Kodi Nikorima pulled from Brisbane NRL team with Tom Dearden to debut

By News / Wire

Brisbane’s Kodi Nikorima won’t play in Thursday’s NRL grudge match against South Sydney, with coach Anthony Seibold giving the long-time Broncos halfback a chance to “ponder his future”.

Teenager Tom Dearden will debut in place of Nikorima, who has been linked to an immediate move to the Warriors.

“He also has some decisions to ponder around his future, decisions that are not easy to sift through, and that may affect his family,” Seibold said.

“It will give Kodi the time and space to think through his decision.”

It is another subplot in what will be Seibold and Wayne Bennett’s first game against their former clubs since their controversial coaching swap last December.

Seibold said Nikorima had also been struggling with a calf injury and that a third game in 11 games may’ve been too much to handle.

The Warriors have lost Blake Green to a groin injury while Shaun Johnson’s sudden off-season departure has left them short of experience in the halves.

Nikorima, the New Zealand Test No.7, has had his moments but struggled to consistently click alongside five-eighth Anthony Milford since the pair began their partnership last season.

No mate. Souths and Brisbane decided that they wanted to swap coaches. Bennett didn’t want to go, so The Broncos sacked him. Souths, Brisbane and Seibold all mutually agreed for Seibold to start a year early at Brisbane. Seibold was never in breach or f his contract with Souths. It was terminated by mutual consent. There were literally dozens of articles written about it.

Nah. You’re still off the pace. It has more to do with the current structure of the Broncos spine, the contractual value of the other players within it and salary cap management. Currently the Broncos have: 1. an out of form Hooker on about $600k per year (I think). 2. An out of form 5/8 on $1 million. 3. A mediocre 7 on $250k. 4. A fullback in terrible form on about $750k. None of those players are great game managers with a long range kicking game. One of them needs to get subbed out for an organiser. Out of those 4 players, Nikorima is the only one that the Broncos could pass off to another club without having to pay a hell of a lot of money. Boyd and Milford both have another 2 years to go on their contracts and no team would pay them the kind of money they are currently getting. Similar situation, but not as bad with McCullough. If any of the other 3 were being paid as little as Nikorima is, or if any other team was willing to buy out their contracts, it wouldn’t be Nikorima leaving.

I have no doubt Jimmy might prefer Bennett's style. Siebold does seem to focus on a lot of psychology gimmicks which I have no doubt would drive many players up the wall. Benny clearly understands one thing. You have to get to know your players and find out how they tick before you try and fire them up.

Yes, that's in doubt I know, as I was saying what I heard today on the radio, anyway, the Bunnies will sort the centres out and we will see whos available that is worth paying big money for?

Emcie, you forgot the best one for ‘Hunt the accomplished halfback” the knock on’ that is “reserve grade standard” not “accomplished halfback” that gifted the Cows the GF in X-Time and when JT won the GF!

And yet he's allowed to walk, mid contract, from a team with a 2-5 record. To be replaced by a kid making his debut whom the club value higher. That says more than anyone on this forum has about Nikorima

Nikorima on $600K!!! Considering that's what Kayln Ponga gets a season with the Knights either the Warriors or Ponga have been ripped off! I'm not overly pleased with Roberts coming to Souths IF it does eventuate. Beyond injury concerns and his off-field behavioural issues a few years back is the fact that he played Souths for fools the last time around and turned down their $500K offer at the 11th hour to accept $300K from the Broncos. He tweeted "sstid" in response to fans queries about who he was signing with just before the announcement he had signed with the Broncos. Poor form. IF Roberts does come to the Rabbitohs I would play him on the wing and Campbell Graham at centre. Graham's natural position is centre and size and strength could see him play a similar role to Brad Takairangi who created countless opportunities for Semi Radradra. Imagine Roberts in space on a regular basis? Souths should also flick Gagai and bring Josh Addo-Carr back to Redfern where he grew up and played for Moore Park and La Perouse. The highest priority however should be for Souths to do an Angus Crichton on the Roosters and steal Latrell Mitchell from them.

PS, I was being facetious there just for a laugh, yes I know! Nico is going to the Warriors (its 100% being confirmed) he will be on 600k and will be playing with them in 3 weeks, that is the news as is the news that, Jimmy Jet will be with the Bunnies sometime this year but, there is some opposition (within the Bunnies) that Jimmy has too much baggage and a permanent Achilles tendon injury? But he wants to come to the Bunnies because of Bennett who he always got on with and got the best out of him!

‘Slobba’ don’t make me laugh, its got nothing to do with the Broncs (I’ve got nothing against them!) and wherever Seibold is or what he does, I couldn’t give a toss! The Bunnies were under coached by Madge (hence the example and his form this year at the Tigers) and that was for at least the last 2 years 2015-17, the Bunnies had the players and Seibold ‘was lucky’ with the Bunnies, as his record does not show ‘this year’ with the Broncs! Don’t try and make Seibold as some sort of a ‘magician’ as the Bunnies irrespective of Seibold, were always great and always had the players to make the top 4 and win the comp! Nikorima was one of the nucleus players of the Broncs and the Broncos stuffed up and he’s had enough of the Bronco robbing him, with 250k while he’s going to get 600k at the Warriors. Nikorima was the best part of the Broncos spasmodic and mystical wins, as you can also add the ‘rub of the green’ and ‘refs’ assistances lol which is part of the course with the Broncs, especially up there at Lang/Suncorp, over the years, where all the rules just ‘go out the window’! Let’s see if Seibold can get the Broncs to 3rd place in 2019? As he’s only got 18 rounds to go and get 16 wins? Let’s see if Seibold can get the Broncos to score 582 points with 437 points against, with 24 games played, 16 wins and 8 losses? As it stand now and after round 6 they are, 2 from 4, 136 for, 147 against. Let’s see how magical Seibold is??? That is my point, as the Broncs have had plenty of the best of everything and that is especially the best players from Qld! (sorry the paragraphs don’t seem to come out in my post?)

Thanks for the info Nat. Looking forward to it. But I still like to see what O’Sullivan can do. Who knows what the season has in store. Uncharted ground for the broncos.

I've watched a bit of Q Cup this year and taking a special note of the halves. I wrote a few weeks back the problem the Broncos have/had, none of the young halves were dominating ISP level, where Kodi could/would. Dearden only played a handful of Q Cup games (MoM in the 1st) and 3 trails (one included Dargan & O'Sullivan and he still shone) for the Broncos and he's a special talent for an 18yo. He can do good things at pace. I won't go throwing rose petals at his feet but I'm excited to see what the young fella brings.

Also looking forward to seeing what he’s got. Gotta be honest I was surprised to see him named over OSullivan. But I have barely seen any QCup this year to base that on. How’s he been for the devils? Dearden’s highlights for Wynnum look promising. But the broncos aren’t really looking for highlights are they? We need someone who is going to steer the ship.

Yep, I actually didn't see any of the trials this year and he has some big wraps on him. To his credit he must have worked hard to get the opportunity. Let's hope he takes it will both hands. You know, that's one of the things I love from rugby league. New stars in the making always keep coming though. People were up in arms when Andrew Johns near the end of his career, plyed the "I'm going to Union" trade to get a last big pay cheque, Sonny Bill Kept us on a string having us beg him to come back to save him. But we've had a bunch of new superstars coming through every year. League is in good shape and I hope this young Bronco makes his mark.

No, just 5 players. Happy to let you keep the rest. OR, just like old man Bennett, I'm just playing mind games and trying to rattle the Broncos cage ahead of tomorrow nights game? ;-) Truth is Latrell Mitchell and Corey Oates are the two players I am most intetested in seeing come to Souths. The Rabbitohs lost a HUGE star in Greg Inglis who was not at his best because of injury and they need to replace him ASAP but only with quality. That's only fair and I would argue that for any club. Like many teams this year that won big one week and lost the next I can't see the Broncos going back to back two weeks in a row. Especially against a team that won't lie down and go belly up like the Sharks did. The fact that it is away from Suncorp stadium also works against the Broncos and in Souths favour. I'm not expecting a walk in the park even though I am tipping Souths by 10+

I’m really looking forward to seeing Tom Dearden debut in first grade. Another young 18 year old and taking on one of the toughest positions on the park. There’s a really big lack of quality young halves and I think some who had big wraps haven’t quite reached their anticipated potential – Ash Taylor I think even taking into account injury at age 24 hasn’t improved to become an elite half. Even Cleary is struggling this year. These two are the brightest young halves to come along recently. I think Siebold has made a decision and he thinks Nikorima isn’t the one to take the Broncos to the next level long term and maybe he can mould Tom Dearden into the next great half. Only time will tell.

Hunt on $1.1 million or Nikorima on $0.25 million? Probably a 50/50 call. But Nikorima was never been the long term halfback. He has only ever been a stop gap until they get a top tier half.
