As an experienced senior member of the team, and former captain, Smith is entitled to give his opinion on on-field decisions, just as I'm sure Warner and others do. It's others in the media who are pushing for Smith's reinstatement who should put a sock in it.
Never liked how Smith white anted Maxwell with the "train smarter" comment, and threatening to put Maxwell at number 8 in the order.
Would be bad enough if Maxwell was actually in bad form at the time, but his form was perfectly acceptable for a late innings slogger.
He was upfront about it albeit probably it was one of the more belligerent things he has ever done. It was Greg, Lillee and Marsh that were less than open about it. Let's not forget the selectors part in this by "Chappell @ home, Hughes away" doctrine stupidity.

Re: Hughes. ‘White-anting’ is something done subversively. Chappelli, by definition, didn’t whiteant. He did it upfront.

Smith should never captain again. He’s far more valuable as a batsman. Let him focus on that
