Match preview:

In a battle of two of the season’s most disappointing sides, the NRL regular season will close out with the Penrith Panthers taking on the Newcastle Knights at the foot of the mountains. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 4:05pm (AEST).

While a dragons fan calling other teams disappointing might seem a bit like throwing stones in glass houses, there is no objectional way to say Penrith and Newcastle have been anything other than ordinary.

There were high hopes for both of these sides coming into the new season. Penrith were a top-four chance, and, after years of being glued to the wrong end of the ladder, the Knights, under Nathan Brown, were a realistic, in fact, better than that, chance of making it into the finals.

Fast forward to the final day of the NRL season though and we see two teams who are a rabble.

Penrith had a winning run through the middle of the season, but have struggled otherwise, at times looking disinterested in defending, and at others like they had just met each other for the first time in attack.

The Knights, on the other hand, have sacked their coach, have top players out of form and very little sense of direction as to where the club is headed in the next 12 months, with a new coach on the way and finals dreams for this year lying in tatters.

But, both teams should still be keen to finish the season on a high, and if they are, it could make for an entertaining contest to wind down the regular season.

With nothing to play for, it might turn into a glorified game of touch footy, with both teams happy to throw the ball around, offloads galore and high scores being posted.

Of course, that could also end in plenty of turnovers and dropped balls, making for a sloppy game, but the hope and prayer is that it won’t descend into that, and those loyal fans who do make their way to the foot of the mountains get an entertaining afternoon.

The Panthers have plenty of bright young stars in their team who can make things happen as well, while it could be an opportunity for Nathan Cleary to show his flamboyant side.

Both sides will have players competing for contracts as well, so there is still plenty on the line from that side of the coin.

Prediction
Who knows which team is actually going to turn up to their final game of the season. Hopefully both do, but I’ll take the Panthers on their home ground in a high-scoring affair.

Panthers by 10.

I'll be spitting chips if Lottoland can't host; the match will transferred to Bankwest stadium. The thought of Manly hosting a final at Bankwest before the Eels do is horrendous.

FULLTIME The Penrith Panthers have closed out the NRL regular season with a massive dead rubber victory over the Newcastle Knights on home soil in James Maloney's farewell match. While the first 20 minutes were tight, and the Panthers were behind on the scoreboard at 4-0, they would go on to run up nine of the next ten tries to race away with the game, including three in back-to-back-to-back sets at one point. Nathan Cleary broke the record for most points by an individual for the Panthers in a single game during the game, running up four tries and not missing a goal in what was a one-sided contest. FULLTIME That's the end of that. The game winds down as the Panthers form a scrum, stopping the clock with one second left for a final play and shot at getting 60. They swing it through the hands, but it's a forward pass to Luai and that's that. The Panthers have walloped the Knights in the final game of the regular season. Panthers 54 Knights 10

BREAKING NEWS Lottoland is not guaranteed of hosting a final. The NRL was informed late on Friday evening that isolated traces of asbestos had been found in a small area of the hill at Lottoland. A final decision will be made following a safety report tomorrow night. Panthers 54 Knights 10

78' - Newcastle now looking for a consolation try. Barnett with a run, then Lino takes on the line and he drops the ball. This is just flat out ugly from the Knights. Panthers 54 Knights 10

77' - Into the final minutes now. Newcastle working it out of their own end through Barnett, then they are up to halfway with Fitzgibbon picking up a penalty. Panthers 54 Knights 10

75' - The Panthers now on the attack. Right, left, then middle and Tamou offloads, with Fisher-Harris then throwing a bouncing pass to Kikau. He drops it into the hands of Watson who goes the other end, but he is then tracked down by Maloney, and he drops it. No advantage played, apparently, despite running a good 25 metres, and we are back for the Newcastle scrum. Panthers 54 Knights 10

I can't watch any more of this rubbish. If I wanted to watch park football I'd go to the local oval on the weekend. The Knights have let their fans down BIG time and they have been paid a fortune to do it! They should be forced to give this game's match payment to charity. Congrats Panthers fans. Commiserations long suffering Knights supporters.
