Anthony Griffin sacked for not being Nathan Cleary's dad

By Dane Eldridge / Expert

Penrith have sacked Anthony Griffin after the club realised he probably couldn’t coerce Nathan Cleary to stay using sentimentality or a WiFi ban.

Griffin was given his marching orders in dramatic circumstances on Monday, with the board forced to act on an internal review that extraordinarily revealed he wasn’t Cleary’s father.

The discovery clashed with the club’s plan to bullpen the halfback with a package deal involving his dad, a move that has been in the works all year as evidenced by Phil Gould’s repeated denials.

Despite Griffin presenting a strong case to the board, it is believed the absence of any parental relation to Cleary was the sticking point that could not be ignored.

This led to doubts about the former Broncos man’s ability to leverage emotional ties with the rookie, or even threaten a grounding if his son didn’t remain.

As a result, they agreed it was in the best interests of the club to axe their head coach four weeks out from the finals.

While currently in a holding pattern, the Panthers are believed to have earmarked a candidate to fill the role of Nathan’s father in the package deal, with Tigers coach Ivan Cleary boasting over 20 years experience in the position.

The Penrith board are currently working on a deal to bring the pair together, with the hope all parties can come to a compromise that gives them everything they want without any concessions.

Griffin’s tenure in the Golden West abruptly comes to an end with two years remaining on his current deal, keeping it in line with the club’s charter of strict 2.67-year contracts for all head coaches.

Following the announcement, Phil Gould further revealed the coach had suffered from an inability to adhere to the “collaborative approach” of doing whatever he said.

Additionally, the general manager admitted his game style had “stagnated”, as reflected in the amount of consecutive finals campaigns it reaped.

However, Gould paid tribute to his fine record of blooding youth while maintaining a positive win-loss record, before conceding it wouldn’t have stopped Nathan nicking off to the Tigers.

He then wished Griffin all the best for the future, even offering to put in a good word for him with the imminently vacant role at the Tigers.

Griffin’s axing brings to a close a tumultuous time at the Panthers.

He accepted the post in 2015 amid fanfare, with Gould presenting him to a pack of excited fans and media at the club’s offices right after hastily removing a guillotine.

While enduring many rumours over the security of his job throughout the years, he was able to bizarrely beat the drop by winning football games.

But eventually, the repeated endorsements from Gould over multiple platforms proved too much to bear, resulting in the respectful send-off of an internal review.

In fairness to the current board , those decisions were previou poor management. Tigers board have been solid for 2 years after a rabble over the previous 7

Nathan has come out and openly stated that he wants to be coached by his dad. There have been stories of him leaving the Panthers to go join his dad at the Tigers so if this is really what he wants, why are you sinking the boot into Cleary Snr and saying that he can't let go?

In regards to your stat that Cleary has not won a premiership after 250 games, it should be taken into account that every team he has coached has been a rebuilding job and he has never really been given the time to benefit from that rebuild (except for 2011 at the Warriors which he took them to the GF). The thing I take from Cleary coaching is that he has never left a team in a worse position than when he started. I think the Panthers would do well with him and could snag that premiership and break the drought that you mentioned (if he goes to the Panthers).

I agree part could be he wants cleary ,but also Gould has the biggest ego in rugby league, now he probably wants to coach and win the gf this year and take all the credit and still be the no#1 know all.when he commentates and when he is wrong he can't admit it and then makes his own rules ,just because he says things it can't be wrong ,no no no no no.

Great Dane! Following Anthony ‘Hook’ Griffin’s interview on NRL 360, your line says it all - “Following the announcement, Phil Gould further revealed the coach had suffered from an inability to adhere to the “collaborative approach” of doing whatever he said.” Gus is the Emporor of Penrith and Hook coached the team his way, not Gus’s way and has now paid the price. ‘You’re fired’! So now ‘Ivan the Tired 2.0’ can be Gus’s ‘Mini Me’ again. Gus lures Ivan with the carrot of coaching his son Nathan and keeps Nathan at the Panthers on a long term deal. Ivan, it’s not the local Under 10’s Soccer team! Your son is a grown adult, it’s time to cut the umbilical cord and let him make his own way in life. You are still his Dad and can provide your expert guidance at arms length, like every other Dad does, you don’t need to control Nathan and the team he plays in. He is doing it pretty well on his own anyway. How about sparing us this disruptive self-indulgence and honour your Tigers contract and let Nathan be his own man. Good luck Ivan.

Great question @ferret. Nathan's stats in every category for this season are below Mitchell Pearce. He's solid enogh, and has a level head, but it's hard to see quite what everyone is getting so excited about. Maloney and Luai both dazzled winning games in Cleary's absence. When Nathan's contract is renewed on big money, both of those players will be squeezed out. And as BA pointed out on another thread, Cleary senior has coached 250 games for no premiership - and no coach has ever won their first premiership after more than 250 games. So all up, it seems like a high cost gamble from Gould to buy a premiership - that is highly unlikely to pay off.

If this was true how ordinary to basically end his coaching career with thier public critique of his coaching style, just to secure a players signature.

I think there would be a few ex-Tigers coaches and players that are hoping he does leave and give the Tigers a bit of their own medicine when it comes to honoring contracts. I think it will just be a matter of how many $$ the Panthers would be willing to chip in to appease the Tigers' board.

'Six tackles with Gus' should draw well today as will Hook on 360 tonight. Would love to see/ hear Dane Eldridge interview Gus Gould.

Let's talk about Nathan, cos this is what this whole drama is about, nicht wahr? I like him. He's a very mature young person and a good halfback with a lot of promise. He's tough and no showboat (two big plusses in my book. (And no, I'm not a Panthers supporter). But will he become a "great" halfback? And is he worth possibly wrecking clubs (Penrith / Wests Tigers) and coaches (Griffin / Cleary) and reputations (Gould) over? Obviously some of those mentioned above think he is. It's a very big call. What happens when Ivan gets accused of favouring Nathan in selections if his form is off? How can a father be objective about his son (how can any parent be objective about their child?), and make the best call for the team / club. I think it'll all end in tears.

The Eldridge Insight makes my day. Scenes of Tiger v Panther at the Colosseum with Emperor Augustus in attendance came to mind.. Legal lips are licking. The 2.67 years may yet convert to $2.67M compensation. +++ Togas will become standard dress at the Park.
