Maxwell to chase Ashes spot by turning back on IPL

By News / Wire

Australia duo Glenn Maxwell and Joe Burns have signed for Lancashire as overseas players for the 2019 County Championship season.

Lancashire have signed Australians Joe Burns and Glenn Maxwell as overseas players for the 2019 season.

Queensland opener Burns will be available for 10 of the team’s County Championship Division Two fixtures.

All-rounder Maxwell can feature in all three formats, having opted out of the IPL, and is expected to play a maximum of five championship games with a view to reclaiming a spot in the Test side for the Ashes.

Burns, who has also enjoyed spells with Leicestershire and Middlesex, told Lancashire’s website: “Lancashire is a huge county with a fine history in the game and I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to play for the Red Rose next year.

“I’m determined to put in some match-winning contributions for the side and help Lancashire push for promotion at the first time of asking.”

Maxwell, who has played seven Tests, 87 ODIs and 57 Twenty20s for Australia, added: “Coming over to England early next year will also help me acclimatise to conditions ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup, which I am incredibly excited about.

“I still have aspirations to play Test cricket for Australia so I felt it was important that I play some first-class cricket whilst I’m over in England.

“There are some very talented young players in the Lancashire squad and I can’t wait to join up with the lads in April and contribute towards a successful season in all competitions.”

I know you don't like Warner, but hate to break it to you, he isn't banned from tests 4 life and barring some players in the current squad suddenly going out and scoring hundred after hundred over the remainder of this series, will almost certainly be straight back in the team for the World Cup and the Ashes.

Hie was dumped by his franchise because they knew he was only going to be available for part of the tournament. And as Simoc says, he's ranked as the number 1 T20 allrounder in the world.

Must have been talking about Joe Mennie. He can bat, don't you know?

Maxwell is in the top couple of players in the world in one day and T20, he has got a top strike rate, is a handy fifth bowler in limited formats and his one of the best fielders in the world. However they prefer losing matches rather than having him bowl which is weird, and that reduces his contribution in both formats, which means they even leave him out of the one day side. So he is ill advised to think that they will select him in test cricket they are just giving him excuses to fob him off .I think playing in the IPL makes players better players of spin certainly, remember there are not many Australian cricketers that get to play in the IPL year in year out. As far as money , remember country cricket is the second best pay cheque though you have to play for a longer period to get that money.

He is the number 1 all rounder for a reason. Part of Maxwell bad ipl was due to gambhir struggling and chewing up deliveries and leaving it to Maxwell to rescue the team. He should have batted much higher.

No chance. Smith comes back into the side, Maxwell will never be picked while Smith is there. The way Smith bucketed Maxwell publicly about his commitment just because he's not an OCD seven hour net sessioner like Smith told everyone everything they needed to know - and judging from comments above I wasn't alone in noticing. Hopefully Maxwell gives a giant raspberry to Australian cricket in the future and makes a mountain of money playing T20's around the globe. He deserves to.

Well, he’s doing himself out of millions because they’re still not going to pick him.

Maxwell averaged 14 across 12 games in the IPL and was dumped by his franchise. His value has plummeted so sitting out the auction is hardly a surprise. Be worse to go unwanted and of course Australian players are leaving early due to a retarded ruling by our CA board. A ruling that will not help Australia at the ODI World Cup. Hopefully Maxwell will get among the big scores and re-establish his career.

Maxwell has the ability to score quickly when needed like last game vic vs wa they needed quick runs to declare. Victoria were stupid not to open with Maxwell and Maddinson as selfish dean took his time as did pukovski and in the end Victoria didn’t have the time to get 10 wickets.

“Glenn just hasn’t scored enough IPL runs in our mind to be considered for the test squad, what he really needs to do is go back to the IPL and make some big scores. To your second question, I am unaware of anyone in the Australian set up called Joe.”

I really like the idea of Maxwell batting middle order in the Test team, because I think he has the game smarts to really cater his batting for different situations. This has been the case for a while now. But I think that his chances in the Test arena are slim and I also believe that Australia is going towards 2-3 specialised teams. I reckon his stint in England is more about getting quality English experience under his belt ahead of the World Cup. He really wants to contribute with the bat during that tournament.

Maxwell and Burns are 2 players who have been shafted by the selectors. Hope they both tear it up.
