The Crusaders take on the Sharks in a top-of-the-competition clash at AMI Stadium on Friday evening as Round 12 of Super Rugby kicks off.

This weekend sees the top four teams in the competition play off as the best from each conference go head to head. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of this exciting clash starting from 5:35pm AEST.

Now the reality is that while this match sees No.1 and No.2 in the overall competition ladder go head to head, there is actually 13 points between them in real terms.

While the Crusaders have been sweeping almost everything that is put in front of them, the Sharks have had a very up and down season.

Weirdly they’ve been incredible one week (for example beating the 2018 finalists the Lions by 37 points) and then the next time they play they’ll lose (remember Round 10 where they lost at home to the average Reds?).

For the Sharks the good news is that their side is pretty settled. Unfortunately they will be without Mtawarira upfront as he’s had to return home early through injury but they do welcome back Louis Schreuder at scrum-half and his team will need a strong performance from him.

Some Sharks fans might also get excited by the fact that the Crusaders have made a number of changes to their run on side and will be starting a less experienced lineup.

However the devil is in the detail and when you look at the names stepping in for the home side you can see it’s going to be a very tough night for the South Africans.

They’ve dropped David Havili but brought in Will Jordan – the top try scorer in the competition. They’re resting Ryan Crotty but bring in All Black Jack Goodhue.

The one chink in the Crusaders’ armour might be at fly-half. Mitchell Hunt is an exciting young talent but he’s nowhere near Richie Mo’unga and the Sharks will need to take advantage of this somehow.

They key is going to be the battle up front. Even with Sam Whitelock absent, the Crusaders have an impressive pack and it’ll need the Sharks to be at their best to win that physical battle and give their backs a chance.

While no one really expects the Sharks to win this game, the coach will want his men to force the Crusaders to work hard and genuinely earn the win.

There are only a few rounds left in the regular season and the Sharks have a slender lead at the top of the South African conference.

If they can take confidence into next week’s match against the Chiefs and pick up a rare overseas win before heading home they could set themselves up for a good run in.

Prediction
The Crusaders are going to win this one. No ifs or buts. So the challenging question is how close can the Sharks keep it? If the South Africans can pick up a losing bonus point then they should consider that a good day out.

Sadly for them the Crusaders are not only at home but they will want to give Kieran Read a night to remember as he runs out for his 150th Super Rugby appearance.

Crusaders to win by 12.

errr.... " The use of technology only suggested here as, like I posted elsewhere, blood does seem to be a bit thicker than water…in those tense moments. " i have no idea what ur on about. my point was that there is not advantage to a team if the other team does things to kill that advantage - and at that point the ref shud stop play . go and look again if u like - he did not stop play even after the head high tackle. if a team is willing to commit fouls after the penalty advantage - then there is no advantage. it does not matter which team plays - it shud be the way game is reffed. as i said above that was the way the Gallagher match was reffed.

CUW, for us as spectators that last passage of play last night was quite nerve wrecking, that poor guy reffing has it 100 times worse, you thought he was lenient towards the sharks, us shark supporters thought he was assisting crusaders, thats the way it is, in those very tense situations close to the end of the game, make use of technology and yes, strike one, strike two..OUT. The use of technology only suggested here as, like I posted elsewhere, blood does seem to be a bit thicker than water...in those tense moments.

BM, I had the sharks winning so, like you, pretty disappointed, but thought the reffing generally was actually quite good, the penalty for the sharks 16 diving on the defending crusader apart (very poor reffing while sharks on strong attack), I personally thought last week's officiating was a lot worse with the ref working hard to reduce the shark's winning margin against the Tahs. At one stage the linesman made a call regarding a try when he clearly did not even have a view on the play, view blocked by bodies. In general, it does seem that blood is thicker than water, will try and watch the matches in SA tomorrow with objectivity re officiating....BUT, the sharks played well but still looked like schoolboys playing a professional side, 3 tries to none, not going for kick-able penalties shows great confidence and contempt for the opponents, even though they nearly overplayed their hand..

True that. Strange result with us getting the 3 comp points.

Yes, but the Sharks have lost 4 at home! At least the Stormers have some predictability: they stink when they travel! The Sharks seem to want to get away from Durban.

What's really crazy is the Saders have secured home advantage through the playoffs practically every year since the 2011 earthquake - and still don't have a proper stadium! They should top the latter again this season, while the Rebes (the only Aussie team in the top half right now) and Canes ought to join them with home playoffs. South Africa is looking a little more interesting, as all the other teams in the conference are within striking distance of the Sharks with games in hand. We may even see more Saffa teams in the playoffs this year than Kiwis, while Aussie is set for the bare minimum

They've had such an up and down season, although to be fair the entire SA conference is like a roller coaster. If one of those teams can put together 3 to 4 weeks of consistent performance and get some decent results they can steal the whole conference.

Sharks should play every match away. It’s home that does them in!

3 tries to none, but the Shark showed real starch in their defence. This game was a prime example of a FH playing as a link only, either by instructions or to afraid to make mistakes n the Saders ran on 2 cylinders all night.....very lucky.

Crusaders were rubbish it is as if they did not watch the last week match. trying to run wide , trying to out-maul ?? onlything crusaders did not do what the waratahs did is to kick at the sharks backs. i wonder why they cannot adapt to conditions - it was obvious the ball was wet n slippery , yet crusaders played a wide and offloading game. what happened to their pick n drive forwards game ??

that was very poor reffing from the ref. Sharks after conceding an off side penalty went on to concede an offside penalty and a head high penalty during advantage period on the same attacking sequence. the ref shud have stopped play after the second off side and warned the sharks. even untill a try was scored he did not warn them despite like 5 - 6 penalties inside the 5m area. that was seriosly poor. there was one match in Gallagher where the ref warned one team in similar circumstances and then went on to give 3 yellow cards in 3 minutes for continus fouls. i just cant understand why refs get so agitated when teams commit fouls in other areas but get very shy when near the goal line. maybe it has to be written into the Laws - that 3 / 4 continuous penalties inside the 5m area is auto yellow for defending team.

yep funny to say but i reckon kicking that last goal was a mistake. should have put it into the corner and spent the last few minutes either attacking or making the crusders go 100m

The ref did everything bar picking the ball up and scoring the try for the crusaders himself lol.

Sharks still the most successful overseas side in NZ though. Can't help feeling they might have converted a couple of penalty kicks into tries with a slightly refined strategy and been out of sight. I wouldn't have begrudged them the win today.

Bludy New Zealanders!!! Every Sharks game in NZ ends with 10 straight penalties to the losing NZ team from the 75th minute and then they score in 84th minute long after the hooter after 400 penalties and steal a win, or in this case a draw. Yoh. Does my head in.

Strange combo of Hunt news moving south + underwhelming game tonight might make for nervous southerners and the player himself!
