'Most of Australia hate me': Marsh's response to selection backlash

By The Roar / Editor

Mitchell Marsh’s return to Test cricket wasn’t welcomed by everyone when first announced, but the all-rounder helped the visitors fight back on the opening day at the Oval.

With the Australians citing a high workload for the bowlers over the first four Tests, Travis Head was left out of the side so Marsh could be brought back to provide some much-needed support for the pacemen.

WATCH DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS

However he would do more than that on Day 1, being the most dangerous of Tim Paine’s bowlers as he picked up what is currently a career-best 4/35 to help Australia wrestle back the momentum after opting to bowl first.

Speaking after the day’s play, Marsh was asked about how he seems to “divide opinions in Australia” and gave a brutally honest response as he declared he hopes he can win the respect of fans through the way he continues trying to prove himself at the top level after setbacks.

That's one of the weirdest comments in a while! If you acknowledge that commenters have played the game, then give some credit for understanding the inner workings of selection and underachieving. Career journalists might nod when sportsmen make statements, but if they've never graced a field, then they have no idea what hard working players go through when being overlooked for serial underachievers. I understand flag waving, but many commenters here are quite right, the Australian public commenting on Marsh don't hate him, they merely believe that he has received an extended opportunity to level his stats out, build partnerships with the top order, carry the bottom order through by topping up the total and build pressure in bowling partnerships. He hasn't done that, despite five times the opportunity of most players. He will be a useful contributor in short form, but is out of his depth in Test cricket and his stats are a reflection of that.

I think it works along the lines of everyone is OK with criticising whoever until it's one of their favourite players being criticised. Then the hackles are raised! I'm not going to let on who my favourites are, but they generally aren't batsmen.

You are not thinking. You might be on the wrong site for the stuff you are trying to do.

Yes it does, past performance over a VERY LONG (31 tests) period is a good measure of what a player will do in the future. Marsh has failed in 90% of his previous innings, extremely solid evidence that he'll perform poorly if given another extended run.

Really Don? Where is he batting right now? Jesus dude you are actually delusional

Great work with the ball, Mitch. I think Mitch's response sheds some light on one of the problems. Fan respect isn't a lottery that can be won. It can only be earned and in Mitch's case, the selectors have placed a large hurdle in the way, in the form of regular unmerited and unwarranted selection. The two sides of the Mitch Marsh coin, for me are- it isn't Mitch's fault selectors pick him His test and even his domestic red ball performances simply don't justify his selection as a test number 6. Hopefully for Mitch he can close the gap between what could be and what is. Until then selectors should remember when next preaching about "promise" or "potential" that 'fine words doth butter no parsnips'.

It is certainly not more than that. It is the same posting lots of times.

You look at things in a strange way. How he has played in 31 Tests has no influence on how he plays now. He should have had over 50 tests...maybe 70 by now but his form and injury haven't allowed that. He stated that in the clip above. It would benefit you to have the courtesy to listen to it. Now he is in form and others are out of form so he gets another go. A proper sports fan would wish him well. His success with the ball has no relation to a past Test record.

Marsh's recent stats on this tour indicate the contrary. BTW, his excellent form with the bat will see him at #5. The higher order is where he bats best.

Anger and hate are too strong to describe what I’ve seen. It’s smacks of exaggeration

That Rod Marsh thing is from causal fans at best. Most real fans know who his father actually is. He does get a sky sympathetic hearing from commentators, coaches and selectors because his father is mates with all of them It’s certainly more than 9 people. They see other players who don’t aim up get permanently banished from national selection whilst Mitch gets chance after chance. Their feelings are as legitimate as yours are in constant defense of him

Warner has received much more criticism than Marsh ever has even before the cheating scandal. Others in the past as well. It’s the job. Just like being a politician or any other high profile position. Scrutiny and criticism will come your way

Where’s this hate? I’ve never seen anyone say hate. Dislike of his play and criticism is not hate. It’s only based on his play and not him as a person. He’s supposed to be a professional.

It’s 31 tests of evidence Don. I’ve always said he’s a perfect limited overs player and should possibly captain those sides in the future. But he’s had enough chances at test level to suggest he’s not up to tests. His first class batting numbers aren’t good enough for a top 6 spot and even the lower ranked test sides mostly have better all rounders than him. De Granhomme, Shakib, Holder etc are all better in both facets of the test game than him.

Maybe it’s just media beat ups and young millennial players not being able to handle criticism that’s not actually personal. Everyone knows that Aussies are very passionate about sport and will have strong opinions. It’s part of the job description.

He might be healthy but he looks heavy to me. Has a similar body to Watson which was always too heavy and would cause injuries at times

He has hit a couple of tons. But it’s whats on either side of those tons that’s the problem. He’s an excellent limited overs player

The key is to only pick a Marsh for a few games at a time. Comeback matches they always play well

I see little criticism of Mitch the man. The player on the other hand....
