Beauden Barrett sets club fitness record in first training session back

By The Roar / Editor

Beauden Barrett has been keeping in great shape during isolation it seems after setting a cracking pace in the Blues fitness Test.

The ‘Bronco’ fitness test is a popular one for rugby teams and involves sprints of 20 metres, 40 metres and 60 metres up and back 5 times. It’s a total of 1200 metres for those playing at home.

Barrett completed the test in 4 minutes and 12 seconds which equates to an average pace of 17km/h.

McCaw is 4.35, pretty damn good for a forward and may well be the best in the pack But plenty AB's backs go under that

Fair enough, I was just confused (it happens often). As Davis stated, it is surprising that Ritchie would hold the record, he wasn’t slow, but surely one of the backs could have put more effort it in? It’s part of his legend I guess haha

I didn't know that but you're right - if HRH Sir Richie was the previous holder that is impressive. I'd be a bit surprised if that's true though given so many like lightening fast players who have done that test.

I read this in the NZ herald. It was stated it as a NZ SR record. I cannot confirm or deny but I wouldn't be surprised that McC was so aerobically fit.

I didn’t read the article but that would be interesting. This says it’s a club record and as far as I remember Ritchie was never a Blue?

According to the Kiwi press, the previous record was held by His Royal Highness Sir Richie McCaw. It is most impressive for a 100+ kilo forward than for a skinny back to have had this record.

I wonder if he could do a 4 minute mile - probably.

That's impressive! If he kept it up for about 2.5 hours he would complete a marathon, and that's a really good time. Think about what it might take to run a marathon in 2 hours.

I've never heard the bronco called "popular" before! It's great to see that these guys have clearly been highly motivated during lockdown. The break might have even been good for career longevity.

Great effort and especially out of lockdown. Good for the Blues too as if he is to come in and take control of the backline and insert himself as a leader, setting an example like this is the perfect start.

Incredible pace considering how much momentum you lose on all those turns.
