Western United made it two wins from two and piled on more misery for Brisbane Roar manager Robbie Fowler.
There was plenty of huff and puff from the Roar but they were desperately bereft of any quality in front of goal.
Western United took the lead ten minutes in when a delicious Alessandro Diamanti cross found Connor Pain at the back post and the wing-back slotted past Jamie Young.
Besart Berisha doubled the away sides advantage when he converted Aaron Calver’s cross on the stroke of half time.
Western United were happy to sit back in the second half and the Roar couldn’t find a way past Filip Kurto to continue to finish off their woeful 2019 at Suncorp Stadium.
Plenty more for Fowler to ponder but United’s Mark Rudan will be a happy man as his side moves into third spot.

Brisbane Roar and Western United will lock horns for the first time this evening at the Suncorp Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting at 7:30pm (AEDT).
Brisbane head coach Robbie Fowler will be looking for a response from his side after their 5-1 drubbing to Sydney FC last weekend. There’s no disgrace in losing to the league leaders, but the meek display led to Fowler describing it as a “wake-up call”. The defeat saw the Roar drop to eighth on the ladder, but a victory would see them jump into fifth spot – temporarily at least.
Western United ended a run of three consecutive defeats with a 3-1 win against Melbourne Victory, striker Besart Berisha notching a brace against his old club to take his seasons tally to five goals.
He’ll be looking to inflict more misery on his one of his other former employers tonight. The A-League’s all-time record goalscorer enjoyed three stellar seasons with the Roar from 2011 to 2014, taking out two championships and finding the net 48 times.
The game could hinge on both teams’ creative sparks. For the Roar, Irish schemer Jay O’Shea has created 27 goalscoring chances so far this season – the most by any player in the competition.
For the opposition, Italian Alessandro Diamanti has shown his class, with many marvelling at his cultured left boot. He lies just behind O’Shea with 24 chances created.
Prediction
The Roar have been a difficult one to call thus far this term. The return of Berisha should add a little bit of spice to the affair, with Brisbane surely looking to put last weekend’s nightmare showing firmly behind them. I’m plumping for a score draw.

no, the crowd was fair. It's a big stadium but they closed off the corner seating for this game (eight away seats excepted) and moved people to either end and the sides. The atmosphere was actually quite good, with the Den slowly rebuilding. Parked bus, bogged in front of goal with seemingly many injuries to the green team once they scored a goal made for a rather strangled game. They should be fined for bringing our league into disrepute.

This is nothing unusual. Happens all over the world. And, believe me, it's not easy maintaining the structure to defend deep. It takes immense concentration & discipline. The great Barcelona team in 2010 Semi Final of the UEFA Champions League couldn't break down Inter Milan coached by Mourinho at the Camp Nou. Barcelona's team that day included: Messi, Xavi, Ibrahimovic, Pique, Alves who can all move the ball at high speed, extremely accurately.

I agree. They seem to apply a multiple of 1.5 when nobody turns up. It was around 5500.

Stevo - A very shrewd observation. This tactic has as it's basis trying to prevent your opponent from scoring and was pioneered in the Serie A in the late 1950's early 60's,and was christened "Catenaccio". The Italian "super" teams brought the tactic to it's apex by 1965 but what historians won't tell you is that although it bred success in winning important games it also almost killed off top football in Italy as fans stayed away in their thousands. It is an abomination of a tactic that almost directly nullifies all that is good in the game and in progressive years the emphasis went from straight out direct physical fouling to incorporate any form of time wasting, especially after a breakaway goal had secured a lead. The A -League, at this point in time, needs this type of public entertainment like it needs a "hole-in-the-head", as crowds. already in free fall, continue to stay away from a sport that here in Australia, needs all the support it can get You "cure" mentions creativity and slow movement, another shrewd observation , for it was the antitheses and execution of those very things that signalled the "end" for catenaccio, when Celtic ran Inter Milan "off the park" in a European Cup final in Portugal. The ultra defensive tactic soon disappeared off pitches around the world. Cheers jb.

Surely that attendance figure can't be correct. 8,582?

Well comments from the stands around me at Suncorp... "Worse than last year" "These guys are awful" "The goals up this way" "I didn't like Aloisi but this is worse" "No movement" "So slow" Plenty for Robbie to ponder but the fans have made up their minds. I caught the bus back to town with a bloke who flies from Mackay for every home home and has done for the last 4 years he was beside himself with frustration. I only travel an hour to get to the game so I can only imagine.

Last week I watched City unable to penetrate Popovic’s defensive wall this week Roar had the same problem with WU. Lack of creativity and slow movement.

At least Robbie will salvage something from the season. A wooden spoon. Will look impressive on his coaching CV.

Considering the pedigree in front of goal that their coach possessed as a player, I can’t fathom just how bereft of ideas BR are in that final third. I used to think similar thoughts when Popa was coaching WSW but this is ridiculous. Statistics will do nothing to mask the inadequacies in front of goal, or anywhere around the opponent’s penalty area for that matter. Woeful.

That young fella Diamanti just seems to enjoy every minute he’s on the pitch
