The North Queensland Cowboys will play their final game at their inaugural home ground on Thursday night against the same club they opened the venue against, the Canterbury Bulldogs in what will be a special night for the club. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:50pm (AEST).

Not only will the Cowboys be playing their final game at the venue before they move across town next year, they will also retire Matt Scott’s number eight jersey for the game, with ‘Thumper’ retiring at the end of the season, but currently out of action after a serious medical scare.

While the Cowboys can’t make the finals and have nothing to play for there, the added motivation of playing to remember the venue fondly, as well as for Scott, should see North Queensland lift for this contest.

However, the Bulldogs have been one of the NRL’s scrappiest, grittiest teams over the last six or so weeks, and there is still a mathematical – very mathematical – chance they could make the top eight.

Playing the first game of the weekend without knowing any other results means they have it all still to play for at this point, so don’t expect the men in blue and white to roll over for the occasion in Townsville.

The Bulldogs have been on a seriously impressive runs, and while we keep waiting for the doors to be blown off the young outfit, it refuses to happen.

Despite not attacking all that well, they have won four games on the bounce, only letting in four tries across their last 320 minutes of rugby league.

That’s an incredible record for such a young team, and tonight, they take on a Cowboys side who look absolutely lost in attack.

The only player who was providing them a spark, Jake Clifford, has been dropped, and Michael Morgan’s form has fallen off a cliff. They are still without Josh McGuire and while they did beat the woeful Panthers last week, this sort of grind game that the Bulldogs like to play won’t suit them.

Prediction
The Cowboys do have plenty to play for this evening, but in a battle of poor attacks, the better defence should win out.

Don’t expect a classic, and do get on the under points total. There won’t be more than 30 in this one.

Bulldogs by 2.

Mate, I haven't been riding them at all, I just had this feeling that the Cows will do it. Big one next week, lets see how the Dogs go, lets see if they can do it?

yeah, I can't imagine cheering for the Eels or Roosters. It'd make me want to scrub my soul clean afterwards.

bit late to the party tonight but again the Dogs did us proud in defense and showed once again our attack needs a major overhaul. Foran and Lewis have so much potential but I feel they are both Five Eigths rather than match controlling halves. Also a shout out to the refs tonight. I can't say they got a call wrong, even if they blew a few too many penalties, I was watching the disallowed try on a massive TV and it did look like both hands came off the ball at some point. I'm not going to blame the game on that one call, we should have shown more in attack. Just remember Dogs fan, our final mission is to knock out those pesky Broncos. Go the Doggies!

Api will help straighten the Dogs attack and draw defenders to give the Dogs big boys a chance one on one.

PS, our attack has been terrible from game 1. We need some strike power and people to make better/calmer choices. It will happen.....whether that comes from Api I don't know mate.

It’s disappointing to be over but I’m feeling pretty comfortable not having to cheer for the Eels, Roosters, Titans and Dragons for the rest of the weekend !! :stoked:

I guess I got caught up in the "Underdogs" hype. I thought the Dogs had everything to play for and their defence has been really good in recent weeks while the Cowboys have struggled to score points against an organised defence. Tight game tonight but in the end Meaney's defensive lapse and Marshall-Kings poor pass to Lewis for the field goal killed the Dogs dead in the water. Million to one shots rarely come in for a reason mate.

Just one of those games PS! Still very pleased with the effort (....no comparison to the beginning of the season)....very pleasing steps in the right direction I think. :)

Not many games are gonna be a good news story no matter who wins! No need to bounce back next week though, your boys deserve a rest....
