The Richmond Tigers have begun their surge towards a second consecutive premiership with a comprehensive victory over the Hawthorn Hawks at the MCG in the first qualifying final.
The highlight of the evening was an incredible goal kicked by Dustin Martin in the second term which might well have won goal of the year had it occured in the home-and-away season.
Much was made of a supposed master plan being devised by Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson to combat the seemingly unbeatable Tigers and if Thursday night’s effort was anything to go by, that plan may not even exist.
The Tigers were dominant, despite the Hawks bringing some real enthusiasm to the contest in the first two quarters and managing to stay within arms reach of the champions.
The second half became something of a familiar story for the Hawks and the rest of the competition, as Hawthorn fell victim to the sustained pressure that has broken the back of many a team after team over the last 18 months.
The results over the remainder of the weekend will determine the next opponent for the Hawks and they deserve another shot after their wonderful second half of the season – yet one must pose the obvious questions.
Is advancing further and facing the might of the Tigers later in September a fruitless exercise? Is there a team in the finals that could seriously challenge the yellow and black?
For now there’s nothing to say but well played, Richmond.

As will the idea that Collingwood's position on the ladder is due to the softest of draws. Eagles to make an absolute meal of them.

' . . . and yet somehow made 3rd.' Yeah, on the back of the softest of draws. Won't beat Sydney, or GWS, next week regardless of where it's played.

This is what I mean by scamper, a real guru stands by what they have said, you Pete are a Molly Meldrum type of guru. Loving your use of the roar standard of straw man, always a inclusion by those lacking basic debating skills on here

Don't know yet with JK Matti as we haven't played you in the QF yet. As for Dimma "coaching for a loss" another straw man argument from you. Will have to name you Scarecrow with all this straw. I actually suggested Dimma wouldn't have minded a loss to break the MCG streak before the finals, not coaching for a loss and I stand by that. Would be the ultimate irony for the MCG streak to end on GF day.

Keep trying Pete, prefer to make a small reading error than make boastful comments showing off a lack of footy acumen like you do. How was Dimma coaching for a loss holding up? Or wce being jk reliant?

That 50 wasn't against Cotchin, it was against Prestia for kicking the ball away. Agree the game was ugly but Richmond have no choice but to play that way as they don't have the traditional big man type of forward to kick to which is why they're so into Lynch. Reiwoldt does an outstanding job and you have to credit the tigers for finding a way to play that covers up their inadequacies. Geelong have been trying to do that for most of Chris Scott's tenure but we haven't managed it as successfully as Richmond.

Matti, I'm not struggling in any way. You're the one who doesn't even check ground sizes before making inaccurate comments and are claiming it will be a WCE v Rich GF before the finals even started. I'm excited. The Pies haven't been in the finals for four years and we have at least two finals, most likely more. I haven't forecast the Pies past the prelim as yet but think we will at least make a prelim. I'm worried about meeting Geelong along the way. We have named one of our strongest sides on paper for the year too, albeit with some underdone players. I can't wait to see how the boys handle the challenge of WCE in the Perth cauldron but whatever happens it will be great experience for our emerging side who have battled one of the worst injury counts in the competition this year and yet somehow made 3rd. I expect the Pies to win and win well by 23 points. Also can't wait for the game tonight. Too powerful in form sides up against each other, I expect the Cats to win but feel whoever does will take care of the Hawks next week as well.

Naah, Petie's never wrong! The concern for you is that he'll jump on WC in the GF!

Richmond's style of pressure on the opposition and getting the ball forward at any cost seems to be a winning formula. Contrary to others I didn't think Hawthorn were really in the game at any time. One can argue that Richmond's style doesn't necessarily make pretty football but it has proven not only to be successful but hard to combat. The idea that Hawthorn's position on the ladder was due to a soft draw, was only reinforced by the ease in which the tigers dispatched them.

Really-Hawthorn had a charmed run. The 50 metre penalty against Cotchin was soft at best and Roughhead simply threw the ball away when he received his donation goal for holding the man. At least two of their nine goals were donations. The umpires kept Hawthorn in it early until sheer running power overwhelmed them

It's not that we follow you. More that you infect every article with some silly comment about Richmond. It is of no surprise you have been wrong before. We have witnessed it so often when it comes to Richmond predictions.

If, and when, Collingwood and Hawthorn exit the finals in straight sets it surely will indicate they are not truly top 4 sides. The Pies certainly aided by one of the softest draws of all time.

An interesting comment that Matti..."aren't truly top four sides" . Perhaps we should let you reallocate the end of home and away season ladder based on your opinion? Give AFL house a call, I'm sure Gil will call you back.

It's interesting how many of you Richmond fans follow my tips and comments. perhaps I should start charging you all subscription fees since you follow me around so much. I tipped Hawks in a close one. I was wrong. Might surprise you but I've been wrong before. Many others tipped the Hawks too, they were also wrong. That's footy, you get some tips right some wrong. Richmond were good but there's two games left to win before you start crowing, Hawks and the umpiring were both disappointing.

God that game was hard to watch. Footy is so ugly at the moment. Geez the umps were harsh on Hawthorn, especially early. I can't remember who the Hawthorn player was that got caught holding the ball in the first quarter, but the umpire got it wrong twice - he was tackled by a Richmond player, then Martin came in and had him in a head lock, and the umpire gave holding the ball when it was clearly too high, and he gave the ball to Martin when he should have given it to the other Richmond player, if it was actually holding the ball. Then there's Vlaustin grabbing O Meara after he took a mark and was on the ground - that's a 50 metre penalty every day of the week. These are meant to be the best umpires, yet they got the simple things wrong again and again. Anywho, that's my whinge over. The umpires didn't cost Hawthorn. West Coast are probably the only team who can beat Richmond, because they have the kicking power to get around their forward zone. Richmond have perfected modern footy; it's horrible to watch, but it works.

I thought Hawthorn did well to stay with the Tiges for the bulk of the game, it was really at the back end of the 3rd quarter that took the game away from us and we just couldn't overcome that margin... that's a positive for me. However when you consider Richmond had 30 scoring shots to 19, and Hawthorn failed to kick 10 goals, we really weren't in that game. Again, Richmond showed how good they are just getting the ball forward, as they have done all year.

The result was never in doubt. The question was by how much? Eat 'em alive Tigers!

It was a big night at the Spread Eagle post game. The term threepeat was certainly on everyone's lips. We await our next victim in a fortnight.
