The Jaguares welcome the Chiefs to Buenos Aires in the second quarter final of this year’s Super Rugby competition.

Both sides are taking great recent form into this all or nothing match and while the Jaguares are the favourites in many people’s eyes, this game is going to be a very close affair.

After 18 rounds of the regular season we’ve got down to the real business and this game should be the clash of the round. For the Jaguares they really couldn’t be in a better position.

They’re the in-form team of the competition, they’ve won their conference and they have the home advantage. What’s more they were able to take advantage of playing the Sunwolves in Round 18 and rested lots of their top talent.

That talent will all come flooding back into the Jaguares starting line up and coach Gonzalo Quesada must be excited about being able to include names like Tomas Lavanini, Mayco Vivas, Agustin Creevy, Santiago Medrano, Pablo Matera, Marcos Kremer and Javier Ortega Desio to the pack.

That is an incredible amount of experience there alone and the battle up front is going to be so important.

In the backs too, the Jaguares are recalling some of their best with Tomas Cubeli and Joaquin Diaz Bonilla lining up in the halves together and Matias Moroni and Emiliano Boffeli in the back three.

But don’t discount the Chiefs. After a terrible start and injuries to key players their season was being spoken about as being dead and buried.

Yet they’ve found a way to come together as a team and learned how to win with the talent that they have. This has led to them losing only three matches from the past 11 and scoring an absolute ton of points in the past few weeks.

In the most recent test of their strength they went to Melbourne in Round 18 knowing that only a big win would see them make the finals.

They destroyed the home side who were also fighting for knock out rugby and should be going into this match against the Jaguares with plenty of confidence.

A lot of that confidence is coming from the return of club hero Sam Cane who has really helped his team take a step up since he returned from long term injury a few rounds ago.

Equally they will be very happy that there are almost zero changes to their starting line up. The only change coach Colin Cooper has made is to bring in Tumua Manu to play in the centres.

Of course overall season record matters but almost more important is momentum going into the Finals and both these teams are in great form.

They’ve played three times so far in Super Rugby and after 240 minutes of rugby there is only three points separating them.

Prediction
This one is very hard to call. You naturally want to go for the Jags but just as you go to write that down you have this nagging feeling that the Chiefs are going to do something special in Argentina.

Time to toss a coin maybe? In the end the Jaguares are at home and it feels like they have the better pack which will give them the ability to build control and a strong platform for their backs.

Jaguares by 5.

I had missed your comment Carlos. But again, I wasn’t meaning to knock anyone, it was just observing the disparity between the two set ups.

Yes, particularly for the horrid start, the flak Cooper took for it and DMac going at the worst time possible.

Well for a start theyre likely playing a NH side in the quarters if they qualify, and they found that a piece of pi:s last time.

Oh, I thought it was just some rich plonk who wanted his own germ free stand. Some coaches have their little idiyo’s - Earle Kirton used to stand behind the posts the whole game in his gumboots.

I wrote before that Quesada elects to watch the game alone in that box, without computers, just with his walkie talkie and sometimes some paper for notes. I mentioned how calm he always appears, never losing his control. Unlike most other coaches. You may have missed my prior comments.

Sorry Nobes, I didn’t mean to insinuate a conspiracy, disrespect or mistreatment, I just thought it looked funny af. I know we have come along way from laser pointers aimed at kickers. I just thought the difference in the set ups was quite noticeable. I should have also pointed out the Jags had one guy on a (paper) notebook, and Chiefs had 4 dudes on laptops… and notebook won. Triumph for old school tech. I hope you also saw my post congratulating the Jags for the good win and recognising that they dug deep with heart to hold the Chiefs out in the last 10mins. I had picked the Chiefs for the win, but said at the time it was based on my heart (high school years spent in Hamilton) rather than my head. I’m picking a Jags/Saders final… head and heart with the Saders on that one sorry.

Paulo, quit looking for ghosts all over the place. Quesada has been sitting in the same place since game one. I surprise you did not make a comment on this issue when Chiefs visited Jaguares in the regular season. All visitors has been sitting in the same place where Cullen and his team were sitting and nobody complained. All Chiefs were treated with respect. Early on in the week Jaguares changed his training schedule to aloud the Chiefs to use the same facilities to train . The rain had made a mess of the place where the Chiefs suppose to do it.

Also, did anyone else notice they sat the Jags coach in a massive room with plenty of plush leather seats for 10+ people, all to himself. And Chiefs coaches had to squeeze the four of them into a small box of a room all squashed together? Funny af

Well he certainly took the Chiefs further than I thought they would go Danny, I had them penned as bottom of NZ conference with their player roster, I think Cooper did well!!

Anibal, Chiefs had more possessions, more territory, more run meters, more rucks won, more clean breaks, more defenders beaten and more offloaded. Jags did tremendously to absorb all this and still come out on top. Very even match with Jags deserved winners.

Congrats Jags, good win and showed heart to keep them out in last 10mins, could have gone either way, but the Jags buoyed on by the crowd dig deep enough. Concerning how their scrum was dominated, who ever they play next week will certainly be looking at that. Chiefs (corrected spelling error) handling really let them down, so many dropped balls that relieves pressure when they really needed to turn it up. Good effort to make the finals though, didn’t look likely early on.

Tute Moroni is having a superb season. Plays with pure passion, yet cold as ice when he has to. The presence of mind to run under the posts and not go for the dive is remarkable, at least for an Argentinean player.

Not what I read, a lot were saying they were most capable of an upset out of all the matches. Yes some thought they would win, definitely doesn't need an I told you so comment when everyone else is applauding a great contest between two top sides.

Jags definitely more accurate in the second half. Stepped up, defended and attacked well. Deserved winners. Thoroughly enjoyed the match.

Yeah, it was a good game and fair play to the Kiwis congratulating the Jags on their win, but a majority of all Kiwi fans on this site were backing the Chiefs, but what else is new?
