Stu - The long ball game as specified by our mutual friend AA is a myth. Playing a "long ball" can be caused at various stages of the game and the geographics in which the "long ball" is played. If a ball is bouncing around a heavily populated penalty box it is no surprise if a defender, given the chance, hoofs the ball as high and hard as he can away from the 'danger area". Then of course there is another example shown yesterday when a player with vision noted the opposition keeper well off his line and decided to speculate with a long ball from 50 yards out. He hit the cross bar!!!. Later in the game the same player, noting a huge gap behind the opponents right full back set up a race with a well placed long ball. a race that Roar won, and scored from the resultant crossed ball. All long balls, but under the existing conditions, quite effective. I read with interest your comment re. "fast forward movement" Do you know that in the latest statistical analysis method of a player's individual performance, the player is awarded points for doing certain things. eg A pass misplaced to an opponent-0 points, A pass back to a team-mate -2 points, A pass sideways to a team-mate 4 points and a through ball played into space resulting in attack building can get up to 10 points. At games end a players "chart" can be assessed and points totalled thus giving an overall rating as to how, not only the player, but the team, has performed. Hence forward movement is always stressed as being "good".. Cheers jb.

Was just reflecting from recent posts on another topic regarding the long ball 'game'. I am happy to take on board my age when I note that the long balls generate fast forward movement when played accurately and with purpose (however this still remains debatable with the roar as they still turn it back). Then I consider where the game compares to our other football codes that do rely on fast forward movement. Our level of ability in soccer here results in very slow movement when playing possession, however the concept suits the purist. Last nights game was riddled with error, however the pace of the game resulted, in my opinion, as a more attractive watching event....perhaps it may attract more fans here if adopted and refined??

Stu .- Roar were playing with ten men long before Mehabratu came on. Roar have a potentially dangerous left winger, who has shown glimpses of what he can do, but the service he DOESN'T get from his midfield is almost immeasurable. Having a dangerous front man is almost pointless if he seldom ,if ever ,gets the proper ball fed to him that lets him attack with his strength and speed, as in the second goal. That's what team building is all about, just like your car engine, get it firing on ALL cylinders. Cheers jb

Coastybol - This was a game between 2 teams desperate for points and not sure how to go about it. Both coaches have to be shaking their heads as, after an hour, both introduced their full quota of substitutes in desperate efforts to change the status quo. The blunt truth of the matter is that neither of the sides are playing good enough football to worry the likes of Melbourne City or Sydney FC when both these teams are playing to their capabilities. Suffice to say that at times it looked like WSW were playing against Young and the keeper won, but one good thing to emerge was the form shown by the youngster Trewin, who replaced Aldred, not easy shoes to fill. Apart from a few highlights it's back to the drawing board for these 2 coaches to come up with something that works. Cheers jb.

Lesson #1: don’t write off Brisbane Roar. They’re back! Lesson #2: WSW can’t afford any more losses, especially after playing the most A-League matches out of every team.
