Super Rugby Round 10 teams: Maddocks returns for Rebels

By The Roar / Editor

Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson has opted to move Kurtley Beale into the fullback position vacated by exiled Wallaby Israel Folau.

The much-anticipated clash between the Waratahs and Rebels – the top two sides in the Australian conference – will also see skipper Michael Hooper play his 100th game for the club.

Jed Holloway has also recovered from his rib injury and slots back into the XV in the second row.

Melbourne will be bolstered by the return of Jack Maddocks – one of four inclusions – although skipper Angus Cottrell has been ruled out with injury.

Queensland have made three changes to their XV ahead of their important clash with the Sharks.

Sefa Naivalu returns on the wing after being rested against the Bulls, while Harry Hoopert and Angus Scott-Young have been promoted off the bench to the No.1 and No.6 spots, respectively.

Wells is a smart no 8 with a high work rate and good ball skills. He is underrated, perhaps because he is not particularly big. But he has some class about him.

the more times they fail to show it the more it might have just been the wet and opposition having an off night. Not too many Tahs in the Wallabies if I was a selector and I’m a supporter! Hopefully Johnson and O’Connor drive some change in selections.

Was it really defensive grit against the Crusaders, or perhaps the Crusaders just had a shocker. That's the problem with the Waratahs and Australian rugby in general: one scrappy average win over a consistently dominant team and suddenly the hype skyrockets. The Tahs have always been defensively weak and will always struggle against a high tempo team. I don't see the Tahs changing this. They relied too heavily on Folau, who was renowned for being disinterested most of the time the Tahs were losing, not to mention a very lazy defender. The entire Tahs attitude needs to change. The problem lies with the usual core players of automatic selection in the Wallabies, no matter how poorly they play. The match ups are endlessly across the park and Cheika won't be happy with a Rebels win threatening his favourites. Fascinating match up indeed, but will the result really impact Wallabies selection? Nope

Yeah, think the Rebels are favourites. Tahs are going to have to find that defensive grit they showed against the Crusaders. Stormers put on a master class on how to take on this Rebel team last week, Rebels have strengthened since then - have the Tahs learned the lessons and can they implement them? Think this could be a fascinating match up.

Big impact needed by both benches, however the Rebels have the edge. I'm predicting 27-17 Rebels. Hodge to boot a 50+ metre penalty to turn the screws mid second half

So is Luke Jones. I think Gibson is OK with that contest not happening.

i guess with dmac out he has a shot but is still in competition with solomano, sorry spelling? and stevenson for the 15 jersey over the season. seems a pretty solid option from what i've seen.

It's still where I'd prefer to see him play but sadly the Tahs don't have the depth at lock to allow him to shift.

Agree jeznez. I am hoping that he makes #8 for the Wallabies in the RWC. Where is he playing the team is not announced yet?

The BIG question this week is will the Kiwi's do it again? Can they take an Aus rugby discard, Jack Debreczeni, and turn him into a big winner!!! I would bet they will, their coaches and structures make us look like the bunch of amateurs we are ATM. Maybe not this game but I am betting in a few games many will be scratching their heads. I also noted a couple of posters when he went to NZ saying he would never make it..Let's see who's right and who's wrong...

Pronunciation of the No. 1 player for the Lions is a major trap for a dyslexic commentator, hastily reading the team sheets.

Kurtley versus Hodge for the 15 jumper. I wonder will the Tahs be able to pay the costs that will be coming to Israel.

Great to see Clark and Newsome on the wings ahead of Rona, assume Rona will come on for AAC early 2nd half. Or maybe if Beale has a shocker at 15 on the wing for Newsome to move back to fullback.

Tahs are still decent and will look to replicate the game against the Reds: bog it down to their level, whereas the Rebels will want to play fast and with plenty of high ball to Beale. This could prove another banana skin of a game for the Rebels.

That’s about as well as Gibson can structure the team. Great to see Holloway back. Go Tahs!
