The North Queensland Cowboys will be looking to spoil the Penrith Panthers run to the finals as they face off in Townsville this Friday. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting at 6pm AEST.

The Panthers are the only ones with anything still to play for in this game, although the Cowboys are still a possible chance at picking up the wooden spoon.

It is the second trip to Queensland in as many weeks for the western Sydney team, and they will be looking to rectify last weeks poor showing against the Broncos.

To do that they will need to shake off the fatigue players can get from long distance travel, as the effects of the same day trip up to Brisbane was very evident in their performance last week.

In a season to forget up north the Cowboys poor luck continues with the hulking figure of Jason Taumalolo still not a certainty to take the field after he missed last week with a foot injury. Matthew Scott is also ruled out after horrific news came to light that he had suffered a stroke.

The Panthers will be eager to dominate a weakened Cowboys forward pack and it will be here where the key matchup will be fought.

If the Panthers stalwarts in James Tamou and James Fisher-Harris can dominate the new forward combinations of the Cowboys it will do a lot to give their backs some room to move in.

Prediction
The Cows are weakened and have put in lazy performances in recent weeks with better squads than this. The Panthers may struggle to score points but even three tries should be too many for the Cowboys to overcome. Look for a close game that never really feels like the Panthers are in trouble.

Panthers by 8.

He’s a good centre and definitely a better option than a few others.

Match Report The North Queensland Cowboys have defeated the Penrith Panthers 24-10 in a display that may remind people of how highly the Cowboys were rated in the preseason. The North Queensland side never looked in danger as they applied pressure to the Panthers in defence and took their opportunities when they presented themselves in attack. A spirited performance from returning lock forward Jason Taumalolo led the Cowboys charge against their interstate rivals and he was backed up by good stints from Jordan Mclean, Coen Hess and Scott Bolton who all made their presence felt. Backing up their forwards efforts in the middle the Cowboys outside backs were a picture of perfection tonight, with some brilliant passes from Tom Opacic and Jordan Kahu setting up two well worked tries. In defence as well the Cowboys looked well up for the challenge and you could easily be mistaken in thinking they were the team fighting for their finals chances, not the Panthers. For the Penrith Panthers things do not look good from here. A string of losses has meant their finals hopes are all but over. Perhaps most frustratingly for Penrith fans is that there doesn’t seem to be any answers in sight, with tonight’s game again demonstrating they simply cannot get enough points on the board to remain competitive. After quite a tumultuous early season with Gus Gould getting the sack and talks of internal anguish over the Cleary’s, things looked to have settled down at the foot of the mountains during their streak of 7 wins. However, those good times are all but forgotten and as the western Sydney team heads into the offseason a lot of questions will remain about where they go next year in the hands of Ivan Cleary. For the Cowboys they can enjoy a good win after a horrendous season and may look to build on this in the coming weeks to signal their intent at a better year in 2020. That’s all from us here at the Roar, hope you enjoyed the call and the game!

I thought about your article after last night's game. I was happy for the Dogs to win last night and it was an enjoyable game to watch. Won't be cheering for you next week though.

He's unlucky but if you take last year as an example, would you drop Gagai or Holmes? This year he was injured early on and to be honest Oates played pretty well.

Well I think Green might have an ego now and never likes to admit he has made a bad decision. Just has to realise Granville is a 50 minute man and GGM or Tuala are worth backing ahead of Kahu. No Scott, no McGuire and a few kids getting an opportunity and what do you get?

If he was a centre he'd be a walk in, had a few decent wingers competing with him for a spot though

I agree. What is even more mysterious is their agreeing to also throw a fortune at his kid. He is a very poor game manager.. that team has looked like a rabble tonight and not for the first time this season.

So many average teams trying not to make the 8. Keeping the likes of tigers and warriors with an incentive.

80' Full Time The Panthers are a bit rudderless here. They are trying it but they can't make any kind of inroads against a very alert Cowboys line. On the last Cleary kicks to the right edge but Taulagi soars through the air to claim it for the Cowboys. The Cowboys have a very slow set and make sure the Panthers never get the ball back and on the last tackle the siren goes. Thats all folks. Cowboys: 24 Panthers: 10

Can someone please explain to me why the Panthers stole Ivan Cleary from the Tigers?Cause I'm just not seeing why this guy was worth all the fuss.

78' Just simple one out stuff here for the cowboys who make sure of their ball handling to not give the Panthers a sniff at a strip. On the last Morgan kicks it deep and asks the Panthers to go 90 if they want to score. Cowboys: 24 Panthers: 10

77' The Panthers are clearly desperate now and are throwing it around anxiously but they aren't fooling the Cowboys line. First To'o then Edwards are tackled after failed attacking raids. Fisher-Harris takes a settler back in the middle and a short kick from Maloney is too deep for his chasers and the Cows have it. Cowboys: 24 Panthers: 10

He’s lazy or trying to play flat like JT. Always trying to kick in the line. Been doing it all year. It’s my pet hate because it’s so vital to finishing your set well. That’s something the coaches should have been onto IMO.
