Did this Scottish prop get away with an eye gouge attempt on Michael Hooper?

By The Roar / Editor

Nobody noticed this from Zandar Fagerson on the skipper at the time, with everyone’s attention focused on a far slighter knock to the head from Allan Alaalatoa.

To me it looked as if he put his hand (fingers) over Hooper's mouth to shut him up. I wouldn't say at all that it was an attempted eye gouge.

I didn't dispute whether AAA should have been carded. All I said is deliberately sticking your hand in a blokes face and eyes is foul play and also worth a card. The ref is allowed to card two players at once for two separate incidents in the same passage of play.

AAA made contact with the head, it deserved to be a yellow, if he was skilled enough to connect with force as it appeared was his intention then he would have got a red.

If Hooper grabbed his eyes and played the ref it would have been red and a try: https://www.ruck.co.uk/nasty-stuff-scotland-star-could-be-in-trouble-for-eye-gouge-on-michael-hooper/

Think he might be in trouble. Another angle doesn't look good: https://www.ruck.co.uk/nasty-stuff-scotland-star-could-be-in-trouble-for-eye-gouge-on-michael-hooper/

Tooly This is from the World Rugby Laws website, so in theory as Greysy mentioned it shoul have been a yellow as well Reckless Tackle A player is deemed to have made reckless contact during a tackle or attempted tackle or during other phases of the game if in making contact, the player knew or should have known that there was a risk of making contact with the head of an opponent, but did so anyway. This sanction applies even if the tackle starts below the line of the shoulders. This type of contact also applies to grabbing and rolling/ twisting around the head/ neck area even if the contact starts below the line of the shoulders. Minimum sanction: Yellow card Maximum sanction: Red card

Nothing there except a love Pat . Hooper is always in there yapping but doing nothing, then backing away with his hands up.

That's pretty bad. If AAA's incidental contact is a yellow, then surely a deliberate whack of fingers in the face like that should be too. Referee should have given a yellow each way.

Oh wow, that should be a citing for sure, just as the tackle on Rodda should be. Consistency is required.
