Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for Italy?

By The Roar / Editor

The Wallabies have dropped their first game of the June International window, going down to Scotland in what could only be described as a disappointing loss.

»Full match report
»Re-live all the action in our live blog

The 24-19 scoreline mightn’t seem all bad, but with the Wallabies unable to crack the Scottish line in the last ten minutes of the game despite holding a majority of possession, it will raise concerns with coach Michael Cheika and his staff.

Not only that, but the defensive effort early in the game to allow the visitors to run on first half points, and then gallop back into the match during the second half despite the Wallabies taking a lead 23 minutes from time through a Will Genia try.

With that being said, it’s worth turning an eye to the final fixture in the international window for Australia.

What changes should the Wallabies make before they come up against Italy in a week’s time?

For the answer to that all-important question, Roarers, we’re turning things over to you.

Which of this week’s players have earned another go next time around, and which of them are headed back to the chalkboard?

Who deserves to come right in, and who should be made to earn their place?

In short – who comes in, who goes out?

There will, we bet, be a variety of opinions on the matter, and in this week’s Roar Forum you are invited to let us know in the comments what yours is.

For your reference, here’s the full team from the Test against Scotland:

Alternatively Jones learnt from his mistakes. Eddie disrespected the scrum during his tenure as wallabies coach to the detriment of Australian rugby. Japan had a very weak scrum (understandably) under Jones but they had the fastest hook and clearance I have ever seen, different story on tight heads though. He's got massive forward depth in England so that makes life easier but he's doing a great job overall.

Been playing the game since I was 6 and watch every Aussie super rugby game start to finish. I know what good football looks like, I know what a #7 and a #15 does for all 80 minutes. I played the position Last week and spent a lot of my time protecting rucks and wear headgear because it is messy work. How about you guys? I issue you a challenge each. Write an article about the role of a Fullback and the Role of an open side flanker. Describe what they should be doing in the various phases of the game, both attack and defense. Look at open sides across the world, add Scotland to the list. Are there any Australian players like that. Do the Wallaby selections reflect that need. How many ruck penalties was Hoops responsible for on Saturday. I counted 4. New to analysis my A$$. Try watching more than just the highlights packages and stop listing to the Fox Commentary. I watched the game on both FTA and a Fox replay. The 10 Commentators spoke of how Hooper isn't very good over the ball. The Fox commentators: "HOOPER" every time he touched the ball or went near it. Said nothing when he caked it in the dying minutes. Here is where the Bias starts The Bias and Ignorance is yours good sirs. Do some homework and then come back to me with a cogent argument instead of name calling. There is a lot more to rugby than finishing off tries. And for the Record, I didn't give myself the Guru title. That was given to me by the Roar. I am guessing it came from writing well thought out or entertaining articles and providing insight, opinion and education. Have you written anything lately?

Kiwi halves box kick all the time and use it as a great attacking weapon. It comes down to execution. Peter, if you ban it, then the rush defense is always on and you will never get away from your own scrum. A good box kick is high and followed by 2 flankers a 9 a 10 and a winger. A bad Box kick is charged down or is low and flaccid caught by the opposition in open space giving a perfect attacking platform.

There are 2 types of Australian. One lives in NSW. The other was a massive chip on his shoulder.

Neil, these keyboard warriors are bitching for a fight. I've told 'gurus' where they can put their opinions and I was blocked from posting for a year. One guru before the RWC said that he is Australian but he would be saddened to see the Wallabies win because it doesn't reflect the state of world rugby. An Australian posted that !! .... only on The Roar.

Off topic, but Eddie Jones had a dismal 58% win record in his time with the Wallabies, and Cheika's is about the same ~54% or thereabouts. So then Eddie Jones heads to Japan, and then to England, and converts them both from losers into world beaters, in no time flat. Very clearly, that must indicate the big problem with Aus rugby is off-field in the boardrooms and fighting factions. Plainly, something stinks off-field in a BIG way behind the scenes here, that obviously doesn't in other countries, and none of us plebs know what it is.

It's clear Cheika & co are giving the squad an absolute hiding at training - anyone who has watched Super Rugby this season will have noticed Aussie teams dying in the last 20-30 mins and in particular fitter teams (NZ!!!) running away with games. Regardless some guys are not test quality and the sooner we pick guys with a chip on their shoulder and a willingness to out work the opposition, the better. My team to play Italy would be: Wallabies team versus Scotland 1. Scott Sio 2. Tolu Latu 3. Allan Alaalatoa 4. Rory Arnold 5. Adam Coleman 6. Jack Dempsey 7. Michael Hooper 8. Lopeti Timani 9. Will Genia (c) 10. Bernard Foley 11. Henry Speight 12. Karmichael Hunt 13. Israel Folau 14. Sefa Naivalu 15. Dane Haylett-Petty Reserves 16. Tatafu Polota-Nau 17. Toby Smith 18. Sekope Kepu 19. Lukhan Tui 20. Ned Hanigan 21. Jake Gordon 22. Quade Cooper 23. Reece Hodge

Just like this week it was only Scotland eh? Cooper made a visible difference to the Wallaby backline when he came on, it's not his fault certain players do not have the necessary skill level to play international rugby.

Lowlander you've done it again. Stated the obvious but left out the facts to suit your agena... Aren't flyhalfs supposed to pass to outside backs to score ? DERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR CHURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR..Foley had a " Yellow card " ( Scots scored 7 points whilst he was off ) He missed two easy conversions, dropped a dinky high ball, overcooked a crossfield kick into the stands on halfway and missed 5 tackles.. Don`t comment Lowlander if you don't watch the game mate..

You wont get Cooper in the starting team unless Foley is shunted to 12.It wont happen as Foley stuffed up at 12 last year.

Carter is Simmons, But Simmons was better ( Just)..I don't understand Cheika ( Who does).. Hanigan has potential but not now, maybe 3 years or never ..Robertson is atrocious ..If you have a look at the game you will see Robertson getting cleaned out like he was the dwarf in a dwarf throwing competition.. Totally ragdolled..The Fijians did it to him as well, but when you win it gets glossed over..As a prop you must be ashamed being dominated like that at the tackle area..Robertson should be dispensed with for good...Way way out of his depth talent wise and size wise.. Get 135 KEG Tongan Thor in there Chieka, you Blue tinted monocle wearing clown..
