Get Israel Folau and Alan Joyce across the table

By David Lord / Expert

Wallaby Israel Folau is an acknowledged devout Christian, no argument, but his Instagram posting of drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists and idolators repent, or Hell awaits you, has ripped rugby apart.

And if Rugby Australia gets its way, Folau’s $4 million contract will be terminated and heading for the shredding machine.

But if the governing body doesn’t get its way, it will be heading for the financial toilet.

Let’s face it, Rugby Australia chairman Cameron Clyne, and CEO Raelene Castle, aren’t blessed with vision, but that can be corrected in one swoop but getting Folau, and Qantas boss Alan Joyce, across the table.

They’ve got nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

Fact – the drunks, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists, and idolators of this world couldn’t give a rats about going to Hell, not one has come forward complaining about Folau’s controversial post.

Not one, nor will they.

It’s the homophobic post that has caused the international mayhem.

But Folau, with Joyce, could not only defuse the mayhem, but save Rugby Australia becoming insolvent.

And rugby as a sport deserves nothing less.

The first thing Folau has to do is explain to Joyce why he posted that Instagram.

I’m one of countless thousands who can’t come to grips with what Folau hoped to achieve. Being a devout Christian doesn’t give him the right to be so politically incorrect in the modern world.

It’s not freedom of speech, it’s purely divisive.

Right now there can’t, nor won’t, be any winners.

But if Folau, and Joyce, could emerge from a face-to-face to front a massive media conference shaking hands, everyone would be a winner.

It would require Folau to zip it forever on his controversial crusade, and concentrate solely on what he does best, and that’s to play world class entertaining rugby.

And Joyce to continue to fork out $4 million a year as the Wallabies major sponsor, which is an ideal fit.

Don’t try to tell me it can’t be done when such an epic meeting hasn’t even been suggested, nor probably not given a thought.

Communication in troubled times has become a lost art world wide.

Now is the perfect time to bring it back.

Ruckin Oaf, Thanks for that advice - the webpage for relevant code of conduct is below. There is no date on it - something of a colossal and major oversight, but we can assume the 24 pages were not drawn up in the last month. There is an introduction by Raelene Castle so its written between her appointment and now. https://www.rugbyau.com/about/codes-and-policies/integrity/code-of-conduct You have to click on the link. It seems to me the relevant parts are page 6, 1.3 , 1.6 and 1.8. Frankly, its debatable whether Folau did breach it. If it was a simple matter then the hearing would not have taken as long as it did and would have been over in a day. What he posted was not bullying and harrassment. it's the bit about maing his employer look bad that is the most likely problem area. I don't know why Raelene Castle is now talking about a social media clause now because 1.7 is exactly that. Michael

no guarantee they will. They sponsor a lot of other sporting sides. It would also demonstrate to Joyce that RA can get sponsorship from the same mob Qantas is aligned with

Hey Skeek, I can't really see how your voting, sporting or gastronomic preferences in any way shape or form could possibly equate with your sexuality. I voted Liberal last federal election, probably won't this one, might do next one. Don't watch much league but will always tune in for origin, and I'm happy with either BBQ or tomato sauce thanks. My sexual preferences however, well they've been the same since puberty and will remain so until the day I die I reckon. We can’t stop every hurtful word or phrase being uttered.... And ? We can't stop every crime either, would that be a good reason to disband the police force ? Doctors can't save every life - maybe we should stop funding hospitals. There might be some good arguments out there to support homophobia and those who make homophobic comments - but so far I'm yet to see em and this latest effort sure ain't it.

And if you listen to any number of people, you're wrong if you vote coalition, or like rugby league, or don't have sauce on your egg & bacon roll, or whatever. We should stop confusing hurtful comments considered by some, with hate speech. If you want to stop hurtful comments, then stop speech fullstop. Some people are uber-sensitive, about anything, & perhaps it says more about them than anything that is actually said. We can't stop every hurtful word or phrase being uttered, unless we become a totalitarian society, & are forced to to toe the party line. Is that what people want, a totalitarian state?

what homophobia? I dunno maybe the one that says gays are headed to hell gay mafia are running the agenda Yeah there are plenty of gay folk who will admit to their agenda - like this fella The secret gay agenda is to one day be able to say the word “husband” on the train, at the pub, in front of the tradie or in my regional Queensland home town without fear of being bashed or verbally abused. https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/gay-marriage/whats-really-changed-a-year-on-from-the-samesex-marriage-yes-vote-a-lot-but-also-not-much/news-story/897a0053e57bb3f3fb65e844c7d1b721

Fionn, I think both Qantas (and capital) lost out as this divisive episode pulled rugby and its associated brands such as the Qantas Wallabies through he mud. A distracted and divisive Qantas Wallaby team will play at he 2019 RWC with the smell of the death of IF's career around their neck. Everyone lost in this sorry saga.

The Israel Folau saga illustrates how ineffective it is to punish someone for deeply held religious believes. No Code of Conduct, contract, jail term or even crucifixion will prevent someone from acting on their believes if they think the reward in the afterlife outweighs the pain in the current. To blame IF I think is simplistic and ignore the role others played to crate this lose-lose situation. There was a better way to deal with this by stimulating debate to create mutual understanding and tolerance for different opinions and believes. Some of these believes my be valid or invalid but I still think the best course of action is to discuss the merits of each of them so that society can progress and make up their minds. Neither Folau, Rugby Australia, Qantas and other major sponsors nor the media (that did their best to sensationalise and confuse) promoted a respectful debate so we have not learned much from this sorry episode. Not even Alan Joyce should gain any satisfaction from the role he played in (what is likely to be) the termination of Israel Folau's rugby career during a RWC year. This was just failure of leadership on so many levels.

The Roar seems to have shutdown the Folau discussion. Since last article, there’s been serious doubts raised about Folau’s contract, that Castle is under the pump for botching it. Also, Folau has deleted all images of him in Tah’s/WB’s uniform. Seems strange as Roar was running, a few articles a day up until recently. Labour did target the PM, and he simply replied that he’s Running for PM, not to be the Pope

For the reason outlined in the comment you responded to. Those are actions you choose to do. Being a homosexual is not something you choose.

You're right I reckon. It's more about homophobes blaming anyone other than Israel Folau for his hate speech.
