Slipper has always leaked penalties ( in int footy) and AAA is average in the scrum. Weak props really need a strong body at hooker and big locks behind them. Neville would have made a difference in the scrum but not Swain.

Brumbies breathe sigh of relief after holding on against physical Drua pack as super sub saves the day

When you have weak props like Slipper or any other Aus prop (Tupou sometimes matches it with opposing prop) you do need very strong locks, not Frost or even Swain. Neville better but Skelton ideal.

Shute Sheild &Hospital Cup etc are great pathways that allow a player to develop and put forward their case for a big contract into SR. If they go directly overseas directly from these (state) comps, that shouldn’t precluded eligibility for WB’s. Pathways is about facilitating progression from one level of competion to the next for the ambitious and talented, right?

Why not tilt the favour of funding RU comps, toward internal state RU ( as mentioned) comps a little and the ‘cream will rise to the top’, as opposed to throwing $millions at a couple of players that havent even estabished their deservedness at a state comp (eg Shute Sheild) level. ? If a player does (perform), offer that player an ‘incentive contract’ that is the pathway to SR.

Following this I’d suggest that talent scouts at school-boy rugby matches, elucidate the pathways from school-boy to state comp (eg Shute Sheild) and from there to O/S or SR.

I think SR is a great comp and I’d love to see it ramp up. Look at the Rugby talent we have in the Pacific (and rim). i’d personally hate to see any team removed right now. I’m convinced there is a future in an expanded Pacific comp ( Japan and South America etc) and why not a relegation comp?

Jorgensen set to be left out for Hurricanes as Schmidt drops in at Tahs training

If Lonergan who has a good kicking game is picked at 9, then Lolesiou isn’t needed so much? However, a 10 who can run at the line then pass, make breaks and make tackles, like CG, would be a more complementary 10. Lolesiou looks good in a winning team behind a forward pack making good yards and a team scoring tries which he can then convert. Is that enough for a WB jersey? Having said that, if NL played inside a play-making 12 like Foketi or Paisami then that’s a better fit and yes it would be nice to see a high percentage of tries converted.

Yep. Wright was doing a lot of important work at the ruck. I can’t fit both him and Wilson into a WB pack. Valentini as an 8 would be complemented by Wright at 6. However Valentini at 6 and Wilson at 8 would be far less potent. Kiss hasn’t been using Wright as a lineout option or not much that I can see, so that is a deficit when considering him as a 6 for WB’s.

Who knows where MN’s head is at right now. Played better last game or two. I think he’s an asset to have under the high ball. Vunivalu is a much more rounded rugby player under Kiss and no longer a liability. Keep your eye on him. There’s also young Lancaster at Rebs to keep at eye on. Dylan Pietch has been more than reasonable as well. Let’s see how Ryan is going over next couple of months?

'Run-on debut like no other': Junior Wallabies flyer announces himself to the world after stunning hat-trick

They absolutely should. Do you see what he does in general play( assisting in rucks etc). His smarts are improving so stick with him.

Im a Werchon fan but those box kicks were so ill advised. Reds have made similar mistakes in past years giving possession back to opposition near the end of the game. Harry is serviceable at Super level but easily put to ground in contact ( « ragdollesd » as some Reds used to say about Hooper or Hanigan). Wright is the same, great team player, but not a top level talent.

'Heartbreaking': Blues sink Reds with post-siren try after rising star scores epic hat-trick

I assume sarcasm. It’s impossible to have watched the game and make that comment. Vunivalu assisted in rucks, defence generally and scored tries that other weaker bodied reds could not have made. In fact he is the form Reds player along with Ryan Smith. I’m liking the reds bench props a lot and with Faessler and Nasser, Reda don’t need to fret about no.2.

Wow, how good was that? A few observations. Werchom lost it for the Reds. Dumb box kicks in their own half, pass too far in front. Apart from that he looks better than McDermott. Harry Wilson busy but no ability to bend the line or dominate a tackle. Reds need a stronger 8. Liam Wright also not a strong enough body or presence. Loved the attitude of the Reds. Fantastic scrambling defence, didn’t give up, just don’t have sufficient physical power or rugby smarts.

DC came in with the intent to build the culture. Perhaps he has done that in some ways. I don’t see it though .

The Tahs don’t seem to play in sync or for each other or for their fans. They don’t have mongrel or great tenacity in my view. They’re undeserving of the support of their fans. No wonder so few turn up to matches. Tahs certainly don’t deserve financial support from RA. Why is that warranted ?

However, I’d like to see a whole different NSW based SR team set up totally uncoupled from RA and the Waratahs old boys. No where near Moore Park.

Rugby Australia kicks off review into Waratahs as pressure mounts on Coleman ahead of Brumbies clash

He took the Aus U20’s to runners up in U20 World Cup and winners of Oceania U20 Cup. In 2022 Gilmore coached Aus A to 2nd in Pacific Nations Cup. He hasn’t been OS. I don’t hold his credentials in high regard next to other more experienced coaches but I’d like to think that the Aus A coach can be somewhat mentored by the WB’s coach.

Good point and baffling as he’s had a couple of good results with Aus A.

Yeah I think you’ve described most likely outcome LRO. I really hope he mentors Les Kiss and Jason Gilmore and that Kiss takes over at some point. If not Kiss then Gilmore.

JS has mentioned his son’s disability and how he factors that into his decisions. That’s why I wonder if he’ll only initially commit for 2 years and see how his family handles things. However maybe RA wasn’t ready to pay a 4 yr contract in case things weren’t going well at the two year mark? Maybe JS just see’s himself as building a new environment and team then handing over to a favoured mentee like Kiss? I’m just speculating.

'It can be something great': Schmidt turns to 'scrum doctor' as next step in Wallabies rebuild

This is great news. I cannot help wondering if Schmidt will mentor Kiss into the future WB head coach role, if he (Schmidt) relinquishes it after two years. Now for a lineout coach who hopefully also shows the hookers how to throw! Is there a kicking coach out there for CG and BD?

'It can be something great': Schmidt turns to 'scrum doctor' as next step in Wallabies rebuild

From what I see Gordon does steer the side around pretty well and sets up momentum for his backline with his running and passing. However he sometimes sabotages Rebs momentum with botched kicks for touch or from in-goal. The kick into the approaching player showed lack of experience as he didn’t look up to see who was running at him. Edmed throws to the touchline a little too often and CG really needs to spend all his time at training with a kicking tutor.

'Something's not working': Tahs' Good Friday turns into a nightmare as Rebels recruit Daugunu seals upset win

Stats even or slightly favoured the Tahs except penalties. 18 against Tahs. WTF? Only 4 against Rebs. That’s on the coach as well as players.

I thought the last two tries against Tahs were on the replacement halves. They’re supposed to direct their players to where defence is needed. Blindside!!!

'Best place for me': Wallaby-in-waiting Jorgensen commits to Aussie rugby in boost ahead of Lions series

Fair enough Peter, if you know that the contracts for Kellaway and Jock ( JC), Petaia etc who compete for the same positions, pay more ( than MJ).

In any case it’s a hell of an outlay to test our credulity after the massive bucks sent Suallii’s way don’t you think? My principle point was about the amount of money spent on a player who hasn’t ( barely) played at highest level yet.

'Best place for me': Wallaby-in-waiting Jorgensen commits to Aussie rugby in boost ahead of Lions series

This is unfortunate. If Jorgensen was so motivated to play Lions tour and home World Cup he would accept less. He’s only 19 yrs old FFS.

Has he (MJ) already, by his deeds, pushed his worth beyond that of Campbell, Kellaway, Petaia etc, as a FB who deserves more pay?

Very risky strategy by RA to outlay these bucks along side the contract with Suaali’i. Their two highest paid players untested at highest level rugby. Does RA need Jorgensen as insurance against a Suaali’i flop or desertion back to NRL?

In any case good luck to the young lad and I hope he goes well.

I like this weeks Red’s team. However their inside channel is going to be challenged by Brumby’s big bodies. After taking their foot off the gas against the Force the Reds, at home ground, will be pumped. Kiss might decide that it’s time to keep pushing the Brumbies around the park and out of their formulaic patterns.

Super Rugby teams week six: Foketi back after horror injury, Suli benched, Sam Carter set for debut, DMac rested

Yeah I get that. HJH is on the bench for a reason ( he’s consistently good without being top-class) ) and the Englishman has experience and size. The Tahs bench hooker (Heaven) is a small guy so I understand your concern. TT might have a field day….if the Tahs give away too many penalties in their half.

Tahs look strong. Dead keen to see how young Will Harrison goes and the prop, Tom Ross.

Neither Brumbies nor Reds both have strong front rows but each have good locks and great loose forwards. Brumbies have a stronger bench which may tip the odds in their favour. Really looking forward to Brums v Reds.

Jones initially denied having discussions about the head coaching role following Tom Decent having said there was a zoom meeting which was an interview for that job. Jones later says that that zoom call was with a recruitment agency to discuss his previous experience in the job, which would help the JRFU frame their search for Jamie Joseph’s successor.

“The first interview I had with Japan was in December and that’s the only interview I’ve had.”

No-one has presented evidence that contradicts Jone’s account.

I think it’s reasonable to assert that Jones zoom call with the recruitment agency didn’t remove him from the frame for a possible future interview for the coaching job.

The first interview directly with JRU was in December.

Remember, the SMH said Jones was interviewing for the job back at end Aug 23. Since then almost everyone has called Jones a liar for denying that.

I think the mischief done by the SMH was in characterising the zoom call as a job interview.

I also think that if Jones had reason to suspect that his position with RA wasn’t secure, in spite of his stated commitment, that he was entitled to keep his options open for other future coaching positions. It is a common enough train of events for many coaches.

So, referring back to this article’s author’s statement that (the daily news cycle) «does not guarantee that the source of information is true…. », unfortunately many on the Roar accepted a journalists first report as ‘true’ and subsequently decided Jones was a liar. I think that Jones was presumed by many to be guilty based on a journalist’s heresay report, and that that is not just.
