Langer handed considerable selection powers in sweeping panel changes

By Steve Larkin / Wire

New Australian cricket coach Justin Langer has been handed sweeping powers in a shake-up of the selection panel.

Langer will join Greg Chappell and Trevor Hohns on the full-time selection panel with Mark Waugh, who resigned in May, not being replaced.

Langer will also chair Australia’s Twenty20 selection panel in changes Cricket Australia’s general manager of team performance Pat Howard says will deliver the best results across all formats.

Really? Seriously? We only just got over the ladt time the coach was a full time selector. We need to show CA Bart Simpson trying to to get the cupcake and see if something clicks up there.

Agree. They are too close to the team and too many personal equations come into play instead of making an objective decision as to who are the best players to represent the country.

Having either captain or coach as a selector is a fundamentally bad idea.

If you want to play Test cricket, go play for WA. Good news for Bancroft when his suspension is up

Not sure it's the greatest move but I can't see anyone being disappointed about M Waugh moving on.

At least Langer has some real knowledge of the T20 format, unlike Hohns and Chappell who clearly have no clue. I really wish they'd give Ponting an actual role somewhere. He's an extremely valuable mind and he'll lose interest if all he keeps getting are nebulous 'mentoring' roles.

Don't worry jimbo it certainly won't be extended periods...... Just spits and spurts..... Everyone knows he's incapable of staying on the park for more than 2 or 3 games at a time.

Surely though this can't be worse than the previously farcical selection process, and would have to improve it? Maybe the less panel members involved the better.
