I’m a chooks supporter and it’s hard to believe the Mam would have misheard Leniu. Don’t know what the punishment should be, a decent fine from the NRL plus a suspension anywhere in the 6 to 12 weeks category seems reasonable. Will be bitterly disappointed if the Roosters don’t have him making a public apology if found guilty or not.

The guy is clearly as dumb as a bag of hammers and has significant issues controlling himself. It was evident at the Panthers, and nothing has changed at this point. Assuming he was aware of what he actually said on the field his car crash post-match interviews show a guy with no real understanding of what he has just done. Not to put the onus on Mam but Leniu needs to understand how he has made Mam feel. You just can’t go around being that lazy with your language and expect not to face serious consequences.

Hang in there Ezra, you don’t deserve that rubbish.

‘Fun and games, banter’: Leniu response to racial allegation beggars belief as ‘heat of the battle’ mentality harms NRL yet again

If not for Phillips’ contributions the margin would have been much greater. Spare me.

The English press are amazing. When you have won 7 of the last 30 Tests and last won a Test on Australian soil 12 years ago it’s nice to celebrate your “wins”.

You can admit it now - if Stuart Broad was an Aussie, he'd be your favourite player

Yeah, nah. Great bowler, but ultimately a private school smart arse who was never at risk of being punched in the mouth and has acted accordingly. Quintessential English cricketer.

You can admit it now - if Stuart Broad was an Aussie, he'd be your favourite player

I have the utmost respect for Stuart Broad as a bowler, a modern day great blessed with enormous talent and drive. That said he has always come across as a childish banter merchant with a massive ego. He plays the game like he is starring in his own movie, over the top reactions, celbrappeals, lingering wry smiles at the batsmen, regularly at the centre of drama and always acutely aware of where the cameras are. His retirement announcement was completely on brand. A golden opportunity to make it all about Stuart.
There was something incredibly arrogant about the timing of his announcement. Day 3, Australia set 400, a forecast of grey skies. Broad envisioned himself, wheeling away to point after nicking Warner off for 7 and a procession of Australian wickets before taking a trip around the Oval on the back of a convertible Land Rover waving victoriously to an adoring crowd. It’s in keeping with the English attitude this series that Australia is a merely an observer to the greater Bazball performance.
Imagine proclaiming to your opponent “we don’t think you can win so we’re just going to plan a party you can watch but you aren’t invited to”. This could yet be the finest Stokes /McCullum tactical masterstroke of the series. 250 is still a bit to get on day 5 and England probably still be favourite to make it 2-2 but should Australia manage to run down 384 the hubris around Broad’s staged retirement will go close to a man of the match effort. Would be great to see.

They couldn't... could they? Khawaja-Warner century stand on rained-out fourth day gives Aussies a chance

Yep, completely Warner’s fault Head has twice got himself out in the 70s and Marus and Smith were out to Ali at Headingley. Smith and Marnus are well versed in going out at 2 for bugger all, that’s a big part of the job description batting 3 and 4.

Are the Australian selectors sabotaging the fifth Test by picking David Warner?

I will afford you a courtesy you wouldn’t give me, that being a polite reply.

Before Manchester Marnus had scores of 0, 13, 47, 30, 21, 33. Smith without his Lord’s ton is 16,6 34, 22, 2, 41 and 17. Head has 3 half centuries, to go with a 39 and 48. I reckon if you ask any of them if they think they have capitalized on the opportunities this series they would all say no. It’s been a substandard tour for the top 5 except Khawaja in my opinion. Completely agree that Old Trafford is a loss without Marnus scoring 111, Warner and Khawaja don’t get through 29 overs under gloomy skies 1st dig at Lord’s we probably don’t win there.

Not sure what was so jarring about my opening paragraph but sorry for upsetting you and making you think so little of me and my knowledge of cricket.

When Warner retires, I would probably give Renshaw or Harris first crack. I hope Bancroft is considered as I still think he has something to offer. If Pucovski is ever right, I would love to see him play. Bryce Street and Henry Hunt are other guys who look like they might have the game for test cricket.

Hope things work out for you Nick.

Some of this rings true when you are talking about a 14 test opener averaging 25.29. Marcus Harris for example. Warner is a 100+ test opener with 45 average and is probably the best all format opener of the last 10 years. He has been an excellent servant to Australian cricket and has enough credit in the bank to deserve a crack at ticking this one off his list.

Leeds aside he has been pretty good for mine. Conditions have been tough and I would be surprised if 5 of his 8 knocks haven’t been under grey skies and floodlights. His 2nd innings partnership with Uzzie at Edgbaston was invaluable. He was excellent 1st innings at Lord’s in very difficult conditions and it was the best 76 ball 25 I’ve seen under pressure* in the 2nd dig. He, like everyone else, looked good 1st dig in Manchester before giving it away and soaking up 9 overs of the new ball in the second innings shouldn’t be classed as a failure.

England is a hell of a tough place to bat for openers, Warner especially so, but it seems unfair to single him out on this tour. Crawley’s tinny, 51 false stroke, 189 is the only thing that stops him averaging 28 this series. Duckett the same. The one thing Warner hasn’t done is convert one of his 5 starts but Marnus, Head and Smith have all been guilty of that. Fingers crossed he get a score the The Oval and helps Australia to a 3-1 win.

The argument to move on from Warner is a strong one but I’m willing to see him get another chance or two to succeed.

The Liebke Fourth Ashes Test report card: 'Another absolutely thumping moral victory for England'

Normally wouldn’t crow about this but there is a definite sense of karma being dished up here.

Generous lashings of arrogance and hubris from England players were on display in the lead up to the first test. “Nobody can go with us”, “the last series was void” and similar sentiments were flowing from a carefully curated ECB media blitz. After Edgbaston there was little acknowledgement from the English cricket team and media about Australia’s performance in tough conditions and a historic run chase. The talk was how it “felt like a win”, “we’ll win at Lord’s by 150”.

Then Lord’s, England in control, Lyon blows a calf, England fall in a heap, the Bairstow stumping and all hell breaks loose. England barely acknowledge of Smith’s century, Khawaja’s gritty 3rd inning 70 odd. There is little scrutiny of England losing 5 for 32 when bossing the game, Bairstow dropping 3 chances and conceding 27 byes. The focus is on Australia being cheats and an offensive “spirit of the game” argument. England “feel” like they’re 2-0 up.

Australia was ordinary for two days at Old Trafford but the partnership between Labuschagne and Marsh on Saturday was massive and a more than a little unexpected. 30 overs in tough conditions but they held England at bay and more importantly Marnus looks to be back just in time for The Oval. Stokes will get a few questions about the declaration which will be batted away like any scrutiny so far in this series. Bairstow stranded on 99* and England being 10-15 overs short of putting Australia under real pressure on Saturday will always be funny to me.

England have won 4 tosses on the bounce, Australia lost Lyon two and half bowling innings into the series, England have had Australia batting under grey skies and floodlights for longer than they have in the sun. 2-1 down isn’t great returns. Cummins’ captaincy has been poor at times, Australia’s bowling occasionally brain dead and their batting never quite clicking. The atmosphere has been hostile and the pressure massive, this is a big deal for many of these players, a last chance to win an away Ashes series. Going back to London with the Ashes retained and a chance to win 3-1 is an awesome effort in my opinion all the whining just makes is sweeter.

Weather they like it or not, England only have themselves to blame for Australia being raining Ashes champs

A good piece on Cricinfo today citing Simon Taufel on LinkedIn (of all places). What did Australia do that breached the “Spirit of Cricket”? The only breach I can see is Bairstow disrespecting his opponents and the umpire by thinking he and he alone gets to decide when the ball is dead.

https://www.lords.org/mcc/the-laws-of-cricket/preamble-to-the-laws-spirit-of-cricket

Flem’s Verdict: Is spirit of cricket needed? It gives teams grey areas to exploit instead of accepting umpire's decision

Three times Broad throws one of his “Celebrappeals” in this game. Running off hands aloft failing to turn to the umpire. Openly expressing disdain for umpire decisions over the last two tests. Spirit of Cricket mate 👍

The “not seeking an advantage” argument is nonsense. The proximity of the keeper is the only thing that makes this stumping unique, had Bairstow absent mindedly wandered off against a spinner we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Watch an hour of Australia batting on day 4. Nearly every ball is watched through to the keeper, no one moves until that ball is passed on the to slip fielder. Players literally stand in their crease looking at the umpire waiting to hear “over” before walking out.

Large sections of English cricket and their media are embarrassing themselves here. The arguments are absurd. It sounds like an older brother in backyard cricket complaining to his mum after his younger sibling has knocked him over.

He wasn’t attempting a run“, he was stumped. “The ball was dead“, no it wasn’t. “Bairstow felt it was the end of the over“, that’s nice. “The square leg umpire was walking in“, Gaffney wasn’t doing his job then.

Stuart Broad has just given Pat Cummins a lecture on moral standards. The audacity is gobsmacking
