He shouldn’t be but I noticed a story about how it has stalled talks Manly renewing his contract which were already underway. Have Manly forgotten so soon about all the fanfare surrounding Dessie’s return only a couple of years ago?

Calm down, you've played one game

I was expecting at least one of the talking points would have been about that dramatic second try to Ryan Papenhuyzen. The one where he lost the ball during the put down as it simultaneously went dead in goal in the right corner. The one that was awarded instantly and didn’t warrant even one reverse angle replay. Unlike pretty much every other try this round. “Nothing to see here!” LOL
Oh and cheers Scott for recycling my “There’s something about Mary” comment from a recent post. Great minds obviously think alike. 👍

Eight talking points from NRL Round 1

Teddy is way in front eels47. I was asking “mighty” where you were during the Live call. I thought you boys usually appear in groups of 3? 😁

Five sneaky underrated subplots from round 1 of the NRL

I wasn’t playing mate (luckily for the Storm) but “Little Papy” was phenomenal. I especially liked his second try (No Try) in the right corner that was awarded instantly and didn’t warrant even one reverse angle replay. Unlike pretty much every other try this round. “Nothing to see here!” LOL

Not me jimmmy. Payten is a keeper. I’ve also been saying “calm down, it’s only round 1”. You can’t start writing teams off until at least round 2. 😁

I was trying to lift your spirits Hard Yards. What is the norm these days anyway? The rules change every other week which shifts the momentum like the ebb and flow of the tide on Manly beach affecting the results of games in the process. Nothing is absolute like it was in the old days. Form is not set in stone. As the saying goes; “Past performance is no guarantee of future results”. There are far too many variables in the game now. All that a team needs is a few back-to-back repeat sets, and they can look like a champion side when fatigue brought on by the breakneck speed of the game often leaves a defensive team gassed and legless.

The constant rule changes, the inconsistency of rulings and the uncertainty of possession after a successful defensive set of 6 tackles is no longer guaranteed. The speed of the game largely due to repeat sets of six and an increase in second phase play push players to their limits, dramatically increasing fatigue and giving any team a chance if they are able to seize the opportunity. Carpe diem Hard Yards, seize the day!

Possession has always been a key factor in Rugby League but today even more so. Teams that can defend without giving away repeat sets of six and then control the ball by eliminating errors while speeding up their play the ball are already halfway to victory. Manly need to get their defence and ball control in order and build from there. Fingers crossed it will take them at least one more week to figure out how to achieve that though. 😁

Des Hasler won't rush changes

2020 round 15, Souths 56 vs Manly 16. 😁 👍

Des Hasler won't rush changes

Take it easy Hard Yards. Give Dessie and the boys the week off to get over this momentary aberration and start preparing for round 3 and build from there. 😁 👍

“I don’t think it takes much for one side to really dominate.” That’s the thing about the new rules and the faster games Paul. The scoreline can blow out very easily at the back end of games with a flood of possession and fatigue have an increasing influence on the game. I would go so far as to say the teams that are most successful at adapting to this new style and getting on a roll depend on it.

Des Hasler won't rush changes

Agreed. You can’t expect to get paid a million dollars a season to only play on one side of possession.

Todd Payten fumes after thrashing

Just like Souths when they came back from exile jimmmy, a team struggling to sign big names needs a good coach and a few influential marquee players who can turn the tide of perception for any would be new recruits. The Cowboys have Todd Payten which is a solid start, but they need a player of the quality of Thurston, Inglis, Tedesco and yes, Cam Smith to get other players keen to join the club, especially given the Cowboy’s extreme geographical isolation. Morgan, JT13 and Holmes together clearly aren’t enough of an attraction to entice players so far north in North Korea. 😁

Someone explain to me why when a defender raises an elbow to the head of a player they get a 4 – 6 week suspension but if JWH raises his forearm and elbow late to the head or throat of a player he should be allowed to do this time and time and time again? Is that any less dangerous? At some point the judiciary has to stop adjudicating based on the jerseys a player wears and show a little backbone and consistency before someone gets badly hurt!

Even without Turbo, Fornua-Blake and Thompson Manly should have been able to aim up better than that. I feel sorry for Jake T. this year having to work even harder to overcome the loss of AFB and seeing players drop off tackles all around him must be soul-destroying for him. Jake really came up with some bone rattlers yesterday while, for the most part, Croker, Foran and the rest of Manly’s left-edge defence were clutching at thin air. If Manly suffer a similar result to the Bunnies next week I expect Foran to get the hook and young Schuster to be given another opportunity. Also, I believe Morgan Harper should replace Brad Parker who also had a shocker.
Like I said before the game, a centre moved to 5/8 filling at FB, a HB playing hooker/dummy half and Foran struggling for form and confidence thrown into the halves was always a recipe for disaster. Add to that both Fornua-Blake and Thompson and Turbo all missing from last year’s side against the Roosters in round 1, it was inevitable. That’s why on NRL.com tipping I tipped the Roosters by 20+.

I already believed that Todd Payten was one of the best coaches in the NRL but that first press conference sealed the deal. Payten has an astute football brain and can articulate his ideas well. I can see how he helped the Warriors to focus on the task at hand last year amidst a sea of distractions. Toddie should be applauded for his concern for players welfare and burnout and in his expectations for senior players and holding them to a higher standard and challenging them to lead by example. At the end of the day, just like Madge, being a great coach is one thing, but it comes back to a team’s roster. IMO the Tigers and the Cowboys don’t have that, especially in key positions unlike the Panthers, Rabbitohs, Storm, Raiders and Roosters. I hold back on including the Eels (even though I tipped them to finish 5th) because I feel Mitchell Moses may prove to be their Achilles heel and if he falters he will drag Dylan Brown with him. I can’t fault Gutherson or Mahoney though but without halves they are cut off at the knees.

Well that’s a relief! Good work Dessie. Save those changes for round 3. 👍

I can only hope mate. But then who could I engage in banter with? 😁

Can Brad Arthur’s Eels win the premiership?

Souvalis? Yeah, he set me straight on that already. The Sporacle is a Panther, yes? It’s hard to keep track sometimes jimmmy.

I was sorry to see little Siro go. He was improving. Host is a hard worker but less mobile. Bayley Sironen can play 5/8 he has great skills and soft hands. Somehow that sounds wrong! 😛

I think I can relate to jimmmy’s comment above…

“It sure sucks the life out of me.”

I think I’d rather have a colonoscopy than get caught in a “Groundhog Day” argument with you TB. My head hurts!

I wish they had that in place for the 2 hour long Meaghan Markle, Prince Harry Oprah interview my wife forced me to sit through. Watching highlights of the Broncos 2020 season would have been far more amusing. 😂 😂 😂

“While you are at the lawyers, see if you have a case of 17 ladies impersonating the NSW team.”

Nat have the Broncos been wearing Blues jerseys AGAIN? Still, I think they deserve a little respect for their effort last night despite being reigning wooden spoon champs! 😂 😂 😂

Fair enough Paul. But you can hardly extend that judgement to the club that eliminated the Eels from the 2020 competition after beating them 38-0 in round 16 and finished with an aggregate score against the Eels of 76-24. 😁 👍

Can Brad Arthur’s Eels win the premiership?

“Arrow, Murray, Walker, Mitchell, Reynolds and Cook?”
All Origin or former Origin players. Next question. Btw NONE of those players are on $1 M plus like Tedesco, Cronk and Crichton were when the chooks won their premierships with Cordner on $850K, Keary… tricky Sporacle! You almost got me to recite my little chicken list.

Can Brad Arthur’s Eels win the premiership?

I don’t think that is the case this year, as the crooks chooks no longer have 3 “Million dollar men” under their salary cap (Tedesco, Cronk and Crichton) andca $850K player who may yet end up being medically retired this year (Cordner).

It was certainly the case in 2013 – 2014 and 2018 – 2019. That’s why those premierships don’t count! 😁 👍
