Round 20 of the NRL kicks off with the Wests Tigers taking on the North Queensland Cowboys at Leichhardt Oval. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:50pm (AEST).

This round is chock full of matches that will have a large impact on the makeup of the top eight. This match is one of them, with the winner keeping their hopes alive and the loser getting close to booking September holidays.

The Tigers were impressive last week, coming back from a large deficit to beat the Knights in Newcastle. Veterans Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah had big games and, behind a hard-working pack, they find themselves still in contention in the log jam on 18 points.

Their run home is not the hardest, but they need to win their home games to have hopes of a rare semi-final appearance.

The Cowboys are definitely at the last chance saloon, with a mini-revival stopped in its tracks by back-to-back losses to the Rabbitohs and Sharks.

They led 14-4 against the Sharks last Thursday night but couldn’t hold on when it mattered. While the forward pack remains strong, the young backline let in a couple of tries late.

In a big in for the Cowboys, Michael Morgan returns after a three-week break due to concussion. John Asiata returns to the bench, while Corey Jensen goes back to the reserves.

Prediction
Both teams will be desperate tonight, so we can look forward to a great game.

At Bankwest or Campbelltown, this would be a toss of the coin job for me. But the Tigers seem to save their best for Leichhardt Oval and I think that will prove the difference.

It will be close-run, but I think the Tigers will get home.

You know Rob there is no excuse not to run with Cotter. There is no excuse not to run GGM. There is no excuse not to run Jensen. There is no excuse not to completely rejig our game plan. Of course it may not work but we must have a go. Our season is over . We get 6 games to try a few new things for next year . Surely Green must recognise this as well.

Jimmmy, Green has to go. The team needs a fresh face and new ideas. He dropped Feldt in preference for Wright because he didn’t rate Feldt. Sorry but Feldt is a special finisher. If not for injuries and Wright getting a peptide (Sharks) suspensions Feldt would probably not be winning the GF. Now he doesn’t rate GGM and gets Kahu? Wtf he picks Bowen over Tuala. Tuala was learning. Granville was in career best form in 2015 but Green was replacing him with Thompson, Kostijason, Cameron King. Now Granville is playing ordinary and he has a good 20yd, 97kg hooker carving it up in ISC? What good is Scott, Bolton, Cooper, still racking up games doing. Cam Murray is 21 and now in his 3rd season with 50 games under his belt. Guess what Cotter is the same size and a try scoring dummy half played 1 game. Over 3 seasons GGM has played 10 games scored 6 tries and won 70%. Bowen 36 games 10 tries won 41%. I repeat WTF

Steveng I agree with some of that. Firstly we have had a red hot go in the last month for little reward. You guys beat us ( deservedly) but we really put in and made you fight for it. We did the same with Manly and beat the Roosters. But last night we had no intent or hardness at all. We ran and defended limply. Simply not good enough from so many players. As for Clifford, he is young and has a long way to go but I just don’t see the required level of talent. I saw one game from Dearden from the Broncs, one game from Croft for the Storm and I knew both were first grade 7s. I haven’t seen that from Clifford. ( although I did miss the Roosters game). I love being wrong about Cowboys players. I was wrong about Coote who helped us win a GF and I hope I am wrong about Clifford as well. As for the coach , you are spot on . Either he changes tack completely ( which would be very hard for him to do) or we get someone else.

Spot on BA, its soooo frustrating to see the inconsistencies of these obstruction rules!!! Shame on the NRL to allow this to happen week in and week out! The Feldt try was 100% a try!

I don’t agree ‘jimmmy’, to me Clifford (especially last night) was too reliant on Morgan (who had a shocker) and shouldn’t have played! There were allot of the Cows that let the side down last night e.g. Hess, Granville who also had a shocker. Clifford looked frustrated to me, he relied on Morgan too much and they were both getting in each other’s way, especially with their kicking game, the Cows were bunched the whole game and doing nothing, no attack, no pattern to their plays, just one up, their defence was abysmal. I know that the Tigers had most of the posetion but, the Cows were always dropping the ball and giving cheap posetion away and hardly completed any sets. To me, Clifford was having a go, the kid can’t do it all on his own, he’s got potential but, he can’t do anything, when Morgan and the others are so abysmal and not having a go. Don’t forget that the Cows had that fist try disallowed by Feldt (which was a shocker and was the turning point for me) and then, Feldt bombed that other certain try, hence the Cows could have had 3 tries, if all went the Cows way in that second half, they could have been at least 12 point to the Tigers 16 (as Clifford wouldn’t of kicked those conversions, from the sideline) to make it 18 to 16 to the Cows. To me, the Cows are badly coached and Green has to go, his use by date is up, they are doing allot of good things but and by gee, they do allot of bad things and lose intensity, especially in the second half this year, which was the reverse last year. All in all a coaching change has to happen, the Cows should seriously consider either Griffin, Tooves or a similar experienced coach, which has to be done asap in my opinion!

Absolutely TB, the development of young players at the Cows has been poor. The crux is ‘Have we picked the wrong players to develop or are we going about it all wrong’. Not easy to answer. Hess has definitely regressed ,from a dominant ball runner to an also ran. His problem is attitude. Imo he is dropped until he changes. I don’t think coaching is his issue. Clifford ,I think maybe is just not up to it. I have withheld judgement on him until now but he has not improved one bit in the last 10 games. Now I concede his issue could be poor coaching but even with that caveat I don’t see the underlying talent to bring out . I hope I’m wrong. Centres ? We have none atm and none of any great quality even if everyone is fit. The pluses are I think Drinkwater has ability and he could be a long term No 1. Also Dunn who is injured has shown me enough to think he is a keeper. My gut feeling are our recruiting and retention policy sucks. We need a rebuild, new centres , new half , new hooker and two or three new young forwards. It’s going to be a lean few years for us but hey I remember the early days.

Hard to disagree... But than he does one or two things per game where you hink, jeez this kid can play. Very frustrating. I think the Cows need to have a good look at refreshing roster and coaching staff. I just think the whole team is stale! I hope now semi finals are gone Green gives the side permission to have a crack and play some unstructured footy... They might surprise themselves!

And of course there is Gideon Gela-Mosby who granted may need an attitude adjustment, but you would think a good coach would have sorted him out or moved him on by now.

2015 Granville and today’s are chalk and cheese...

Throw in Mitch Dunn, who looked like he could be anything and has been nothing. Even Opacic was probably never going to be a rep footballer, but he looks like he has literally started playing the game last week. Kahu was a complete bust and Granville has steadily gone backwards.

On reflection on last night’s game, are Cowboys fans concerned at the number and the way so many players seem to be going backwards? Coen Hess was a wrecking ball two years ago. Now he’s the biggest ‘looks like Tarzan plays like Jane’ in the comp. Clifford has gone backwards in 12 months and looks a plodder. Morgan is struggling to recapture 2017 form. I thought Corey Jensen was an up and coming young forward with potential a couple of seasons ago. It seems like it’s really hard for young players to get a gig under Green but it’s not great for their careers when they do.

Cowboys were horrific. The only bright spot for them was Drinkwater. He has vision with his passing while Clifford is blinkered by comparison.

It would be good to see your patience and good sportsmanship rewarded more often mate. Bad luck. Better luck next year and here's to a new coach. Cheers!
