The Roar's 2018 All Australian team - as voted by you!

By Josh / Expert

The results are in! Yesterday we asked you to vote for The Roar’s 2018 All Australian team, and with the AFL’s team set to be selected tonight, it’s time to reveal our results.

The Roar’s 2018 All Australian team

B: Rory Laird, Jeremy McGovern, Shannon Hurn (C)
HB: Elliot Yeo, Alex Rance, Lachie Whitfield
C: Andrew Gaff, Clayton Oliver, Shaun Higgins
HF: Dustin Martin, Jack Riewoldt (VC), Robbie Gray
F: Luke Breust, Lance Franklin, Jordan De Goey
Fol: Max Gawn, Tom Mitchell, Patrick Cripps
Int: Brodie Grundy, Devon Smith, Patrick Dangerfield, Jack Macrae

Eight names in particular stood out among the votes this year: Laird, Cripps, Grundy, Breust, Mitchell, Gawn, Oliver and Riewoldt.

Those players were all picked in at least 80 per cent of the teams submitted, with Gawn and Riewoldt tied for the most unanimously picked.

Brodie Grundy also enjoyed huge support and left us with simply no choice but to select two ruckmen.

Probably the most surprising omissions were in the forward line, with Tom Hawkins, Josh Caddy and Ben Brown all missing out.

The voters opted for a more athletic and mobile set up, voting in Lance Franklin ahead of Hawkins or Brown, and Jordan De Goey over Caddy.

Devon Smith enjoyed strong support to secure a spot on the bench, and Shannon Hurn shapes as the obvious choice for captain of those selected.

Dayne Beams would pick up the ‘most unlucky’ award, receiving the most votes of any player not to make the final cut.

My 2018 All Australian team

B: Rory Laird, Harris Andrews, Alex Rance
HB: Lachie Whitfield, Jeremy McGovern, Elliot Yeo
C: Andrew Gaff, Tom Mitchell, Shaun Higgins (C)

F: Josh Caddy, Ben Brown, Tom Hawkins

Int: Brodie Grundy, Jack Macrae, Dayne Beams, Patrick Dangerfield.

So long as we’re talking about All Australian teams, here’s mine also.

The midfield is always hard to pick and this year I found it harder than most. Stephen Coniglio, Steele Sidebottom and Devon Smith are all players I wanted to include, but couldn’t ultimately find room for.

I’ve gone for a more traditional forward line than what our readers voted in, opting for the dominance of Tom Hawkins and Ben Brown, while also giving a nod to Josh Caddy.

Will Hoskin-Elliott came into my thinking a lot too – personally, I’d have him ahead of De Goey in the pecking order based on this year’s form.

I’ve never been a fan of putting two rucks in the team and never will be, but there’s simply no denying either Gawn or Grundy a spot this year.

If you were lucky enough to have both on an AFL list then you would find a way to fit them both into your side, so I’m at peace with it.

In the absence of selecting an actual AFL captain in the side, I’ve popped the title on Shaun Higgins since I once had a dream about him captaining the Bulldogs, Jack Riewoldt getting the nod for vice.

So you'd have 2 mids named forward over 2 forwards that have both kicked more than 35 this year?

Martin along with Dangerfield polled votes from coaches in the coaches award in 15/22 games......the most in the league. But yeah went missing and didn’t show up. If you’re going to compare him to last season then you should hold all the players to the standard he set last year and if that’s the case everyone’s had a poor year.

I hate the Hawks but I can't believe Jack Gunston isn't even rating a mention. His year was much more influential than Caddy's and he showed the versatility to play on the wing or down back. Honestly, Caddy had a very good season but his influence on games is being overplayed. Only once (R4 vs Pies) did he kick multiple goals against a side that reached the finals. Gunston did that six times, as well as averaging more goals, disposals and marks per game. De Goey was a big impact player but didn't quite have the consistency to make the cut. I'd have Gunston, Smith, Sidebottom and/or Dangerfield in the forward line before Caddy or de Goey.

Nat Fyfe and Lachie Neale are more glaring omissions...but, after all, it is not a representative vote.

That's nice, but playing in a good team always makes the stats look good. He went missing for huge chunks of games, and sometimes didn't bother to turn up. Overrated this year.

Yeah being 1st for centre clearances, 1st for score involvements, 1st for inside 50s, 5th for goal assists, and kicked the most goals for a midfielder...........yeah what a horrible season.

Most obvious omission in both teams ( though included in the AFL site’s version of fans choice) is Sydney defender Jake Lloyd. Top in the AFL for kicks, second for rebound fifties, top ten for overall disposals and marks, top defender in Super Coach total points, and likely to be Sydney b&f. Crucial playmaker who if playing for a Melbourne club would be a lock.

I can't believe you have Jack Macrae on the bench...you've pick Martin on reputation; no way he's had an AA year.

Maybe some future year but he'll need to play more than the 13 games he managed this year.

Oops, that's an error on my part. I've fixed it up now (and apologies to Steele Sidebottom who has been dumped).

This team is obviously influenced by the gaggle of West Coast supporters on here. I'd have Stewart in over Hurn for sure.

Something's not right there Josh - you have Brodie Grundy in the team, but he's not in the list from the number of players from each club, but Jack Macrae is in the list but not in the team...I can't believe you left Jack Macrae out of the team. He's had a way better year than Martin and Steele Sidebottom.

Tom Stewart not in is a crock of poo.

Really difficult task. And almost pointless, imo. Nevertheless two excellent teams picked there. From a biased perspective would have liked to see Dylan Grimes slotted down back but realistically who do you leave out? Quite a few worthy players will miss out and each and every selector brings their own bias to the table.

Pretty good. Just like to mention Tom Stewart, maybe even Gazza. Go Cats.
