all the talk before yesterday’s rain was that the pitch would be dry and flat, maybe taking turn later in the match, it could well now have plenty of moisture underneath it, and it’s thought whichever team wins the toss is likely to bowl first.
England will be especially keen to bowl first, with Jofra Archer set to make his Test debut for the home side in what is essentially a Test they can’t afford to lose if they harbour hopes of regaining the Ashes.
Archer, with his express pace, will provide the English attack a point of difference, and a new avenue in attempting to get Steve Smith out before he makes another squillion runs.
Smith made twin-centuries at Edgbaston and was a major part of the reason Australia were able to take the 1-0 series lead, but he needs support from the rest of the Australian order this time around, particularly at the top of the order.
David Warner and Cameron Bancroft both failed at Edgbaston, and must find a way to get amongst the runs at Lord’s, with Marcus Harris pushing for a spot at Headingley if they don’t.
The other key question for Australia is shaping as the nature of their bowling attack. Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Peter Siddle all appear to be competing for two spots with James Pattinson rested.
Hazlewood was thought to have the inside running alongside Siddle, but with a shorter match and plenty of rain yesterday, Australia could be tempted to go with the quicker bowling of Starc.

I agree with showing grit but it’s dispiriting to watch him play and not see any intent or obvious scoring initiative. His last thought is to get forward to drive, he has no inclination to cut or pull, and his work off his pads lacks timing and intent. He’s a better player than we’re seeing

Siddle and hazlewood.. Something different.. Really ken?. Starc in. Anytime with one of them to contain.

Langer is such a stupid coach. England with so many rookies in their team. And we are without our most aggressive bowler starc. With him in our team, England's tailenders wouldn't have contributed that much as they have. Starc in, siddle out. We already have hazlewood and cummins to contain, both of whom can contain as well as take quick wickets

And with Harris in the stands watching on.......does Warner come down to his 2nd innings knock? He just looks so tentative - confidence......a funny thing. Khawaja.....yeah gee, he held a dolly outfield catch......the gully catch though, a specialist position....not good enough, straight through the hands....I guess at that height where a slipper like Ponting would bend the knees to catch it in front of his eyes with fingers pointing up.

That record was always quite poor out of Australia. It’s a reputation built largely on swashbuckling innings on flat pitches in Australia, not a record, that continually gets Warner picked.

It was a poor drop but, to be fair, he did take two catches after that and has taken plenty of good ones too in his time. I'm personally more worried about Warner, who's reintroduction to the side has seen him hiding too deep to catch anything at a wide and deep first slip and batting like he'll never make it past 10 in England.

I'm assuming Australia are happy with the end of day status - but gee - if the spud Khawaja had've snaffled Burns on 16 for Sidds - - - that would've been was it 3-42 or something like that - instead they put on 66 and got through to lunch. Might've rolled 'em before tea instead?? And it's not like it was a difficult catch - as straight forward as he could hope for. It's a weakness - having him in the field at all - where can they hide him? Should Wade have been in the cordon? After all this time and he (Uzzie) still hasn't developed himself.

Sorry but you can't count his life last test AND the wicket, given on the wicket he was not out.

That record wasn’t much chop against strong bowling attacks. Coach had perfect reason not to select these two after South Africa, on character alone. Now their efforts with willow may provide him with no choice. Langer spent a lot of capital on these coaches picks.

I wonder if having so many bowlers to call upon gives an added bonus of surprise wickets? Although Hazlewood and Siddle and others have been around for a while alot of these batsmen haven’t faced some of these bowlers at test level and they all offer something different.

Ugly from Bancroft ,but just what he needed. Taylor made a good point if he can just last 30 minutes and start finding confidence with his front foot it will flow from there.
