Australia might hold the upper hand in the third Ashes Test, but their job of retaining the urn is far from complete as England look to hit back on Day 3 at Headingley. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 8pm (AEST).
The Australians went into yesterday’s action right on the back foot, having been skittled in their first innings for 179, but by the end of a staggering day which saw 16 wickets fall, they were right back ahead in the match and holding all of the cards.
It was the bowlers who did it for them. While the sun was out and the conditions were better for batting, the pitch had just enough in it for bowlers who wanted to be patient and nibble around in the right areas.
Josh Hazlewood was the pick as he took five wickets, but England weren’t helped along by some horrendous shot options, as they eventually got rolled for 67.
Joe Denly, who scored 12, was the only man who made it into double figures, but now holds the unwanted record of lowest top score in a completed English innings in the history of Test cricket.
Finding themselves behind by 112 runs, England’s bowlers had to be good, and while they took some early wickets, it was Marnus Labuschagne who controlled Australia into a position of power.
The replacement for the prolific Steve Smith finished the day with 53 not out, and with Matthew Wade able to add 33 as well in an important partnership, Australia will resume on 6 for 171, giving them a lead of 283.
With so much time left in the game, Australia will want every run possible, and while Labuschagne is at the crease, he now needs to be supported by the tail as the tourists attempt to push up towards and beyond 300.
England are frankly in all sorts, but given the pitch isn’t doing heaps and Australia bowled about as good as they possibly could have yesterday, they would still be confident of chasing a total, particularly because, at this stage, Nathan Lyon won’t be as large of a threat.
England must get the remaining wickets in a timely manner on Day 3 though and find themselves chasing under 300, before getting a really good start with the bat.
Rory Burns may well hold the key, while the role of Jason Roy and Joe Root, who have both been out of form at the top of the order, will be crucial, because a good start is an absolute must if they are going to hunt down a score.
Be sure to join The Roar for live coverage of Day 3 at Headingley from 8pm (AEST) and don’t forget to add a comment in the section below.

Scene is set for some stoke heroics tomorrow. New ball key they need to use it seam up like they did in the furst dig. I thought they wasted new ball yesterday to much scrambled seam and to short. Both stokes and root are back foot players so need to be a bit fuller tomorrow

But cake is boring without the icing. (Re Forwards v Backs) —– On body type it is a physical development thing. Like there a lanky types in NSW and Qld and, conversely, stocky types in Vic, Tas, NT, SA & WA. Training rigours determine the body type. You do have a point. Your right an inordinate amount of fast bowlers come from the League states. —- Australia is the best country in the world where Union is the 3rd (or worst) football. Same with Soccer.

I live about a kilometre away - but am a Raiders member so I spend a bit of time here - and yes it gets pretty chilly here. Looking like a nice day for the Manly match today.

Maybe. Probably. We’d at least have a far better back line. But games are won by the tight five though, backs can do nothing without a platform, and I’m not sure how many of those body types are choosing AFL instead of union. Imagine how good we’d be at cricket if all those tall lanky units decided to try their hand at fast bowling.

I think England and SA can win it playing their best rugby. Ireland and Wales still have a chance, but Ireland’s lock has been picked and Wales are not as consistent and don’t have the depth for a tournament. NZ will beat any other team, no matter how well that team is playing IF they are playing their best rugby. But they have been variable of late. Still must be the favourites. I don’t think Australia are in it at all, I put us with Scotland and Argentina as rank outsiders.

think eng 40 percent chance now, aussies 60 percent, Its close but the new ball is so key really, just need to get 3 wickets with the new balls first 20 overs . A nusiance that england get 8 overs to get their eye in tomorrow morning but cummins and hazel wood should be ready to rip at the 8 over mark tmw . hoping paine doesn't mess about and bowls them pronto with new ball. If they don't get two or three by over 25 with new ball tomorrow its going to get tricky as england bats deep. Aussie quicks will be up for it though

I think it could get really tight . England now 40 percent chance to win for me . Everyone knows the new ball is key , then lyon as the day goes on , possible laba with leg spin too. Cummins and hazel wood new ball spell going to be huge. They bowled tightly today which was a credit to the aussie bowlers as pitch wasnt giving them much. It was the best day to bat for sure although its hard to get a read on tomorrow. Headingly often does this, batting gets better day 3, 4 and can turn late day 5. We need it to turn tomorrow .

If we didn't play Australian Football and Rugby League we'd be the world's best at Rugby Union.

The ball is turning, i dont think its going to be as easy as it seems. 8 overs to new ball and this is the only partnership that can get England home. Today was the best batting condition, i am afraid i think England might have pushed things a little bit too far.

Cheers Scott, to be honest I assumed it would’ve been game over by now but at least there’s hope! Shame about Norwich but we pumped Ireland in the rugby so I’d say it’s a 2 out of 3 today.
