UPDATE: Inglis suspended for two games by NRL

By News / Wire

UPDATE: Greg Inglis will miss Australia’s upcoming Test matches against New Zealand and Tonga, after he was issued a two-match ban by the NRL.

While Inglis will not be stripped of the captaincy, he will be forced to sit out the upcoming games after he was charged with drink driving and speeding yesterday.

Original story follows

Greg Inglis has apologised after being charged with drink driving but remains hopeful that he can keep the Kangaroos captaincy.

An apologetic Greg Inglis says he will leave it to coach Mal Meninga and the NRL to decide whether he will remain Australian rugby league team captain after being charged with drink driving and speeding.

On Monday, Inglis was named Kangaroos skipper by Meninga just hours before he was pulled over by police after being clocked speeding and returning a positive blood alcohol test.

Inglis did not resign or quit the Australian team when he fronted media on Tuesday, as had been speculated by some, saying he hoped to hold on to his captaincy post but would accept any decision taken by those in charge.

The NRL were on Tuesday morning going over the case and at this stage no announcement has been made on whether any action is taken against the South Sydney star.

However, Australian selector Laurie Daley has already suggested Inglis relinquish the position, after he was charged with mid-range drink driving in Lithgow on Monday.

“It has to change things,” he said on the Big Sports Breakfast.

“Greg’s been a terrific leader for South Sydney and Queensland but I don’t think you can have the Australian captain going DUI.”

“I’m pretty sure Greg and Mal (coach Mal Meninga) will come to the decision that he needs to step down as captain of his country.”

Inglis was returning from appearing in the Koori Knockout rugby league tournament in Dubbo when pulled over after being clocked speeding on Monday afternoon and returned a positive blood alcohol test.

The Queensland and South Sydney captain was then taken to a local police station where he allegedly returned a reading of 0.085.

Daley said the affair would likely spell the end of Inglis’s tenure as Kangaroos captain before it had even begun.

“He’s let himself down. He’s let the game down … and he’ll pay a massive price for that,” the chief national selector said.

Should Inglis lose the captaincy, vice-captain Boyd Cordner is tipped to be promoted to the job just days after leading the Sydney Roosters to NRL premiership glory.

Kangaroos forward Josh Papalii was last year stood down from a Test against New Zealand after pleading guilty to drink driving.

However, Papalii was originally named in the squad three-and-a-half months after the incident, and did not lose his position until after his plea in court.

Crucially, Inglis’s date in court won’t arrive until after this month’s Tests against New Zealand and Tonga in Auckland.

Jesse Bromwich lost the Kiwi captaincy when he and Kevin Proctor lost their places in New Zealand’s World Cup squad after a night out in Canberra following a Test loss that resulted in no charges.

Queensland Origin coach Kevin Walters admitted it was disappointing Inglis found himself in the situation.

“I feel for Greg but also understand there is a responsibility that goes with being Australian captain and what needs to be upheld,” he said

“Mal has spoken quite openly about what his expectations are around the team environment, particularly from his senior players.

“I expect that they’ll make a decision this morning on it.”

Inglis had his licence suspended and is scheduled to appear in Lithgow Local Court on November 22.

This was a very stupid and unthoughtful action by GI, especially when he was chosen for such a prestigious position as the Kangaroo’s captain, what was he thinking? For me, there are no excuses as I condemn DUI driving a serious crime! If GI blew 0.085 / 11 hours after his last drink then he would have been (for sure) at least and above 0.2 / 11 hours before! GI must have had a pretty big night on the turps to be still 0.085 2 hours after an 11 hours sleep, which is a mid-range charge. For a 0.085 reading, the law states that it’s an automatic suspension of your licence, you can’t drive any further, when GI goes to court, one of his options is to ‘take a section 10’ which means, “that while a Court has deemed you guilty of an offence, it chooses to dismiss the charge or offence without further penalty and thus omits recording your conviction on your formal record”. That is also and if, no prior DUI convictions were recorded against GI. This should result in a 3 months suspension of his driving licence.

yeah like I have dreams to become a DUI statistic which is what we're talking about, not how great a player he is. He owned up but get this - he still wants to be the captain! sounds to me like he thinks he is special and he'll walk right back into the role on a rolled out red carpet when he's ready. If he had some integrity, he'd take responsibility and step down. Nobody is above the game (except Slater) and Inglis is placing himself above it

He owned up to his mistake but didn't seem to think he should be stripped of the captaincy, in fact it seemed like a simple apology was enough according to Inglis. It came off as being arrogant and thankfully justice has prevailed and he will take no part in the upcoming games. What is he, 30, now? Time to grow up

Your attempting to defend the in defendable mate. He didn’t “ own up “ , he got caught, and as such a high profile player, he would have been ( more than likely) pressured by the club to make a statement. After 3 hrs ( minimum) behind the wheel , he’s sobered up considerably, compared to when he started . He’s doing 100kph plus , with a skinful , hungover and tired . Fronting a press conference isn’t a bad outcome , in comparison to be lowered into a hole in a box . He has to be stood down.

You need to grow three mate to be half the man Inglis is. Sure, he is a senior player and that bears responsibilities to which he failed this time. He owned up and had to front the press which is something you most likely have never had to do when you fooked up. I don't condone what Greg did, in fact I think it is deplorable, but at least he didn't try to hide from it. What's wrong with the average Aussie that he wants to kick a man when he is down?? I once heard a saying, he who is without fault cast the first stone.

That's a very unfair comment mate to say Inglis is weak. It looks like you have some hard yards to do to be any sort of a man. Honestly, talking about shandies, you are weaker than the lemonade part of it to lay the boot in when a man is down. Inglis fronted a press conference, owned up to his fault and was visibly upset for his error. Speaking of low self esteem, that describes you to attack a high profile sportsman because he stuffed up. If you were to replicate what Inglis did you could crawl into an anonymous hole and never have to front the public. Be a real Australian mate and recognise Inglis' mistake and give some compassion for him being man enough to face up to it.

He’s as weak as a Shandy that bloke. Shandy Inglis. What a child. Any man of his age with even the wrong side of Half-Way IQ would know he - as a man - must resign the captaincy. I’m happy for him to play, but fair dinkum. Is this a sport with with low self-esteem , or what? The NRL is carrying on like a battered wife, putting up with one indignity after another.

It's part of the culture. Why was he drinking at all? Why do we need to drink to celebrate?

He should grow a pair and step down from all forms of representative duties himself until he gets himself sorted out, no one should have to take action to stand him down. Clearly, as a senior player, he is still not able to make the appropriate decisions that come with being a responsible adult and superstar of the game that many young citizens (especially indigenous citizens) look up to. Strip the captaincy from him and he'll need to earn it from scratch again.

The Bulldogs suffered a worse fate for less. It is now official, According to Greenberg, one of the 3 or 4 most high profile players in the sport drink driving and risking the lives of other drivers, is less damaging to the image of the game than some blokes drinking too much at a Private Function that was stalked by a media outlet.

Inglis will not be stripped of the captaincy, but will be stood down for 2 games. Is this the standard we accept of a player anointed to the position of Captain of the national side. Personally, I don’t think so.

If he blew 0.085 11 hours after his last drink, he'd have bad to had more than a dozen drinks in the space of 2 hours. Doesn't sound like a smart move when you know you have the long drive back to Sydney the following day. He states he has no charges against his name. If his, now wife, had pressed charges when he, as reported, assaulted her about 9 years ago, that wouldn't be the case. It appears that the NRL can forget this, particularly big Mal who would have championed his appointment. If he retains the captaincy, Cordner can put away his thoughts of ever captaining Aus. Inglis will retire in a couple of years, then Munster will step in. He will have taken on the captaincy of Melb (part of the deal to keep him) & subsequently QLD & Aus. Call it Mal's QLD nepotism. Inglis doesn't deserve to represent Aus as our captain. He apparently knew he had the role before heading off on his drive & still got in the car. A very poor decision, together with family violence, & certainly not the qualities we need in ouur leader/ as our example to the youth who follow NRL. Oh of course, they're too young to recall the family violence, so it doesn't matter.

He was point 0.085 in Lithgow - what was he when he left Dubbo? Incredibly irresponsible and when you consider some of the key messages that are important to all drivers but particularly important to be getting through to young (and older) indigenous people for whom Inglis is looked up to, he can’t retain a leadership role.
