Michael Cheika deplores Damian McKenzie red card as fans wanted to see him play

By The Roar / Editor

The Chiefs star missed out on most of the game as the Reds held on to win 40-34. Michael Cheika also suggested that McKenzie didn’t generate the force in the collision. Do you agree with his assessment?

That's not mitigating in regards to his contact to the head. The sort of thing they look at is height of the tackled player and does it change from when the tackler starts his tackle. So is the tackled player dropping in the tackle etc

Sure...Yet the Toomua tackle happened in Aus.....

Nope, this is a clear direct shoulder to the head plus with force. Zero other factors to look at. They have been relaxed on this in the NZ comp but nowhere else in the world as international rugby have not relaxed the rules on this at all.

Why would he? It was a straight red every day of the week. High shot with shoulder directly to the head. A lazy effort by McKenzie and he received exactly what was deserved. Cheika needs to get on board with this head knock directive and his comments show that he is a dinosaur in the game. What is encouraging is the new 20minute red card rule.

yeah I agree with you. I cant think of any fans who thought it would be a good idea to hire him as a commentator. All I can say is at least its not Kearns lol

Jacko, mine was a general comment about the man’s role as a commentator (too soon after his role as a dictator), not just his opinion about DMac, (an opinion I have some resonance with).

Dmacs right arn wraps around and up over the shoulder before his shoulder hits McD

But it wasnt in the Highlanders rebels game or the other high tackle in this exact game. So NO it wouldnt have been a red in every other game. Last year I would have 100% agreed with you but this year they have relaxed it again until this.

Ken the headline is a beatup. Cheika stated many other reasons why he didnt see it as a red

Contact to the head starts at Red and only goes to Yellow with mitigating factors. What are the mitigating factors that you see in this?

Maybe because Toomua doesn't play for the brumbies...

2021-05-31T11:29:06+00:00

If you want consistency and attention to the laws can I ask how come the TMO in this game saw fit, quite rightly, to get the referee to look at the tackle? Yet the same guy, Ian Smith, the TMO in the Highlanders v Brumbies game did not even raise the question and refer to the referee Toomua's head-high tackle in that game? How come you can make unfounded accusations about Kiwi referees and yet stay so blindly quiet whilst taking the high ground about refereeing. Just asking?

If he didn't intend the hit with the shoulder, then it could only be because he turned away from the flying headbutt. At the height he went into contact, they were the only two possible points of contact.

But they all went to see Berry

"Tate McDermott isn't hurt" Wow, Cheika has xray vision that can tell if he received and injury to his brain. He needs to get with the times, any contact with the head is not allowed for player safety reasons.

His arms are by his side. He made no attempt to wrap. Jumped into contact, no arms, shoulder to the head. How on earth is he not attempting a big hit?

Direct contact with the head has been a red card for a fair while now

Cheika, and whoever hired him, have misread the room. When you’ve had your say for five years on a mill a year, and blown it, it’s time to shut up for a few years and listen, not opine to the people you’ve disappointed. Too soon.
