Dragons ready to roll on past Rabbitohs

By Adam Bagnall / Roar Guru

The Dragons and Rabbitohs will contest the semi-final at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night, the first finals clash between the two since way back in 1984, with a bumper crowd of at least 50,000 expected.

The Bunnies went down gallantly 29-28 to the Storm last week, while the Red V turned back the clock with a commanding 48-18 thumping of the Broncos.

However the win came at a cost, with skipper Gareth Widdop suffering a recurrence of his shoulder injury, which will see him miss the game and the rest of the season in all likelihood.

Many experts tipped a Broncos win, but a soft lead-in game against Manly appeared to leave them underdone, and following the win, St George Illawarra can roll on and beat the Bunnies.

Despite the loss of Widdop, the Dragons have the arsenal to win, and with Ben Hunt silencing his critics, Tariq Sims in beast mode, and the rise of young Zac Lomax, they are suddenly looking in pretty decent form, with three wins from their last four games.

Hunt will assume centre stage with utility Kurt Mann coming into the six jersey, a spot he knows well. Euan Aitken should be fit again, but Lomax has done enough to retain his jersey, so Aitken may have to settle for a spot on the bench.

Jack De Belin is a 50-50 prospect and James Graham also picked up a head knock, so will be monitored closely. Apart from that, Paul McGregor’s squad looks pretty healthy and should be full of confidence.

In South Sydney, they must be pretty devastated to have gone down by a solitary point, and mentally, it would have been pretty draining. They threw the proverbial kitchen sink at the Storm, and would have beaten any other side, but a Cameron Munster field goal ensured his side enjoyed a week off.

How Souths pick themselves up again is the big question.

The Dragons, out of all the sides in the finals, had the chance to start a big run, coming from lower down on the table, and the Broncos game was just the start.

The other games were fairly evenly split, and you wouldn’t be surprised if results went the other way. But by beating Brisbane in front of 47,000 fans at Suncorp Stadium, the Dragons started something special and will head into Saturday’s match full of confidence.

What’s more, the Rabbitohs would have preferred to play the Broncos than the Dragons, who will attract as many, if not more fans to ANZ Stadium.

The Rabbitohs pack is led by Sam Burgess, but as the lesser-built Felise Kaufusi showed on Friday night, a couple of big hits can knock the eldest of the Burgi down a peg or two, and there isn’t really anyone else that will stand up and take a leadership role.

The twins, George and Thomas, follow in Sam’s shadow, Angus Chrichton is still early in his career, and John Sutton is okay without being great.

Cut off the snake’s head, and the Souths pack will fall. I’m looking at you Tariq Sims – put a few big shots on Sam and you will go a long way to winning the match for your side.

Get the impression that the Dragons were made to look a lot better than they are because of the bronco's disorganisation in defence. Sims went over Nikorima twice & his brother once ( his head had been done in by then after needless penalties) & I see the right side defence of the bunnies doing a lot better. Hunt had a day out but am yet to be convinced he can steer anyone around under pressure, his opposition last week let him do what he pleased because they were disjointed & leaderless.

Let the Dragons be favourites as the Bunnies won't make the same mistakes again, Sammy might have had an ordinary game but, he will still be right up there doing what he does best together with the twins. Crichton has had the flue and hence his below par form, as far as we know, Reno and GI should be both ok for this game. The Bunnies are no easy beats and the Dragons better bring their A game as the Bunnies will not make the same mistakes as the Broncos did. Should be a terrific game but I can't see the Bunnies being beat.

The bunnies will win by 30. The dragons played their grand final last week and if they’re relying on Ben Hunt to steer them around the park they’re in for a long day. Widdop is a big loss. The bunnies played absolute quality football, the broncos played the worst game I’ve seen them play this year and the dragons took advantage of a school boy performance. Bunnies are still a higher quality and more consistent team. For the dragons to win their only chance if Sims and Frizzell having blinders. I have the sharks getting up too. I was 1/4 last week though so take my tips with a grain of salt.

This will be another great round of football. I've tried to come up with tips - but I desisted when I realised that the cause was lost. For the first time in my conscious ( non Riesling assisted) memory, I've concluded that, all things considered, any of them can win. Beyond that, I'm lost for words. Footy Coma.

The big question isn't whether Souths can pick themselves up. They'll definitely be up. They're one of the fittest teams in the comp. The big question is whether Saints can maintain the form they showed against the Broncos. And their squad isn't exactly healthy either. They're carrying a lot of injuries.

Good luck with the 50k. Or do you mean both matches.

Ah Mau played for NZ in their recent loss to England. He has signed with the NZ Wrriers for the next few years.

Adam, why didn't you put in this piece last week before the game against the Broncos? I'm also wondering why you didn't answer the obvious questions "did the Dragons play their grand final 3 weeks early, will the entire side get over playing way more minutes than they're used to, what attitude will the Bunnies bring to the table and are they fully fit and which Ben Hunt will turn up to play?" I'm less optimistic this week than I was when we played the Broncos because that was a game where we had our best side and had nothing to lose. Now there's a sniff of a possible premiership, but we're down Widdop and other guys are carrying significant injuries. Regardless of the result, I just hope the mighty Dragons play with pride and give it everything.

I'm looking forward to both games this weekend because I have no idea who will win. At this stage there are no favourites. Dragons lose Widdop but they go in with momentum and a positive mental attitude. Souths have the extra 2 days rest but will be mentally down and physically battered. Can the Burgess Bros turn up or will it be another Sims special. I think also for the Dragons they really need Graham out there, he is inspirational. Sims needs to target Reynolds early and make him feel his injuries. If they take Reynolds kicking game out they will go a long way to winning the match. I though Reynolds kicking kept the Bunnies in it last week against the Storm. Try for GI and made the Storm start their sets inside their 20m. For the Rabbits they need the Burgii to step up so Cook can run. They were all nullified last week and it started with Sam. Two clubs with long histories and big fan base, it will be a good one.

That's is also my concern with the Rabbits this week. This is reminding me of Eels last year where they put all their energy in that first semi against the Storm and came so close to pulling it off but after losing they lost all their momentum and energy and an upset loss to Cowboys the following week. The Dragons coming off a huge upset win (similar to Cowboys last year) and they'll have all the energy and the attitude. I think Siebold will have to find a way to rally his team to get up physically but especially mentally for this one. Could we see the Dragons doing a Cowboys 2017 this year and get to the GF.

Surely Lomax must hold his spot with Widdop out - so that the Dragons have a goalkicking option in the run on side. He was great last week Lomax, a real good talent.

Really looking forward to this game as it was souths earlier in the year that picked apart saints defense even though they lost. Hopefully the mighty dragons will show the commitment that they did on Sunday because if they do it will be an absolute cracker of a game. I’m hoping that the refs allow souths to play with a bigger 5 than the melb game, as this suits both sides attack, and I think the result will hinge on the best defensive pressure. The lack of space afforded by the refs really played into melb hands and I’d like to see a good open game without the in your face defence so the attack con thrive. Bring it on, can’t wait ????

Gotta love this game...!!! The Dragons big win has just added a whole new dimension to this semi final series. I can understand Dragons fans being in high hopes after such a massive turnaround in form. I still have Souths as favourites (with 0 from 4 on the weekend what do I know?) but the question of how Souths bounce back from a physically, mentally and emotionally draining game is valid. Dragons are carrying injuries to key men Widdop and JDB. Souths to GI and Reynolds. I think “cutting off the head” might be more difficult than it sounds...particularly when Burgess has a point to prove after last week. Another enthralling match up given the long term history and lack of recent semi final history between the two clubs. As is the game between co-1967 entrants. Couldn’t have been scripted better...

The Dragons were outstanding in a stunning turn around, they will definitely go into this game confident as they should. Souths put in a huge shift despite not playing there best and Sammy having a shocker. They will need to be better with ball security, right side defence and use of the bench. Both teams will be battered and bruised, think it will be a close one.

Absolutely Jimmmy. My only real concern for Souths is how badly they got beat up last week. Last time they amped up for Storm they lost 3 straight after. Take nothing from Saints though, they were bloody good but varying quality of game.

When you look at how top 8 finished with only 2 points between 1st and 8th an upset was on the cards between Broncos amd st George and st George had to put in a good sooner or later and it happened on Sunday. To me anyone of the 6 can win it if they put a good one in.

I think Lomax will hold his spot so Aitken may go to the bench, or possibly Field, and yes Dragons offer a lot more from the bench. Contain Sam Burgess and no one seems seems to stand up and dominate.

Saints were very clinical against Broncos and I think mentally Souths will be a little drained. If they do win, it won't be comfortably. Dragons carry plenty of momentum into the game
