Ben McDermott added to Australian ODI squad

By Scott Pryde / Expert

With Shaun Marsh battling injuries, Australia have made the decision to add Ben McDermott to their one-day squad.

Currently one-nil down after a big loss to South Africa in Perth on Sunday in the first match of the series, McDermott will come into the squad as cover for Marsh, should he fail to recover in time for the second match in Adelaide on Friday.

Marsh was ruled out of the first match following an ‘abscess of the buttock region,’ which is said to have required a minor surgery.

In his place, D’Arcy Short played the series opener, which Australia went on to lose by six wickets after being knocked over for 152 with the bat.

It would be seen as unlikely that McDermott will play the second match of the series, given Marsh may be back and Short was picked in the squad before him.

The Queensland-born batsman, who also can carry the gloves, is currently playing for Tasmania, however, he has been left out of the Sheffield Shield side during the first couple of matches this season.

McDermott has made a name for himself in the shorter forms of the game though, with some excellent play for the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League and Tasmania in one-day cricket. He currently has an average of 50 in List A cricket with two centuries in 14 matches to his name.

When was the last time Maxwell rescued the team?

How many more run outs do we need? It is our top order who failed. They need to find a way to get singles. Maxwell should bat in the top 4 and not be asked to always rescue the team.

Isn't it funny that Don Freo only comes crawling out of that Western Australian cave when the golden Marsh bros make a few cheap Shield runs, but he was oddly absent during the entire South Africa and Pakistan test series......

Yea forgot about Marsh was thinking of his replacement through injury. I'm not 100 % on Head but would prefer him in the middle order. Im kind of sick of Maxwell in the ODI side just leave him for the T20 team. Mcdermott has been keeping overseas in T20 and offers alot more fire power although Carey does seem solid in the middle agaisnt spin a real concerining area for us. Maybe a lineup like this? Khawaja Finch S.Marsh Head/Ferguson/Cooper Carey (wk) Mcdermott Stoinis Cummins NCN Starc Zampa/Lyon

McDermott hasn't kept for Tassie for two years, while Carey has been the least of our concerns in the national side. And where are S Marsh and Head, two of our better-performed ODI batsmen in the last 12 months?

It will be surprising if Australia win one of their next 5 short format games - the 2 remaining ODI against SA and the 3 T20 against India.

With a fully fit team Australia should ultimately drastically change its lineup and go with something like this Khawaja Finch Lynn Ferguson Cooper Mcdermott (wk) Stoinis Cummins NCN Starc Zampa/Lyon Or got with 2 spin options Khawaja Finch Lynn Cooper/Ferguson McDermott (wk) Stoinis M.Marsh Agar Cummins/NCN Starc Zampa/Lyon

Thank goodness he played well in the JLT. I'm not 100% sure on his glovework, but if he could be the sole WK that would do wonders for the batting lineup.
