Dunno if Bateman had any added reason to show additional respect to the game and the NRL all things and privileges of the week considered..

Oh I'm sure there's a bit of pressure on the face - and not unknown to Smith from where he's looking - but putting it into some perspective here, he's hardly ripping the ear off. Worse happens many other tackles that are let run.

I wonder if Bateman got the same letter, or maybe the Telegraph didn't extract a still out of the Fox coverage...

Pretty sure the NRL would have relied solely on the Daily Telegraphs picture before serving Cameron with a letter of concern..

he's got the jersey but is definitely putting most of his pressure on the head not the jersey

Probably looked worse than what it was after multiple views - but I can understand why the ref penalised him on one viewing. It looked pretty bad and I can understand why Simonsson threw him away. Just another dubious incident of many that involves Cameron Smith. And yes I will be cheering on Jacky Boi for the rest of the season. He is having a wonderful year.

Yeah... you would want to make sure that house you live in as a Raiders fan isn't made of glass. This was penalty sufficient and barely that. Plenty of players cop something in the face on the ground - some get penalised some get missed and I can guarantee you that there have been Storm players who have done worse to a players head this year and there have been Raiders players who have done worse. He has a grip on his jersey. He is wrestling him on the ground. Pretty normal in the course of a game. But you can remember him however you like. Just keeping cheering for Jack Whighton I guess..

Yep, when a media group that has multiple videos embedded in each article decides specicically to use still to prove a point you know there's something up. Anyone with any experience in photography knows how unreliable perspective is in a single shot.

If we're gonna start binning players for laughing at a decision clubs better start brushing up on their 9's drills. And I guess Blake Green must be in some serious trouble as well....

Watch the tackle Geoff, not just the still pictures. He grabs the jersey in the tackle – it’s quite clear – at the shoulder and behind the left ear and pulls the player down with it which is why his hand is near the ear. You can clearly see the jersey stretched from the time he grabs it to when Simonsson is near the ground and Smith’s hand is near his ear. His grip doesn’t change and it too tight for an ear to be in there. He might grind the ear with his hand while he’s pulling the jersey but there ain’t no ear in there (see Fox sport’s pic, he would have to have a rabbit ear). PS.. had the optics checked recently, all good .

Have another look DPS - wasn't aware that jerseys covered the ears these days - may have to get the glasses prescription increased!

LOL.. I have glasses and used them. Smith has a grip on the jersey. Simonsson may have copped an ear burn and it might be tacky for Smith to 'rub it in' with his knuckles, but he's gripping the jersey.

Agree DP. Very selective use of still shots from the video makes it look like he is holding his ear when it is actually the jersey and he is using the collar to hold him down. Unusual for Kent and the Daily Telegraph to do a negative beat up on the NRL.

I think any grappling or hands around the head or next should be penalised out of the game. I'd have also binned Smith for laughing at the explanation, if I was in Cummins' position.

Some of you blokes need glasses - its obvious Smith is trying to squash Simonsson's head with his fist so he can't get a quick play the ball - and understandable that when Bailey stands up and throws Smith to the ground. Must be a new Storm squashing the melon hold. Simonsson showed pretty good control to walk away. If Smith had done it to Joe Tapine I think he may have needed a nose reconstruction. Lets hope this new tactic doesn't get copied by other teams. Unfortunately Smith will be remembered as about three quarters football genius and one quarter grub.

This is a bit of a storm in a teacup really. He wasn't rubbing him, or gouging him. His hand was near his face sure, it looked like a 50/50 penalty to me, would have been happy with the call either way. I guess they are really cracking down on anything near the face now, let's see how long that goes on for. I don't think this incident deserves this kind of attention.

Not surprising. Cam Smith has always been a grub and he just gets grubbier the more pressure his team is under

I'm not the biggest fan of Cam Smith, but to me, he's clearly got the jersey, not the ear. A bit of a beat up here?
