Things get ugly at UFC 229 after Khabib crushes Conor

By The Roar / Editor

Khabib Nurmagomedov has retained the UFC lightweight championship after forcing Conor McGregor to tap out in the fourth round of UFC 229, but headlines will be made instead by what happened after the fight.

Just seconds after his victory Nurmagomedov leapt out of the Octagon and into the crowd to attack fans in McGregor’s corner, while those in Nurmagomedov’s corner climbed into the Octagon to attack the defeated McGregor.

A fan wearing a red shirt managed to land several blows on McGregor, attacking him from behind, before security was able to take control of the situation.

It’s since been confirmed that the three men who attacked McGregor following the fight have been arrested.

Nurmagomedov was showered with boos as he exited the arena, and was not called up for a customary post-fight interview. It remains to be seen what punishment will be handed down, but surely it must be significant.

The fight was always likely to fall Nurmagomedov’s way after McGregor failed to secure an early victory, and a dominant effort from ‘The Eagle’ in the second round made it feel like it was only a matter of time.

The end came in brutal fashion – as the seconds ticked down in the fourth round, Nurmagomedov managed to lock McGregor into a rear naked choke hold, and after struggling in vain to break free McGregor reluctantly tapped out.

The result means Nurmagomedov retains his crown as the UFC’s lightweight champion, while McGregor – after suffering just his second loss in the UFC – will have to ponder his next career move wisely.

More to come.

Just saw the other footage and doesn’t look good for Conor. Well you can excuse him for reacting to Khabib’s guys being in the Octagon but he certainly can’t claim to be an innocent party that was jumped by them. It was pretty clear the first guy was on his way to Khabib- hopefully to pull him off. The last guy in coming from behind still has a lot to answer for though.

Yea I hear they were released after the cops met with Conor. I don’t think anyone can paint Conor as an angel in all this. His performance in the bowels of MSG was so far out of line and also unprecedented. DW and the UFC didn’t come down on him harshly enough (at all really) in the washup of that. But if you break the incidents up that has built up the feaud between these 2, yesterday was on Khabib and his team. Sure Conor has been needling him but that’s part of the game. You’re in the wrong profession if you let the trash talk get under your skin like it clearly did with Khabib after the adrenaline dump of spending three and a half round in the Octagon. As far as Conor taking the first swing, if your opponent has just jumped out of the cage to attack you team and his team is jumping into the cage- what do you expect him to do? I don’t think Khabib’s thugs were jumping the fence to give him a pat on the back for a good fight.

I'm assuming DJ is here commenting because he is outraged by what he saw, which is fair enough and worth commenting on. Besides, DJs perspective is the one we should be paying the most attention to. The damage this has done to the sport of MMA and the UFC as a promotion, is massive. Rather than pushing the sport ahead, it's taken it back years.

Actually I don’t think they are in jail seeing as police released them. Connor didn’t press charges. Which sounds about right. Also, might have come out he hit one of the guys first, granted they shouldn’t have been there in the ring (or on the ring when Connor hit them I think), but like I said, Connor is a clean white snow flake is this rubbish.

If you don't watch this 'rubbish', why are you commenting on it? Which demographic does it appeal to? A little condescending don't you think? What do you say when people judge you? Do you feel you have the right to judge whilst telling others not to judge you?

If I recall correctly, Dana was even more incensed after the dolly through the bus window incident and McGregor suffered little consequences. Dana has a history of 'saying it like it is' after controversial incidents and then not following through with consequences. I think both incidents (the bus and todays brawl) are deplorable --- both involve assaults and should have consequences accordingly. I don't have much confidence unfortunately that there will be significant consequences for khabib, similar to post the bus incident for McGregor, unless the relevant commission takes a strong stand.

Members of Khabib’s team jumped into the Octogon and sucker punched a fighter after the fight. They’re in jail tonight and rightly so. In terms of longer term punishment, there’s every chance it will be taken out of Dana and the UFC’s hands by immigration and/or the Nevada state athletic commission. This is uncharted territory and while Dana taking some sort of action seems fair and likely, he’d never want Khabib banished from the country and effectively the sport due to the fat pot of gold that just landed at the end of the latest rainbow. Strip Khabib and sit him out for 12 months, give Conor and Tony their moment, possibly throw in Diaz 3 and then provided Conor can win 1 or both of those, the world will lose its mind for this rematch. In all of this there’s the Dana tut-tutting the sport being cast into the darkness of thuggery again and there’s the Dana who knows the power of a good story. This is now the UFC’s Harry Potter series and provided those external organizations don’t interfere too much, there’s some enormous pay days ahead because of this.

That was barely a RNCH. The choke didn’t need to be deep, the pressure on his neck would have been immense. It was a completely different situation to the Diaz tap.

Well... no one gets maimed or killed these days. Atleast not in the normal run of things. Ofcourse, but in the ancient times, the highly ranked gladiators weren’t generally maimed or killed either. They were far too expensive and represented far much of an investment for the wealthy owners to let them be maimed or killed. Don’t let Hollywood warp the truth on you.

Are you guys seriously arguing over which one of these dickheads is the biggest dickhead? Call it a tie and you can both go on with your lives. I’ve had occasional interest in MMA but it ended last night

So your saying spitting at someone (which by the way I have yet to see vision of) and then going into a crowd of of guys on your own who had previously tried to ambush you out numbering you by about 10 x is worse than Conor trhrowing a metal trolley at a bus window where someone could have been killed, knowing that he outnumbered them????? OK then

What an absolute disgrace this "sport" is. The gladiator days were 2000+ years ago for a reason. The crowd baying for blood, people being maimed / killed. And we wonder why the crowd gets involved. Surely as a society we have moved on from this.

Jon Jones' career is well and truly alive. You'll see him back in 6 months. And absolutely no chance Khabib gets stripped. Conor attacked the bus and caused 3 fights to be cancelled and the ufc did nothing.

Suspending Jones for a very public incident, where a pregnant woman broke her arm was a very sound business decision, let’s not kid ourselves about that. The negative publicity not suspending would have caused would have hurt the UzfC bank balance more than dropping him for a bit. Same as his aversion to anything that brings the UFC into disrepute. It’s all business, there is no higher power than the dollar where business is concerned. Anything like this that causes disrepute has potential to cause a lot of problems for the business, hence the harsh view on it.

Yeah I’m sure a glorified stunt man could beat two ufc fighters, well with a wwe script it would be that hard. Stunner, stunner, three count, all over
