4 SCORE 1

The Matildas face Jamaica in their final group match of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5am (AEST).

It all comes down to this. Australia need to defeat Jamaica in Grenoble and hope for the cards to fall their way in the match between Italy and Brazil to ensure automatic qualification to the knock-out phase.

Should Italy win, the Matildas can leap frog the Brazilians with a three-goal win of their own. If Brazil manages to topple the Italians, the Australians will most likely nestle into third spot in the group. That would see all three teams locked on six points and separated by goal difference alone.

Should that scenario play out, the Matildas will most likely move through via one of the four additional spots, but then face either Germany or France in the Round of 16. That is not the desirable outcome.

Sneaking into second place in the group is vital and, with both Group C matches being played at the same time, the Matildas’ bench may have one eye on the score in Valenciennes.

The Matildas’ opening performance against Italy was listless at times and their stunning 3-2 comeback win against Brazil featured some good fortune via a controversial VAR decision.

The team has looked far from fluent in attack and a little leaky in defence. Today presents the opportunity to find some rhythm and build the confidence that will be required should the team indeed advance.

Prediction
Separating head and heart is a little tricky in such moments, however logic suggests that the Matildas should be too strong for the Jamaicans.

They are a more powerful unit and with the touch of class that Sam Kerr provides up front, should be able to find the net on numerous occasions in this match.

Australia 4-1 Jamaica

The Matildas have defeated Jamaica 4-1 in Grenoble to complete their group play at the 2019 Women's World Cup. It was a glorious day for Australian captain Sam Kerr, scoring all four against an exciting Jamaican team. After the drama of the week just passed and a slow start to the tournament against Italy, the team has bounced back strongly in the best possible way with two victories. With Brazil defeating Italy in the other match, the Matildas will now finish second in their group and play Norway in the Round of 16. That is a great result, considering third place in the group would most likely have matched them up against France; a team everybody fears. Kerr started brilliantly with a headed goal in the 11th minute before adding another in the 42nd from point blank range. In between, the Australians had enjoyed the lion's share of possession and could potentially have grabbed another goal or two before the break. They probably wished they had early on in the second half as the Jamaicans came out firing from the first minute and found the net with a goal of their own in the 49th. It sacred the heck out the Australian fans in the stands who could see the World Cup dream slipping away, as the Jamaicans applied constant pressure and created chance after chance. However, the goal didn't come and Kerr was Johnny on the spot to add a third for the Matildas in the 69th minute before pouncing on a terrible error by the Jamaican keeper in the 83rd to snare her fourth. It was that goal that moved the Australians into second place in the group as the Brazilians held on grimly against Italy for an agonising seven minutes of added time. The team will now refocus and prepare for a huge Round of 16 match-up, against a disciplined and talented opponent. Ante Milicic will be looking for a little more from his midfield in terms of creating chances; without Kerr's opportunism, things looked a little light on. Emily Gielnik was excellent for the Matildas and Hayley Raso provided some spark when she came on at the 60th minute mark. Defensively things were solid yet against a more polished opponent in the next round, the back four will need to be even more vigilant. It is such an exciting time for Australian football, with the Matildas just one game away from a World Cup quarter-final. Final Score Australia…………..4 Jamaica…………...1

Kerr’s post game interview was sufficiently bland and cliche-riddled. That should make the pearl-clutching crew happy!

Sam Kerr to the rescue. What a forward, a real penalty box predator with great instincts of where to be. One of the most intelligent forwards, men or women, in the sport today.

Yep Australia finish second with Italy 0 : Brazil 1. So the first game against Italy affects the group but all top three should go through.

Brazil have beaten Italy by one goal to nil and the Matildas will finish second in the group. Great news and Norway loom as their likely opponent, although I will need to check that. Australia…………..4 Jamaica…………...1
