The countdown to the NRL season continues tonight with the annual All Stars clash between the Indigenous All Stars and the Maori All Stars. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 8:10pm (AEDT).
After rugby league opened the year with the Nines last weekend, the pre-season moves back to the 13-man game from now on. There are a plenty of NRL trials this weekend, but the highlight of this weekend will be this All Stars clash.
Despite a number of withdrawals from Laurie Daley’s original squad, with Andrew Fifita, Adam Elliott and Ryan James all unavailable through injury, this Indigenous All Stars team is still very strong.
Latrell Mitchell will start at fullback in an exciting back line headlined by Blake Ferguson and Josh Addo-Carr. The back row also looks strong, with David Fifita and Wade Graham sure to cause havoc on the Maori edges.
If the Indigenous All Stars are a bit thin, it’s in the front row and that’s exactly where the Maori All Stars are strong.
Although James Tamou and Nelson Asofa-Solomona have withdrawn from the Maori team, a side featuring the Bromwich brothers and Zane Tetevano will look to make plenty of yards through the middle.
If they do, the likes of Kalyn Ponga and Jahrome Hughes will appreciate the space.
All in all, these are two strong squads and we are in for a great game.
Prediction
At this stage of the season, all players from both squads will get plenty of game time. Because of this, depth is key in this match and I think the Maori All Stars have the edge in this department.
Although, with class in both back lines, we are sure to see plenty of points scored.

Great point. It’s so confusing just calling them indigenous all stars... no one knows what it means or where they’re from

'Indigenous' doesn't mean Australian. Why isn't it 'Indigenous Australians'?

The MC of after game funmanship dealt with Brandon Smith well... Nice work. Should be more great speakers like him.

Happy for the swap to go ahead, Joe, but, didn't think he was great in the trial; maybe trying too hard to prove something.

As good as anything I've heard.

Brandon Smith has taken out a well deserved Man of the Match. When Cameron retires, the Storm will have another match winning Smith at hooker.

Full Time The Maori All Stars have beaten the Indigenous All Stars 30-16 in an entertaining match tonight, after scoring 3 tries in the final quarter of the match. The Maori dominated the first half in all areas other than the scoreboard, with a late try from Blake Ferguson cutting the Maori lead. The Indigenous side took that momentum into the 3rd quarter and a David Fifita break led to a James Roberts try, to put them in front. However, some errors in the last 20 minutes gave the Maori possession and territory. Brandon Smith had a huge game and single handedly turned the game in the Maori All Stars favour, before Dylan Walker put the icing on the cake. This game was played in tremendous spirit, whilst obvious that both sides desperately wanting to win. The only downside was injuries with DWZ succumbing to a back injury, Chris Smith a knee injury whilst Wade Graham finished early with concerns over his ankle. Was Cody Walker on the field.

Seriously wish the NRL would let Harry Grant swap to the Tigers. The way he played today he was one of the best in the Storm v Warriors game but having the two Smiths in front of him he has next to no chance of starting a game this year.

I agree John. Even on the last play of the game, Smith scores and who dives on him late? Mitchell. He looks like a liability.

Thanks for a great call, David - what a great, free flowing game. How good is it to have League back!

Nice finish by the Maoris. They have been excellent! Really proud of the Storm boys and the ex Storm boys in Proctor and old man Blair. Hughes didn't look out of place at 7, steady hand and good skills. Bromich boys solid but Kenny wouldn't be happy with the dropped ball. Smith though was the star, great game, involved in everything and gave it 100% as he always does.

Couldn't comprehend at first when the Roosters "wanted him off their books". Now I can. Swollen head with an insipid grin.

A very entertaining game.. Maori were outstanding in the last quarter and well deserved winners. Latrells much vaunted move to fullback needs a good look at... he was the invisible man
