Punishing high contact isn't the issue for me. Rugby League should have been enforcing these rules and adhering to concussion protocols for years now. The problem comes when the NRL introduces a swathe of rules designed to speed up / open up the game. Set restarts, 7 tackle sets from restarts are leading to a massive increase in player fatigue, that leads to poor decisions and execution on the field resulting in high contact and concussions from poor technique under stress.
The set restart is a great idea if applied in the right areas of the field. At present a set restart on the 10 metre line tackle two, then another on the 40 tackle three is seeing sides defend ten tackles in a set and absolutely gassing them. Little wonder a desperate defender hangs out an arm and catches someone or gets their head in the wrong spot and gets wiped out by an attacking player's hip.
I think they were embarrassed by the Drew Hutchison incident last week and came out all guns blazing. That's cool but if you want to do something about high contact and accidental concussions you need to accept some of your rule changes are playing a significant role.
Most Manly fans aren't keen on the Fultons either but the younger ones appear to be doing a stellar job at the club. Personally I don't care who's popular or not, it's a woeful guide.
Something I would find interesting for the stat gurus out there. How many people have failed a HIA from a high tackle compared to a HIA from making a tackle?
Just because he got the game on track is a feather in his cap. Let's say I'm not an admirer. Same as Morrison he's doing a good job but not a lot of people like him.
I'm with you 100 percent. Some people don't like it all yet they bring up the ' why wasn't it done earlier ' bs. Well if it was done earlier the weekend would have been the same .
You could use the same criticism at any time during the last 10 years.
The thing is it had to start and it can't stop.
It's a walk in the park compared to Cooper getting 15 months and Boyd 12 months. No doubt their were plenty of cave men having a good whine back then as well but it didn't exactly cause the game any harm , it was the reverse.
Nothing V'landys does will please most of his critics.
The great mob were demanding he cancelled last season. Imagine the critics if he actually followed that advice? The AFL gets a season to attract new fans and the NRL goes broke, gee that would be clever.
Tedesco's concussion in round 7 (roosters v dragons) probably triggered it, and Robbo complained, by Round 9. Drew Hutchison lost a few ribs and a lung, and Robbo complained, so by round 10 V'Landys acted. Good on him, swift and firm, no BS. What was the alternative, let the season run with a weekly injury list ballooning because of illegal play and has been poorly or lightly officiated in rounds 1-9? I say good on PVL., he's got the b*lls that Beattie and Greenberg could only ever dream of.
Yep, Dragons, Dogs and Sharks will be made the scapegoats or made examples, one thing for sure, the roosters, storm and panthers are protected species. Kafusi, JWH, Radley, NAS, Kikau et al can run amok without caution.
The fact that nothing was done in the preceding 9 weeks is an indictment on the way the game is being run. The East's / Parramatta was probably the straw that broke the Camel's back. It's okay for V'Landys to come out and be tough about it is but nothing has been done leading up to it. He's hanging his hat on the fact that he was able to restart the game during COVID. The fact is COVID is still there so let's not get too carried away. Sure he's a good administrator but he has a lot to learn about the game. Any administrator worth his salt would try to fix these problems but he likes to take the kudo's . His timing is perfect.
Can't agree mate. Forceful contact to the head took Paps out of the game. The 18th man helps rotation but it doesn't replace a Churchill medalist FB. Lesser high shots got 10mins and deserved that. Fuimaono was higher and harder and so is the punishment.
Using Moose as the example of 2 offences in the 1st half. What if NAS takes out Dufty and Hunt from the game yet plays all of the 2nd half. The contest is over and next week gets to benefit from NAS being suspended. Saints may get Hunt and Dufty back next week, maybe.
Gotta say, I think it was more of an issue for those watching on TV. The crowd were getting behind it. Yes there was some over zealous calls but don't we get those every week. It would have to be a worse spectacle if Riki, Papa, Ese'ese and co stayed on the field during the games' biggest spectacle.

OK, we'll have to disagree. I still think Pap fell into the tackle so it was less than a send off.
