Australia vs Jamaica
2019 Women's FIFA World Cup, Group stage
|Venue: Stade des Alpes, Grenoble, France|
The Matildas face Jamaica in their final group match of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5am (AEST).
It all comes down to this. Australia need to defeat Jamaica in Grenoble and hope for the cards to fall their way in the match between Italy and Brazil to ensure automatic qualification to the knock-out phase.
Should Italy win, the Matildas can leap frog the Brazilians with a three-goal win of their own. If Brazil manages to topple the Italians, the Australians will most likely nestle into third spot in the group. That would see all three teams locked on six points and separated by goal difference alone.
Should that scenario play out, the Matildas will most likely move through via one of the four additional spots, but then face either Germany or France in the Round of 16. That is not the desirable outcome.
Sneaking into second place in the group is vital and, with both Group C matches being played at the same time, the Matildas’ bench may have one eye on the score in Valenciennes.
The Matildas’ opening performance against Italy was listless at times and their stunning 3-2 comeback win against Brazil featured some good fortune via a controversial VAR decision.
The team has looked far from fluent in attack and a little leaky in defence. Today presents the opportunity to find some rhythm and build the confidence that will be required should the team indeed advance.
Separating head and heart is a little tricky in such moments, however logic suggests that the Matildas should be too strong for the Jamaicans.
They are a more powerful unit and with the touch of class that Sam Kerr provides up front, should be able to find the net on numerous occasions in this match.
Australia 4-1 Jamaica
