AFL legend Leigh Matthews says the grand final umpires choked when they didn’t pay a free kick against West Coast before Dom Sheed kicked the winning goal.
Sheed broke Collingwood hearts with less than two minutes left at the MCG when he marked and coolly slotted a set shot from deep in a pocket in Saturday’s five-point thriller.
But Matthews, a four-time premiership coach including one with the Magpies in 1990, is adamant Sheed should’ve had the ball taken off him.
Matthews took a dim view of Willie Rioli’s efforts to keep Collingwood defender Brayden Maynard from affecting Sheed’s marking attempt and was scathing of the umpires’ inaction.
“I think that proves that umpires can choke as well,” Matthews told Channel Seven’s Game Day.
“That’s a shepherd, that’s not a protection, that’s an illegal shepherd.”
Maynard furiously protested to controlling umpire Brett Rosebury as he set the mark for Sheed’s fateful shot on goal.
Experienced whistleblowers Shaun Ryan and Matt Stevic rounded out the grand final umpiring panel that paid 30 free kicks for the match – 17-13 in Collingwood’s favour – with just four awarded in the frantic final term.
The AFL average for total free kicks paid per match across this season was just a tick more than 41.
“There were four free kicks (paid) in the fourth quarter so what we’re saying is there were only four illegal actions in the last quarter,” an incredulous Matthews continued.
“Seriously … I don’t believe in this principle that just because it’s a big game in the last quarter (we) don’t pay free kicks.
“If they’re there they’ve got to be paid.
“… Those moments where you don’t blow the whistle … those moments are just as critical as the ones where you do.”

Agree! What happen if Goldsack took the intercept mark instead of Sheed? Should it be Rioli‘s free kick the?

What a sad little man Mathews has become. Too ignorant to except defeat graciously he has to whinge and moan about 1 single incident from the whole game. Try watching the whole game with both eyes open Mathews you will see c/wood throwing the ball on the wing & Lecras head high tackle just to name 2 that are clear free's but not paid. Pick up your dummy and grow up

Pies are the most successful out of the traditional clubs, Eagles the most successful out of the new clubs. They have a decent finals rivalry already, both had the same premiership coach in Micky Malthouse. Won't be the last time these two meet on the last day in September and the Pies inevitably will have their moment. Just relieved it wasn't on Saturday ;-)

At different points in the game, Cripps and Ryan both tackled Pies players in the square which were rolled gold holding the ball... umpire balled it up both times. So give the Eagles and extra 12 points, deduct Sheeds 6 and what is the final result? Rioli held his ground as he is allowed to do, if the Pies player used his hips instead of hands he would have bumped Rioli out of the way and still had time to spoil. Fair mark, great goal. Enjoy the off season.

There is something building between these clubs Doc. I like it. In the end I read somewhere you beat us three times in our last 11 games? Sounds about right. Gov is a freak, possibly in the top 5 players in the competition right now IMO. As for the Pies, not sure who will be left Doc in the big forward stakes. I waxed and waned on Lynch all year but I'm kind've glad we didn;t land him now. The club seems such a happy place and one bloke on a stack of $$$ well, I'd rather it be spread around. When you lose a flag by a kick you're list is as close as it can be. Dunn and Scharenberg won't be back until halfway through the year and Dunn is getting on. The club will go all out for both May and keeping Moore and Langdon.

at no stage does Maynard look at the ball, Rioli has eyes on the ball the whole time, free kick Rioli

Would we have been on here as magnanimous as you if one straight kick went the other way? I hope so. Would we have been cranky at the four missed shots? Also,I hope so! But look at the margins in the three games - 35 points,17 points,5 points... GF replay looks good for your team Peter I thought I saw a change in training load for the Eagles about six weeks out, with a sacrifice of speed for strength. They seemed to keep their effort up till the bitter end of each quarter, scoring accordingly - and especially the last, without letting fatigue affect their skills. The four marks and kicks that led to Sheed's goal were as good as any all game I suppose when you have to depend on gathering the loose ball every time and your best marks are in the back 50,the effort must tell. Will the Pies look at strength over speed? Will they recruit a big forward to supplement Cox? We'll wait and see

That's what I thought. Maynard engaged Rioli first and Rioli just pushed him away. He wasn't blocking Maynard because Maynard was actually slightly in front of Rioli.

On the Rioli Maynard situation, rewatching it very clear that Rioli was getting ready for the mark, and Maynard was focusing on stopping Rioli, tussles between the two, Rioli arguably taken high. The reality of course is focusing on a non-decision for the team you support or at a moment in time rather than focusing on all the other non-decisions especially that should have gone the way for West Coast, i.e. HTB on Howe in the goal square, high on Shuey.

No block. Two players grappling. It appears a block from the long shot. But the other angle tells a very different story.????

I say give the umpires their head. Every incident is slightly different and every interpretation is also. If they called everything they saw they would still make mistakes. Why not err on the side of making too few a calls. At least the game keeps moving. If they make too many calls (which of course they do sometimes) the game really suffers. The game is what is important. Umpires and players alike all serve the game.

It’s all hot air fellas. Even Eddie won’t challenge it in the courts. No replays, no whingeing, we move on, tweak a few things in the off season and have another crack. One thing when you get older is the years race. Seems 3 months ago the Tigers were celebrating their epic flag. Before we know it the seasons back on. Eagles won ten in a row, smashed the Tigers in the one game they played them and beat Pies 3-0. Could we have won? Absolutely but it would have been mainly those 4 missed Eagles shots in the last that would have let us steal an unlikely flag. The Eagles are just a better balanced side and their bigger bodies stood up in the cauldron at the end.

There were plenty of missed frees to both sides. That was definitely on. Just admit it. Winners always believe premierships are pure.

I am glad I was not the only one seeing Collingwood players throw the ball
