Round 1 continues this afternoon when the Sydney Roosters host the Manly Sea Eagles at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match from 5.30pm (AEDT).

The Roosters’ second week exit from the finals last year would have stung Trent Robinson’s team. They would have been counting the days to this game and the Sea Eagles are the ones with the unfortunate timing.

Luke Keary trained earlier in the week, after missing the Chooks’ trial game, so he seems certain to play in the halves. With Boyd Cordner out for at least half the year, Angus Crichton gets the job on the left edge.

Sitili Tupouniua will also slot into the back row, whilst Victor Radley and Sam Verrills will probably be rested for another week after recovering from long-term injuries.

If the Roosters are reasonably settled, the Sea Eagles are anything but. The loss of fullback Tom Trbojevic is a huge blow to the Sea Eagles, from both an attack and defence angle.

Much of the attack will now rest on the shoulders of Daly Cherry-Evans and Kieran Foran, back at Brookvale after stints with the Eels, Warriors and Bulldogs.

Josh Aloiai has the big shoes of Addin Fonua-Blake to fill in the front row, whilst Lachlan Croker has overcome injury to line up at hooker.

Prediction
The Roosters will be keen to erase last season’s finish and start the season off in positive fashion.

The first round is notoriously unpredictable but it is hard to see how Manly can get the win.

Sydney Roosters by 12.

Manly cannot win a Game with the kind of display it put on against the Roosters. Manly is headed for the wooden spoon if it continues to play Rugby League in that type of fashion. It has to realize that Rugby League is now played at a different level. Just look at how Penrith is playing, the game has changed. Manly has to lift, right now it is playing School boys park football. People like Brad Parker and Kelly has to lift their game. Manly has to go perform.

Ok I am a Roosters fan and what I saw delighted me despite the fact they were a bit sloppy at times. However, I did expect a lot more from Manly. The commentary kept on showing Tom Turbo in the coaches box and they would be dreaming if they think that his inclusion would have done much to change that result.

and they really lack a decent goal kicker missing 4 conversions so it could have been 54 to 4

So homophobia is alive and well on the Roar ( who obviously condone it). The worst insult you can direct toward a rugby team is to associate them with participants in the GLBTI community? Always the biggest cowards that resort to these kind of put-downs but it does collateral damage to those who identify as LGBTI.

Sorry Pickett, I couldn't resist that comment. Roosters looking good, but hopefully get exposed in round 3.

I did think this might happen what with the team selected by coach Hasler. That is basically same mob that finished last season so pathetically - same old, same old. I sense that Hasler's team selections are becoming more and more eccentric - sticking with several players who are just not up to standard and not able to blood any new talent. Players such as Boyle, Croker, Garrick, Gosiewski, Suli and possibly Parker would not make any other NRL side. Sironen too is on the slide and seems incapable of employing any ball skills and is slow. The team is a rabble at the present time and I have no confidence Hasler can steer them out of it.

Sorry but your comments are unacceptable. Homophobic bigotry is plain destructive.

So a homophobic comment is the ultimate insult against the Sea Eagles is it?

I’m not sure that any coach would’ve got that feckless rabble to perform tonight. Dessies greatest problem is resisting the urge to drop anyone. I dare bet hell pick an unchanged side on Tuesday including that terrible left side defence

No risk on me giving up on them mate.. but what i saw tonight was simply not acceptable. Too many excuses were given last year. To add to the frustration we have two key players in our cap right now that could make a difference. One decided to get in trouble at a church dance and the other decided that a foot race on the Corso was more important than the first four rounds.

How far above the radar? The chooks are a Kmart drone while the Panthers, Bunnies and Storm are jumbo jets at 30,000 feet.

You miss my point mate. I would blow up the bunker and go back to what we had since 1908. But this is better than reviewing every second try.

Sorry Jimmy & Eagle Jack Can't agree. If the onfield ref says try, that should be it. To have it overturned sets a precedent where we would be going down RU territory, where a bloke scores, ref says try, scores go up, gets updated on the Roar, conversion is about to happen and BANG! 'Excuse me Ben, I want to look at this again'...and then we wait for another 2-3 minutes and then try gets reversed, scores get changed again, Roar scores are updated and leaves everyone confused, teams walk back'.....sorry, NOT FOR ME! Besides, that 'call back' was incorrect. That was a try for all money. If the game had been decided by this try, then there would have been howls of protest. Lucky it was hidden due to the magnitude of the score. RL is a game played by imperfect humans, reffed by imperfect refs, played in front of imperfect fans, in imperfect stadiums, in impefect weather and overlooked by imperfect video refs. Human error will always occur. It adds to the beauty and theatre of the game. A pox on this ridiculous rule!!

I don’t play chess when I am watching a live NRL game AND posting on a ROAR Live call forum. I’m not THAT good at multitasking Pickett. Besides it sounds like you’ve been drinking Pickett. No doubt celebrating the chooks win over a Turbo less Sea Eagles side.
