Match preview:

The Waratahs host the Hurricanes Saturday night at Brookvale Oval, Sydney. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:45pm AEDT.

Welcome to the first Trans-Tasman game of Super Rugby season 2019. This will be our first chance to take a look at how the quality of Australian sides is shaping up versus those of New Zealand ahaead of the 2019 world cup.

The ‘Tahs can go into this match knowing that they have won their last two home games against New Zealand teams – both of these were against the Highlanders, one of them coming in the quarterfinals last year. They have also won nine of their last 11 games on Australian soil.

The Hurricanes, on the other hand, have won four of their last six matches against the Waratahs, including the last two.

Boasting both Australia’s incumbent captain in Michael Hooper and arguably it’s biggest star in Israel Folau, the Waratahs are one of the more formidable franchises in the country, and this week will have Karmichael Hunt make his NSW debut after running out of chances at the Queensland Reds.

The ‘Canes will be buoyed by the fitness of Dane Coles who looks set to enjoy some consistency at senior level for the first time since their 2016 championship campaign, and has been named captain again.

Prediction
According to the bookies, the Hurricanes are supposed to beat the Waratahs – but with a sound playing model and reinforcement from Wallabies such as Karmichael Hunt and Adam-Ashley Cooper, they may surprise the pundits. Especially considering they did the same versus the Highlanders – twice.

Well, he wasn’t even playing top level rugby prior to being promoted to the Wallabies squad and team to allegedly raise behavioural standards. Wasn’t that a brilliant captain’s call?

I would have thought Rona should play there. AAC is so old.

Folau can't pass left to right that's his biggest issue. So right wing seems the way to go

only saw first 40. hunt seemed to be getting into. of the 3 that left us, that is the one i really wish didn't go. aac seemed slow though saw him pass a ball! rona i am not a fan of but he took his try very well with a nice break, draw and pass from izzy. worried about the tah pack, like last year. need a jacques p. more and more i am convinced he was the secret to that 2014 team. alot like beau and radike for qld in 2011

The Tahs were kept in that game by some of the most biased reffing ever seen Tahs offside at EVERY ruck - never penalised Canes rush defence penalised even though they have come from onside and only advanced once the HB has the ball in his hands This clown hasn't a clue what the rules are The disallowed try is a joke of a ruling The ruck at the end when the Hurricanes win the ball and somehow this moron thinks the Tahs should get a penalty This muppet shouldn't be allowed near another rugby field ever Worst Ref of ALL TIME

Two dad's got badly exposed by Jordie just before half time. Looked like he and Hunt were in disagreement as they set up for that lineout defence

Forget Foley, for me one of the striking things about the Waratahs match was how ineffective Hooper is - getting pushed backwards when two tries scored, missing tackles - eg Laumape just walked through him. Zero threat at the breakdown. The contrast with Savea, NZ’s no.2 no.7, was embarrassing. The guy has a great heart and a engine but apparently not enough bulk or power. Misses on average one tackle a game which is what Pocock misses in a season. Just incomprehensible he is given a guaranteed place in the Wallabies starting XV. As for props who repeatedly risk penalties for the sake of some minuscule advantage at scrum time - is anyone coaching them if they don’t have any brains of their own?

And about 2 rucks before that Hooper cleared out one of the 'Canes with a tackle around the neck and the ref didn't notice that. When the Tahs stopped the try in the corner there was more than a hint of a shoulder charge too and the ref didn't notice that. Go through the game with a keen eye and you'll notice plenty that the refs didn't. 'Tis part of rugby/

‘Kicks taken earlier in the match aren’t pressure kicks.’ That’s my point exactly. So the other ones he nailed earlier in the match last night aren’t relevant. He’s far from the Iceman on these kicks. He makes some, misses others. He isn’t at fault for last night’s loss, I think that rests primarily with the Tahs’ set piece.

Kicks taken earlier in the match arent match deciders. Its handy to get any, sometimes you just cant get them all. All youre really saying is that he gets most, misses some. Difference is the reaction of fans. We Blues supporters didnt put the match fault on our kicker, and we had more reason to do so. Foleys ‘trapped’ in some minds as the furst to go to for a loss. Look at this article heading. Pretty sure 22 other players contributed for 79 minutes to be behind on your scoreboard.

Yeah it’d be nice to have a lump like that in the back row, but the Tshs lack locks. Simmons was awful most of the time.

I see the Hurricanes improving a lot and after listening to Hooper post match I don't share that feeling about the Tahs

I think there’s a lot, to be honest. The bigger issue is the meters the Waratahs and Wallabies get on clearance kicks with leas pressure on the receiver. Such as those last two penalties.

His overall kick percentage last is literally irrelevant to ‘those pressure kicks’. He could make 99 out of 100 and still be average on those pressure kicks, if the 1 out of 100 he often missed were those pressure kicks. People always talk about that last kick vs Scotland. But there were a lot of high pressure kicks earlier in that match against Scotland that would have basically won us the game, and Foley missed 2-4. I can also think of plenty of others, such as during game 1 of the England series, where rather than putting England to bed, we didn’t reach nearly the number of points we should have while they were coming back, due to goal kicking.

Well hes two from two in kicks to win significant matches. Cant recall him missing one as important as either of thise two. Hes kicked 80% last night? Better tgan average. Our kickers paled in comparison.

Well Foley had a 100% four from four success rate prior to the kick so its unfortunate he picks that one to miss. Blues kicker had two chances to draw and win the match and we donr blame him solely for the loss. Its disappointing, especially when the pack celebrated getting the penalty. Kickers hate missing in those situations. At the moment no ones dominating this comp, close matches all except ive yet to catch up with the overnight ones, and we could be in for a close series. Several ABs are to return and that might help our chances but after last night Canes and Crusaders, and eventhe Rebels can consider themselves a bit fortunate.

Exit strategy is going too be important for wallabies come RWC,I like the idea of having 3 Fullbacks in the team or players who can kick well under pressure, but they should have genuine speed so Hodge is out, maybe at centre for wallabies. It has too be chosen out of this group 1.Banks 2.Folau 3.Beale 4.Morahan 5.JOC We still lack a left boot,Godwin would have been useful ,but very unlikely he will play for wallabies again. Is there a centre in AUS that has a left boot?if so he should be considered.
